To complete this project, you will need the following file: New blank WordPad document You will save your file as: Lastname_Firstname_w7_03_Feeds 1. On the taskbar, click the Internet Explorer button . 2. On the Command bar, click the Tools button, and then click Manage Add-ons. 3. In the lower-left corner of the Manage Add-ons dialog box, click Find more toolbars and extensions. 4. Maximize the Add-ons Gallery window, and then scroll to the bottom of the page. In the vertical navigation bar, below Internet Explorer 8 only, click Web Slices. If that link no longer displays on the page, navigate to www.ieaddons.com/en/webslices. Compare your screen with Figure 1. If necessary, scroll to display the Get the latest eBay.com Daily Deals thumbnail and button. A Web Slice is a portion of a web page to which you can subscribe to get updated information. For example, the eBay.com Daily Deals Web Slice informs you whenever there is a new deal from eBay.com. Below Weather from Bing, click the Add to Internet Explorer button. Point to the weather summary, and then compare your screen with Figure 2. When you open a web page from the Web Slices Add-ons Gallery, any available Web Slices are surrounded by a border. The Web Slice button displays next to the Web Slice and on the Command bar. Read the Internet Explorer message that displays, and then click the Add to Favorites Bar button. 7. Close the weather - Bing window, and then Close the Web Slices - Add-ons Gallery window. Close the Manage Add-ons dialog box. When a Web Slice has updated information, it will be highlighted on the Favorites bar. Web Slices have links to see more information. Here, the hyperlink at the top of the Web Slice opens the entire Bing Weather page, from which its slice receives its information. In the Favorites Center, click the Feeds tab. In the upper-right corner of the Favorites Center, click the Pin the Favorites Center button . Compare your screen with Figure 4. Feeds, also known as RSS feeds, are used to subscribe to frequently updated web content. An RSS feed typically displays a list of hyperlinks—often the headlines to news articles—that you click when you want to see the page. Click the Microsoft at Home link to display the RSS feed. The Microsoft at Home RSS Feed displays links with tips for using your home computer. The content of this feed changes frequently. 11. In the address bar, type msn.com and then press J. Scroll to the bottom of the page, and then if necessary, scroll to the right to display the RSS hyperlink in the page footer. Compare your screen with Figure 5. Many websites provide several RSS feeds that focus on a particular topic. Here, the MSN website provides several different categories of news to which you can subscribe. MSN.com RSS feeds hyperlink Figure 5 12. Click the RSS hyperlink. Alternately, type rss.msn.com and then press J. 13. In the list of RSS feeds, under MSN Home Page, click Sports. At the top of the page, read the information about the feed, and then click Subscribe to this feed. In the Subscribe to this Feed dialog box, replace the text in the Name box with MSN Sports Compare your screen with Figure 6, and then click Subscribe. Start WordPad, and type your first and last name. Add a new line, and then type Windows 7 Chapter 3 More Skills 14 Add a new line, and then Paste the snip. 17. Click Save , and then in the Save As dialog box, navigate to your Windows 7 Chapter 3 folder. In the File name box, type Lastname_Firstname_w7_03_Feeds and then click Save. If you are printing this project, print the WordPad document. 18. Exit WordPad. On the Favorites Center Feeds tab, right-click MSN Sports, and then click Delete. Read the message that displays, and then click Yes. Close the Favorites Center pane. 19. On the Favorites bar, right-click the Bing weather Web Slice button, and then click Delete. Read the message that displays, and then click Yes. 20. Close Internet Explorer. Submit the printout or WordPad file as directed by your instructor.
