On November 17,Variety reported that Chappelle's third Netflix stand-up special entitled Equanimity —the Sticks & Stones special Chappelle has produced exclusively for Netflix—will be released on Netflix on December 31, Film director Stan Lathan spoke of having two weeks to set up the shoot for The Bird Revelation ," with the directing adding that it was their intent "to be as intimate and inside the experience as possible", Sticks & Stones making references to The Age of Spin where Chappelle and he emptied the space to create a mini-stadium, complete with Sticks & Stones thrust that takes Chappelle, who tends to walk the stage for blocks, anyway, out into the house. He's performing for these people, not for these cameras. Instead of relying on typical audience cutaways, we included Dave in those shots whenever possible. On August 15,Sticks & Stones announced Chappelle's fifth comedy special in an announcement teaser on YouTube narrated by Morgan Freeman. The website's critics consensus reads, "Edgy, but empty, Sticks and Stones might not break any bones, but it won't elicit many laughs, either. Vanity Fair ' s Laura Bradley, in a negative review, criticized the "stale work from a comedian who was once known for truly boundary-pushing comedy", adding that "These jokes [ And what is that mark? The truth. Chappelle remains one of the most vital, and certainly among the most daring, of standups [ It's a symbiotic cycle with no Sticks & Stones in sight, and it's become the last thing a beloved provocateur should ever want to be: predictable. The special was not without its praise. Comedian Katherine Timpf remarked that Chappelle "intended his special to be a protest against cancel culture and oversensitivity". They may call themselves woke. They're barely breathing. Watkins of Salonin a positive review, felt that "dismissing Chappelle's work as simply or obstinately regressive is not unlike seeing the world through the same lens as" a Comedy Central network executive who, according to Chappelle, told him that he couldn't say a slur against gay people despite allowing him Sticks & Stones routinely use a slur against black people. He came back to make people laugh, and, once again, he has succeeded. The problem now with Dave Chappelle is he's a birdshot sniper in a buckshot society. It's a projection of relative moralitywhere those who are perceived as vulnerable must be protected at all costs from any ridicule, even the joking kind. Porter of The Good Men Projectrated the film 4 out of 5 stars, stating that, " Sticks and Stones might be Chappelle's tightest set, tempo wise. He jumps right in and moves along at a brisk and controlled pace. There isn't much fat and he ties up material quickly and effectively when he's ready to move along to other material. It's a sincere moment, leading to a sincere story from his childhood. Kellyand for his commentary on the LGBT community, including a stereotypical impression of a Chinese person which he performed during a joke about transgender people. Yet [ With all that's going on in the world, that's what he chooses to do? He isn't punching up or punching down. He's punching lines. That's his job and he's a master of his craft. At least not from Sticks & Stones interesting place, or at least not from beyond his own point of view. Maureen Callahan of The New York Postwho spoke highly of Chappelle's piece, observed that there is a conversation we're not yet having: "[ In a culture that is otherwise full of cheap provocations, from the White House to reality TV, Chappelle is a rarity: A true comic provocateur. Harris 2017 Abstract Adolescence has always been a cultural construction. The designation of a separate space apart from the presumed innocence of childhood and the myths of autonomy and responsibility that come to define adulthood is a surprisingly modern phenomenon. As such, adolescence bears the traces of the ideologies of race, gender, sexuality, and nation that attend so much of the period that calls itself “modernity.” My dissertation asks how writers and artists of color imagine themselves into the archive of coming of age narratives in post-1960s US literature and culture. In thinking about the importance of identity in the period following the advent of nominal civil rights, I offer the “long(er) civil rights movement” as a way of resisting the move to periodize the struggles through which difference has historically accrued meaning in the US nation- state. Each chapter centers around a “technology,” the academy, the body, the entertainment industry, and the internet, which is essential to the formation of adolescent identity in the post-war era, alongside a key term in the lexicon of American culture that accrues added meanings when filtered through the experience of difference.

    Social Texts, Social Audiences, Social Worlds: The Circulation of Popular Dance on YouTube Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Alexandra Harlig Graduate Program in Dance The Ohio State University 2019 Dissertation Committee Harmony Bench, Advisor Katherine Borland Karen Eliot Ryan Skinner Copyrighted by Alexandra Harlig 2019 2 Abstract Since its premiere, YouTube has rapidly emerged as the most important venue shaping popular dance practitioners and consumers, introducing paradigm shifts in the ways dances are learned, practiced, and shared. YouTube is a technological platform, an economic system, and a means of social affiliation and expression. In this dissertation, I contribute to ongoing debates on the social, political, and economic effects of technological change by focusing on the bodily and emotional labor performed and archived on the site in videos, comments sections, and advertisements. In particular I look at comments and fan video as social paratexts which shape dance reception and production through policing genre, citationality, and legitimacy; position studio dance class videos as an Internet screendance genre which entextualizes the pedagogical context through creative documentation; and analyze the use of dance in online advertisements to promote identity-based consumption. Taken together, these inquiries show that YouTube perpetuates and reshapes established modes and genres of production, distribution, and consumption. These phenomena require an analysis that accounts for their multivalence and the ways the texts circulating on YouTube subvert existing categories, binaries, and hierarchies. A cyclical exchange—between perpetuation and innovation, subculture and pop culture, amateur and professional, the subversive and the neoliberal—is what defines YouTube and the investigation I undertake in this dissertation.
