My Christmas List Checking It Twice - Week 1 Discussion Guide This season we are looking at our own Christmas list, examining our list and priorities that we have determined make a good life. But is a full life really found in checking things off of our list? • Did you make a Christmas list when you were a child? Where did you find the inspiration? (Sears catalog, Toys-R-Us catalog, TV, older siblings, friends) Luke 1:26-29 God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. Luke 1:30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.” • Why is it important for Mary to know “the Lord is with” her? • How do you think this is related to her status as “favored one?” Luke 1:31-33 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end. Luke 1:34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” Luke 1:35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. • What in these preceding verses seem important for your own faith? (ex: that the gospel names Mary, that Mary is a virgin, that the angel Gabriel communicates with her directly, that Jesus has a human mother, etc.) Luke 1:38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her. • Talk about Mary’s response. How do you think such a young, innocent woman could have had such a mature response? Christmas is an announcement. GOD IS HERE! • Have you ever thought of Christmas in this way? • How does it change your view of Christmas? Scott challenges us to look at a new set of priorities – first / last, service, humility, sacrifice, etc. – and that the only appropriate response to Christmas is not just giving gifts or having joy, but a willingness to surrender. To be flexible. • How flexible am I willing to be with the things that I hold most dear? PRAY FOR YOURSELF & YOUR GROUP Pray for God to show you how to be flexible, where to surrender, and pray to find joy in that surrender. .
