CDE Common Data Environment A tool to collect, store and organise data and information inside a BIM process. Open-source A term denoting that a product includes permission to use its source code, design documents, or content. Introduction How the first app was received by students The first version of the tools consisted of an implementation of the Learning Management System Claroline coupled with a Visio-conferencing system (Big Blue-Button). Two experimentations were made with these tools: - Experimentation #1 in Wuppertal (Germany - Nov 2017) - Experimentation #2 in Liège (Belgium – March 2018) Picture 1 - Wuppertal - 11/2017 Picture 2 - Liège - 03/2018 It appeared during those events that although an LMS is an interesting tool for a teacher to schedule and give courses, it lacks modern communication tools and modern user interface. Indeed, the ability to send mail inside a software is not sufficient when you want to manage projects. On top of that, the interfaces aren’t intuitive which made those tools hard to use for the outsiders. The European Commission's support for the production of this publication does not constitute an endorsement of the contents, which reflect the views only of the authors, and the Commission cannot be held responsible for any use which may be made of the information contained therein. 4 http://bimgame.eu Moreover, since we wanted students to work in teams and to work towards finding solutions to real-life matters the way they would do in a company, we needed a tool closer to professionals’ software. Although students liked the idea of a role playing game, they felt limited by the use of an LMS. As a matter of fact, we stated that providing a Common Data Environment would be more on purpose. We already knew that big companies were providing such applications. However, our goal was to propose a tool or a set of tools not linked in any way with a company. So that every student can practice our pedagogical scenarios whatever software they are using in their universities without having to pay anything nor to rely on free limited membership to any company. For instance, our partners in Cuenca university told us that they were using several software such as Google Drive, Slack and Trello to create a kind of CDE. These are great tools, but their usage is limited unless you pay for more functionalities and more storage. On top of that, the ethics of the companies behind these tools are often questioned. We then decided to write new specifications of what our application or set of applications should be. Collaboration with the LIRIS Our meetings with Jean-Charles Marty from the LIRIS in Lyon stressed the importance of “awareness” during a training session. Picture 3 – LIRIS Lab - Lyon - 01/2017 The European Commission's support for the production of this publication does not constitute an endorsement of the contents, which reflect the views only of the authors, and the Commission cannot be held responsible for any use which may be made of the information contained therein. 5 http://bimgame.eu BIMGAME project shares with the LIRIS the idea of providing a role-playing game to the students. So students have to be aware of their role, the roles of the others and their goals when they are playing a pedagogical scenario. Picture 4 – LIRIS Lab - Lyon - 01/2017 Our pedagogical engineering take this aspect into account, as well as the application which will provide a mean for students to know who they are and what they are up to. New specifications These are the common features provided by a CDE that we wanted to include in our application: Accessible from the Internet - A web interface, responsive and compliant with modern browsers - A desktop client to synchronise shared data between computers - A mobile client available both on Android and IOS - Accessible to users with visual impairments The management of information, that is to say all the documents and files related to the projects - Creation of folders - Creation of text documents - Creation of spreadsheets - Creation of diagrams - Upload of files - Sharing of information among users or group of users The European Commission's support for the production of this publication does not constitute an endorsement of the contents, which reflect the views only of the authors, and the Commission cannot be held responsible for any use which may be made of the information contained therein. 6 http://bimgame.eu The management of the project, that is to say the schedules, calendars and tasks assignation - Workflow management - Groupware - Account management Efficient tools for communication - Team chat - Video-conferencing -
