A WORD FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

NBA/ABA Legend James Jones is partnering with Nevada Homes for Youth as well as local community- focused organizations, corporate entities, academic institutions, governmental agencies, and community leaders, and individuals to host the James Jones Books and Camp. This one-week sports and education experience focuses on academic enrichment in math and science, personal development, financial literacy, community development, and team building skills. The camp will serve children ages 9 – 11 and youth ages 12 – 15.

Outside of the celebrities and community leaders teaching the curriculum, the camp will feature a number of uniquely effective alternative education curriculums:

! The Hands-On Science Camp curriculum (featured in this camp) offers exciting activities covering physics, chemistry, biology, space and earth science. This program is sure to increase the academic proficiency of students in math and science.

! The math curriculum engages students in math activities through an innovative approach that results in a significant and measurable increase in their academic proficiency.

! The Taking Financial Control curriculum teaches the basics of personal finance to young people while they are developing habits and attitudes about money that will influence them for the rest of their lives. It is based on the philosophy that learning about money is as important as earning it—and that effective money management results from a disciplined behavior, which is most easily mastered if learned early in life.

! The Academic All Stars Life and Social Skills Program emphasizes etiquette, grammar, situation appropriate attire, social formalities, appreciation of diversity, self-confidence, character-building, anger management, conflict resolution, and general life and social skills necessary to assimilate and succeed in any society. Included in the program is a powerful diversity component designed to promote understanding and respect among all races, religions and cultures through a unique and engaging training program. The program seeks to help youth value diversity in their personal lives, such that these values become prominent in their community. Building A Champion brings this curriculum to life in a uniquely interesting and highly effective manner.

The trend of accepting poor performance in math and science is detrimental to the development of our communities and further increases the incidence of adverse public health events that are negatively associated with our communities. Moreover, the practice of allowing children and youth to display inappropriate behaviors and maintain unhealthy attitudes further tears at and deteriorates the fabric of the community. Consequently, we are introducing a series of programs and events, commencing with the James Jones Books and Basketball Camp, to remedy the situation.

We are requesting your support in helping us accomplish this mission.

TOGETHER, WE CAN AND WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!

James Jones Books and Basketball Camp YEAR-ROUND PROGRAM

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT WAS NEVER THIS MUCH FUN!!! The Year-Round Program is an interactive after school, weekend, and summer program that uniquely integrates physical activity with innovative personal development and alternative education. Every element of the program is designed to engage youth, create a thirst for knowledge, and develop their life and social skills. The year-round component provides a platform that allows those individuals that have not been identified as first level stars and those who desire to participate in recreational organized sports as opposed to highly competitive programs to participate in skills development leagues. Some year-round participants are late developers that will later become top-flight athletes. All participants enjoy the benefits of building self-esteem, developing social skills, becoming physically fit, developing critical thinking skills, meeting new and interesting people, and being exposed to exciting, novel opportunities. Washington Bullets Star James “Jimmy” Jones James “Jimmy” Jones, a 6'4'' guard from Grambling State, played 7 years in the ABA followed by three seasons with the Washington Bullets of the NBA. Jones was one of the ABA’s first real prizes from the college ranks being drafted as the No. 2 choice of the NBA Baltimore Bullets behind Earl “the Pearl” Monroe, but electing instead to become the first player drafted and signed by the .

Jones signed with New Orleans as opposed to the Baltimore Bullets because he figured the Bullets top pick, , would get more playing opportunities. . . . "I wanted to build the team around big, high-scoring guards," Bucs/Pros coach McCarthy comments," So I made it clear to Jimmy that he was going to be the man to run our offense." . . . Bullets Coach Gene Shue seemed higher on Jones in later years than he was on Monroe. “I tried to get him to reconsider and switch leagues” . . . Jones did switch teams after the 1970-71 season, finding a contract loophole with the mismanaged Memphis team, and signed a multi-year contract with the .

James Jones was a great one-on-one player, had excellent speed and quickness, was a fine shooter, and remains one of the greatest men that ever played professional basketball.

Jones finished his career as one of the ABA's 30 all time best and remains among all-time ABA leaders in nearly every category.

James Jones Books and Basketball Camp OUR STORY

Academic All-Stars Program

The Academic All Stars Youth Development Program was birth as a result of the combination of two independently successful youth programs: Books and Basketball Camps; and Legacy 2000. Both holistic programs were designed to assist youth in becoming: 1) academically proficient; 2) more involved in the community; 3) self-enlightened; 4) respectful of others; 5) individuals of character; 6) mentally & physically fit; and 7) self-sufficient.

In 2004, the programs were merged and the resulting program, entitled the Academic All Stars Youth Development Program, was so named to reflect our vision – that every participant will embody the integrity, commitment, compassion, character, trustworthiness, loyalty, courtesy, respect, and goodwill that James Jones maintains for himself and mankind.

Given our vision, our mission is to ensure that every youth is given the maximum opportunity to succeed in life. Our goal, therefore, is to remove the barriers that prevent access or exposure to opportunity and simultaneously equip youth with the skill sets, develop the character traits, and give them the tools to identify and take advantage of the opportunities that are afforded them.

We intend to attain our goals by achieving the following objectives within our voluntary program: 1. Identify the participant’s areas of interest. What motivates? What excites? Likes? Dislikes? 2. Design and deliver the five program elements through these interests; thereby creating a thirst for knowledge and a desire to not only participate, but to excel. 3. Help youth to practice their new skill sets in regular school, at home, and in the community. 4. Facilitate the development of partnerships that maximize our ability to accomplish the first three objectives and, as a result, stimulate and strengthen our communities. Since 1983, our program design has helped more than 5,000 non-traditional students (high school dropouts, behavioral problems, underperforming youth, probation-assigned youth, pregnant teens, etc.) finish high school and/or attend college. More importantly, our participants were much better prepared for success in life as a result of our program.

THE FORGIVEN

Once there was a girl who was born into a very bad life. She wasn’t born into a loving family like one would like. Her father was always selling drugs or in prison. Her mother was also doing drugs and didn’t care about anything or anyone. Her brothers and sisters had bad friends that were always looking for a way to get in trouble. The girl was raised by her brothers and sisters, but mostly she was raised on her own. As time passed her family got worst. They were in so many problems the social workers threatened to take their kids from them. Although the girl’s parents didn’t care all that much, the girl could see [that] her mom wanted to come out and be a better mother to her kids, but something held her back. Her father was still selling drugs. One day the girl asked her father, “daddy why do you do bad things?” Her father looked at the girl and said, “there is no wrong way of making money if the money is right.” The girl never understood why he thought that way. Once when the girl was walking home from school, she saw her sister arguing with a boy no more than sixteen years old. She was telling him she was pregnant and needed money for an abortion. The girl knew she never wanted to do anything stupid like that. She wanted to finish school and move onto college to become someone in life. She didn’t want to be in a gang or get pregnant at a young age. There was a problem the girl was always getting put in and out of school because her father was always hiding from the cops. He had done something very bad, but this time, if they found him, they were going to take him to prison for a very long time. As time passed the girl’s father got caught and got put in prison for forty-six years. The girl’s mother knew she had to change or else her kids were going to get taken from her and get put into a foster home. The mom decided she had to be strong not only for herself but for her children. She and her kids moved to Las Vegas, NV. Not long after she meet a guy and fell in love with him. He gave them a place to live and loved the kids as if they were his own. The mom got pregnant and was very happy. She thanked God for giving her another chance to change her change. She had also thanked the girl for not being like her family and showing her there is more to life if one knows how to live it. As time passed and the girl turned eleven years old, she grew to have hate for her father for not being there for her and her family when they needed him. She told her mother she never wanted to see him again. The mother told her daughter that all must be forgiven and no matter what, he is her father and that she should go visit him in prison. So the girl went to visit her father but was still upset at him. Her father told her that he was very sorry and would do anything to go back and change the past. The girl hugged her father and told him she’d forgive him. The father was crying of joy and told her he was very happy she turned out to be someone different. Today the girl still goes to visit her father any chance she gets and is patiently waiting for him to come out and be a part of her life all over again. The girl is now attending Desert Pines High School and is in the tenth grade. Written by a student of James Jones, October 2004 Reprinted with permission, All rights reserved.
