    International Journal of Communication 15(2021), 1810–1835 1932–8036/20210005 Cultural Production in Transnational Culture: An Analysis of Cultural Creators in the Korean Wave DAL YONG JIN1 Simon Fraser University, Canada By employing cultural production approaches in conjunction with the global cultural economy, this article attempts to determine the primary characteristics of the rapid growth of local cultural industries and the global penetration of Korean cultural content. It documents major creators and their products that are received in many countries to identify who they are and what the major cultural products are. It also investigates power relations between cultural creators and the surrounding sociocultural and political milieu, discussing how cultural creators develop local popular culture toward the global cultural markets. I found that cultural creators emphasize the importance of cultural identity to appeal to global audiences as well as local audiences instead of emphasizing solely hybridization. Keywords: cultural production, Hallyu, cultural creators, transnational culture Since the early 2010s, the Korean Wave (Hallyu in Korean) has become globally popular, and media scholars (Han, 2017; T. J. Yoon & Kang, 2017) have paid attention to the recent growth of Hallyu in many parts of the world. Although the influence of Western culture has continued in the Korean cultural market as well as elsewhere, local cultural industries have expanded the exportation of their popular culture to several regions in both the Global South and the Global North. Social media have especially played a major role in disseminating Korean culture (Huang, 2017; Jin & Yoon, 2016), and Korean popular culture is arguably reaching almost every corner of the world.

This study pursues an investigation of the influences of Korean popular culture on preference for Korean restaurants through a country image of Korea. In addition, the study examines the influences of Korean culture in terms of Korean celebrities, Korean television dramas, and Korean popular music on an image of Korea. A quantitative approach is applied in this research. This study is beneficial to Vietnamese restaurant operators and governments by providing the information for developing strategies for expanding our ethnic restaurants into Vietnam markets and formulating governmental and industrial policies for globalization of ethnic food and restaurant industries.     A Construção Nostálgica na Série de K-dramas “Reply”1 Daniela Mazur Doutoranda do Programa de Pós Graduação em Comunicação da Universidade Federal Fluminense Resumo A Coreia do Sul atualmente se posiciona como um dos polos importantes de produção de ficção seriada em meio aos fluxos globais. Os dramas de TV sul-coreanos, também conhecidos como K-dramas, são representações da indústria de entretenimento da Coreia do Sul, com marcas culturais e históricas caras ao país. O corpus de análise deste artigo é a série de K-dramas Reply, composta por Reply 1997 (tvN, 2012), Reply 1994 (tvN, 2013) e Reply 1988 (tvN, 2015-2016), que são retratos romantizados do passado recente da Coreia do Sul e de sua guinada pop atual. Essas narrativas exemplificam o atual esforço pela renegociação do imaginário narrativo do país através da tentativa de um acionamento nostálgico positivo de momentos delicados da história do país, a fim de ressignificá-los em favor da diplomacia política, cultural e econômica no cenário internacional. Introdução Conhecido no passado como um país eremita e pouco influente na região, a Coreia do Sul soma mais de cinco mil anos de história marcados especialmente por invasões e intervenções externas e conflitos armados, se mantendo ainda hoje como um símbolo dos resquícios existentes da Guerra Fria. Contudo, essa nação que vive em meio a uma guerra em cessar-fogo há mais de 60 anos com a irmã do Norte, hoje também é casa de inovações tecnológicas e de cultura pop. Em apenas 20 anos, a Coreia do Sul deixou de ser vista como um país pouco influente no Leste Asiático para se transformar em um polo reconhecido de produção de cultura pop asiática (JOO, 2011) e na atual fronte identitária da região.
