Porchside Songs 2021/22 PRESENTED BY PORCHSIDE SONGS LIVE & IN CONCERT, IN YOUR FRONT YARD! #PORCHSIDESONGSTO PRESENTING SEASON SPONSOR WELCOME TO PORCHSIDE SONGS One of the earliest decisions we made when the pandemic began was to curate mini-concerts and tour them to Toronto porches, backyards and neighbourhoods. After a frightening and devastating first wave, we experienced a healing each time another group experienced one of our PORCHSIDE SONGS. We watched families, friends and communities come back together after months of separation through live music. And we felt the electricity of giving groups of silenced artists a place to raise their voices again. We were able to share 80 concerts last summer throughout the city, bringing the gift of musical storytelling to over 1500 people. One year later, the return date for large-scale theatrical productions remains uncertain. But our early experiment with PORCHSIDE SONGS has become the guiding light for our work – artists can bring joy, inspiration and togetherness into people’s lives at this time if we meet people where they are and fill unexpected spaces with song. As the weather warms again, we are so excited to return music to the city with four new and sensational PORCHSIDE SONGS concerts, led by remarkable local artists. An Adelaide company doing “The Producers” – the Mel Brooks show that took Broadway by the scruff of its neck and was showered with Tonys? Could an Adelaide amateur company do this show? Attempting a production of this impeccable and brilliantly-credentialed show is remarkably ambitious. With two films and the wildly successful stage musical already seared into the public consciousness, it is impossible to create an original rendering. Add to this the limited budget of amateur theatre and the risks of presenting a spectacular dud are high. But this is no dud. “The Producers” is by no means perfect, but it is an enjoyable, tight and funny show. With disciplined performances, and comical and precise characterisations, Director Glenn Vallen must take the credit for the success of this production. “The Producers” is the story of the failed, bombastic Broadway producer Max Bialystock and his mousy accountant Leo Bloom. They plan to raise millions of dollars to produce a sure-fire flop, and then run off with the investors’ cash when the show closes. When they find “Springtime for Hitler”, a musical honouring the Fuhrer by a local Nazi, they think they’ve found their perfect turkey. “The Producers” depends primarily on Bialystock and Bloom. If they are ineffective, the show cannot succeed.

The show opens Sunday, November 3, at the Performing Arts Theater, 540 Ashbury Ave., El Cerrito. Its run consists of a 5:00 p.m. opening (11/3), two 2:00 p.m. matinees (11/9, 11/10), and three 7:30 p.m. performances (11/7, 11/8, 11/9). Rent is a rock opera loosely based on Puccini’s La Boheme, with music, lyrics, and book by Jonathan Larson. Set in Lower Manhattan’s East Village during the turmoil of the AIDS crisis, this moving story chronicles the lives of a group of struggling artists over a year’s time. Its major themes are community, friendship, and survival. In 1996, Rent received four Tony Awards, including Best Musical; six Drama Desk Awards; and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In 1997, it won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. Its Broadway run lasted 12 years. Co-Director Jennifer Boesing comments, “Rent is a love story and a bold, brazen manifesto for young artists who are trying not just to stay alive, but to stay connected to each other, when the mainstream culture seems to be ignoring signs of destruction all around them. Although the show today is a period piece about a very specific historical moment—well before the earliest memories of our young performing artists—they relate to it deeply just the same.

But a precious few of us seized upon this very strange and sequestered year as an opportunity for acquiring some new part of ourselves. Was it a surprise that Taylor Swift was one of those people? Her summer release Folklore was instantly contextualized as a quarantine project. Swift’s second album of 2020, Evermore, was similarly presented by the singer-songwriter herself as extra run-o! from an especially fruitful songwriting period. But anyone taking a wider view of her career could see albums like Folklore and Evermore on Swift’s musical horizon, even before Covid. During the press cycle for her 2019 e!ort Lover, Swift was already expressing disdain for the pop machine, likening it to The Hunger Games. That strain was also apparent on the album, in which some very good “small” Taylor Swift songs were larded with some very bad “big” would-be hits like “Me” and “I Forgot You Existed.” More than ever, the gap between the songs in which Swift’s heart seemed to be truly invested and the songs required for radio exposure and meme-friendly virality was incredibly stark. As our current reigning stadium rocker, Swift had made Born In The U.S.A.-style mega-smashes time and again. Now, it seemed, she yearned to make her Nebraska . But would pop’s chronic overachiever ever allow herself to make an album of strictly “small” and intimate songs?
