The muscadine is native to the Southeastern U.S. and thrives in our hot and humid growing conditions. The vines can easily be grown organically since they require little or no spraying. They can safely be grown from the coastal side of New York south to Florida, and west to Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. They also can be grown in parts of New Mexico, Arizona, and the coastal sides of California, Oregon, and Washington state. If you select a female variety you must have a self-fertile variety within 50 feet of any female variety. Muscadines average between 50-60 lbs per female plant and 60-80 lbs per self-fertile plant. A black self-fertile plant can pollinate a bronze female and vice/versa. Muscadines are one of nature’s richest sources of polyphenolic antioxidants, the potential health benefits include preliminary evidence for effects against cancer mechanisms, so not only are they fun to grow and eat they also are very healthy for you.
