TALKS INFORMATION BUENOS AIRES | AUGUST 22 | 2018 Art Basel Cities Talks Program in Buenos Aires The Art Basel Cities Talks Program facilitates exchanges and conversations about art, and the art world more generally, between members of the Argentine and international art communities, together with the wider public. With more than 30 events held in informal formats and unconventional locations, the Art Basel Cities Talks Program takes place throughout the year, coinciding with key cultural activations in Buenos Aires, as well as during the Art Basel Cities Week, September 6- 12, 2018. It engages with cultural institutions and leading art schools, universities and educational organizations. In August and September 2018, the Art Basel Cities Talks Program is structured around two formats: Artist Talks To complement 'Hopscotch (Rayuela)', the citywide exhibition curated by Cecilia Alemani, artists are invited to discuss their works on-site, on their own or in conversation with an Argentine or international art expert. These talks – hosted by András Szántó, Author and Cultural Strategy Consultant and Mariano López Seoane, Talks Program Coordinator, Art Basel Cities – will be open to the public. Places are limited and will be on a first come first served basis. Masterclasses Featuring invited art professionals, thought leaders and international artists, Masterclasses are designed for Buenos Aires’ art professionals as well as university students. The talks will be offered in two formats: a single speaker in a seminar-style setting, or multiple experts with larger audiences. DETAILED ARTIST TALKS PROGRAM Monday, August 27, 2018 7pm to 8.30pm | Art Basel Cities | Juliana Huxtable Juliana Huxtable, artist, writer, DJ, founder of Shock Value Interlocutors: Valentina Liernur, artist, professor at Universidad Torcuato di Tella; Mariano López Seoane, Talks Program Coordinator, Art Basel Cities Venue: Universidad Torcuato di Tella, 7350 Avenida Presidente Figueroa Alcorta, Belgrano, Buenos Aires Artist Juliana Huxtable will give a talk addressing cultural, social and political issues relevant to her work. Thursday, September 6, 2018 5pm to 5.45pm | Art Basel Cities | Leandro Katz Leandro Katz, artist Venue: Biblioteca Nacional, Agüero 2502, Recoleta, Buenos Aires In this talk, Leandro Katz will discuss his piece 'Lunar Alphabet', a work that explores the idea of a universal language. Katz will debate his piece in the context of his larger work and. 6.30pm to 7pm | Art Basel Cities | Artist Talk about Stan VanDerBeek Sara VanDerBeek, Chelsea Spengemann (The Estate of Stan VanDerBeek) Venue: Planetario Galileo Galilei, Avenida Sarmiento, Palermo, Buenos Aires Sara VanDerBeek and Chelsea Spengemann, in charge of The Estate of Stan VanDerBeek, will offer an introduction to the artist's work just before it's projection in the Planetarium. Friday, September 7, 2018 1pm to 2pm | Art Basel Cities | Guillermo Kuitca Guillermo Kuitca, artist Interlocutor: Pablo León de la Barra, Latin American Curator at Large, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum Presented by UBS and Art Basel Venue: Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires, 350 Avenida San Juan, San Telmo, Buenos Aires Guillermo Kuitca in conversation with Pablo León de la Barra reflecting on his work, the city as a theater and stage, and the development of the art scene in Buenos Aires. Saturday, September 8, 2018 4.15pm to 5pm | Art Basel Cities | Luciana Lamothe Luciana Lamothe, artist Venue: Plaza República Oriental del Uruguay, Recoleta, Buenos Aires Luciana Lamothe will discuss her work as well as her creative process while taking the audience through her installation in Plaza República Oriental del Uruguay. 5.30pm to 6.15pm | Art Basel Cities | Eduardo Basualdo Eduardo Basualdo, artist Venue: Asociación Argentina de Pesca, Avenida Lanchas, Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires Eduardo Basualdo will discuss with the audience his sculptural experiential installation at the pier of the Asociación Argentina de Pesca. Sunday, September 9, 2018 12pm to 12.45pm | Art Basel Cities | Gabriel Chaile Gabriel Chaile, artist Meeting point: Waterfront of La Boca, Av. Don Pedro de Mendoza between Av. Almte. Brown and Martín Rodríguez, Buenos Aires For ‘Hopscotch (Rayuela)’, artist Gabriel Chaile has created (Retrato de Diego Núñez) / Diego (Portrait of Diego Núñez) (2018), a sculptural installation that doubles as a clay oven in which locals can prepare their food. In this talk, which begins at the artwork site and ends at Fundacíon Proa, he will discuss the importance of community dialog to the function of his work. 3pm to 3.45pm | Art Basel Cities | Mariela Scafati Mariela Scafati, artist Venue: Museo de Calcos y Escultura Comparada Ernesto de la Cárcova, 1701 Avenida España, Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires Mariela Scafati will create an intervention in the Museo de Calcos y Escultura Comparada Ernesto de la Carcova between her art and works and artists from the past; walking the audience through her varied creative strategies and methods. 4pm to 4.45pm | Art Basel Cities | Santiago de Paoli Santiago de Paoli, artist Venue: Museo de Calcos y Escultura Comparada Ernesto de la Cárcova, 1701 Avenida España, Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires Santiago de Paoli will stage a conversation at the Museo de Calcos y Escultura Comparada Ernesto de la Carcova between his own art and works and artists from the past. He will address this connection to the past and the possibility of activating old sites for the present in a guided tour of his installation. 5.15pm to 5.45pm | Art Basel Cities | David Horvitz David Horvitz, artist Venue: Fundación PROA, 1929 Avenida Don Pedro de Mendoza, La Boca, Buenos Aires David Horvitz will initiate this talk at 4pm with a mass participatory action in homage to French artist Marcel Duchamp, in which 200 balloons will be released in the sky, each attached to a mile-long string. Following the performance, Horvitz will discuss his affinity for Duchamp and his inspirations for this work, titled Señalamiento del cielo (Signaling the Sky) (2018), conceived specifically for 'Hopscotch (Rayuela)’. Please note that the location for the talk differs from the gathering point for the artistic action, which is along the waterfront of La Boca, near Av. Don Pedro de Mendoza 2200. In La Boca, please stay on the main streets, stick to recommended routes and use licensed taxis to and from the neighborhood. After short introductions by each speakers, participants will be split in three groups for focused discussion. The groups will share their conclusions in a final discussion.
