Flora of Australia Glossary — Ferns, Cycads, Conifers and Vascular plants A main glossary for the Flora of Australia was published in Volume 1 of both printed editions (1981 and 1999). Other volumes contain supplementary glossaries, with specific terms needed for particular families. This electronic glossary is a synthesis of all hard-copy Flora of Australia glossaries and supplementary glossaries published to date. The first Flora of Australia glossary was compiled by Alison McCusker. Mary D. Tindale compiled most of the fern definitions, and the conifer definitions were provided by Ken D. Hill. Russell L. Barrett combined all of these to create the glossary presented here, incorporating additional terms from the printed version of Volume 37. This electronic glossary contains terms used in all volumes, but with particular reference to the flowering plants (Volumes 2–50). This glossary will be updated as future volumes are published. It is the standard to be used by authors compiling future taxon treatments for the Flora of Australia. It also comprises the terms used in Species Plantarum — Flora of the World. Alternative terms For some preferred terms (in bold), alternative terms are also highlighted (in parentheses). For example, apiculum is the preferred term, and (=apiculus) is an alternative. Photo credit: RBG Kew SUMMARY Taxonomy: Kingdom: Plantae; Phylum: Polypodiophyta; Class: Polypodiopsida; Order: Marattiales; Family: Marattiaceae; Species: Ptisana purpurascens Nativeness: Endemic to Ascension Island Description: This imposing fern is the largest of Ascension Island’s endemic plant species, with dark green, twice pinnate fronds up to 1m in length. The stalks (or ‘petioles’) of the fronds are purplish in colour which gives the species its scientific name. It is only found on the damp, mist-drenched slopes around the summit of Green Mountain. IUCN Red List status: Critically Endangered Local trend: Probably stable Threats: The major threat to P. purpurascens is competition with invasive plant species; secondary threats include grazing by introduced mammals and climate change-induced habitat alteration. Distribution Global Ptisana purpurascens is endemic to Ascension Island. Local Ptisana purpurascens is known only from the central part of Ascension Island. It occurs on the uppermost slopes of Green Mountain at altitudes between 700 and 860m. The majority of the population is confined to a small area on steep, south and east facing slopes descending from the summit to the intersection of Elliott's Pass with Buddleia Ravine and Gooseberry Ravine. This area has retained the last vestiges of a fern-dominated community similar to that observed by early visitors to the island, although it is increasing invaded by non- native weeds. A few isolated patches are scattered in the highest parts of the south west slopes of Green Mountain, where it is very rare. -

This bird was banded and released as part of the bird survey. Marattia aganzhenensis sp. nov from the Lower Jurassic Daxigou Formation of Lanzhou, Gansu, China Abstract Marattia aganzhenensis sp. nov. from the Lower Jurassic Daxigou Formation of Lanzhou, Gansu, China, is the second species of Marattia known in fertile structure from China, in addition to Marattia asiatica. The new species demonstrates the variability of the genus through its distinct character states. This new species is distinguished by the absence of venuli recurrentes, the shorter synangia, exclusively monolete spores without surface ornamentation, and the low number of spores produced per sporangium. Lista de los helechos y licófitos de Cuba CARLOS SÁNCHEZ Jardín Botánico Nacional, Universidad de La Habana, Carretera del Rocío KM 3.5, Calabazar, 19230, La Habana, Cuba; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract. This paper presents an up-to-date list of the ferns and lycophytes of Cuba. The list contains 599 species in 131 genera and 37 families. In total, Cuba harbors 93 endemic species (17 lycophytes and 76 ferns) that represent a 15.5% of the total species of ferns and lycophytes. For each taxon the distribution in Cuba is given according to three phytogeographical subprovinces: Western Cuba, Central Cuba, and Eastern Cuba. The following new combina- tions are made: Amauropelta balbisii var. longipilosa, Amauropelta piedrensis var. heterotricha, Amauropelta scalpturoides var. glabriuscula, Christella hispidula var. inconstans, Cyathea × acunae, Didymoglossum caluffii, Didymoglossum micropubescens, Goniopteris alata var. subpinnata, Goniopteris sclerophylla var. latifolia, Pteris hexagona var. multifida. A new name, Goniopteris moranii, is given for Thelypteris guadalupensis. New records reported herein for Cuba are Megalastrum macrotheca, Polystichopsis argillicola, and Pteris propinqua. Bulbils Introduction The ferns and their allies share a lot of commom morphlogy with the other vascular plants and in many cases the same descriptive terminology is used. However, there are some fundamental and significant differences of structure unique to the pteridophytes and a specialized terminology has evolved to descdribe these. The most obvious difference between the pteridophytes and the remainder of the vascular plants is that the ferns and their allies do not produce large floral or reproductive structures that give rise to seeds which eventually develop into the next generation of plants. Pteridophytes reproduce and disperse by means of microscopic spores, the structure and development of which is every bit as intricate and amazing as the flowers of the higher plants. This outline covers the easily recognised features of the ferns and their alies and mentions many of the technical terms used to describe them. -

Current projects involving the development of the Seychelles National Herbarium and study of key biodiversity areas have resulted in extensive new explorations on the granitic islands. Historical literature, newly collected specimens and older collections have been revised for the fern family Marattiaceae as a prelude for a fern checklist, resulting in the rediscovery of Ptisana a century after it was last reported (as Marattia). Two species of Angiopteris are recognised in the Seychelles, one of them new to science. In total, three species are recorded from the granitic Seychelles islands, Mahé and Silhouette, and none from the coral islands, which are too dry to harbour Marattiaceae. -

This paper deals with a revised taxonomy of seven neotropical species of the genus Marattia (M. alata, M. cicutifolia, M. excavata, M. interposita, M. laevis, M. laxa y M. weinmanniifolia), based on morphological characters of the sporophyte, both vegetative and reproductive. A new and detailed description of the species is provided, along with synonymy, comments on habitat, geographical distribution and a complete list of the studied specimens.
