The following table describes these applications: Use this software: When you want to: Control Program • Install or replace a print cartridge • Align the print cartridge • Monitor print jobs and print cartridge ink levels Using the printer software • Print a test page • Change DOS settings • Control how the Control Program appears Printer Driver • Change printer properties or setup • Choose the paper source • Choose page orientation • Choose different sizes and types of media • Adjust the quality of print jobs • Reset printer defaults Spool Manager * • View the print jobs in your queue • Pause or cancel a print job • Requeue a print job * Windows 3.1, 3.11 only. If you are using Windows 95, 98 a print queue was installed when you loaded Windows. Note: Lexmark 1000 Series ColorFine is the name of the printer driver and software for the Lexmark 1100 Color Jetprinter. 6 Using the printer software Opening the Control Program Using the printer software The method of opening the Control Program varies, depending on the type of operating system you are using. Windows 95, 98 1 From the Start menu, click Programs. 2 Click the Lexmark 1000 Series program group. 3 Click Lexmark 1000 Series Control Program on LPTx. Windows 3.1, 3.11 From the Lexmark 1000 Series program group, double-click the Control Program icon. Opening the Printer Driver The way you open the printer driver affects how the changes you make are saved. If you open the printer driver from: Then the changes apply: Your application Only to that print job The Printers folder (Windows 95, 98) To all print jobs The Control Program (Windows 3.1, 3.11) To all print jobs Opening the printer driver from an application You can open the printer driver from almost any application. To open the driver: 1 Open the application's File menu. 2 Choose Print (or Printer) Setup. 3 In the Printer Setup dialog box, click the Properties, Options, or Setup button (depending on the application). Using the printer software 7 Opening the printer driver from Windows 3.1, 3.11 To open the driver from the Control Program: 1 Open the Lexmark 1000 Series Control Program. 2 Click the Windows Printing tab. 3 Click the Windows Driver Setup button. Opening the printer driver from Windows 95, 98 Using the printer software To open the driver from the Printers folder: 1 From the Start menu, choose Settings, then choose Printers. 2 From the Printers folder, right-click the printer icon for the Lexmark 1000 Series ColorFine. 3 Choose Properties from the sidebar menu. Opening the Spool Manager You can open the Spool Manager (Windows 3.1 or 3.11 only) from the Lexmark 1000 Series Control Program. To open the Spool Manager: 1 Open the Lexmark 1000 Series Control Program. 2 Click the Windows Printing tab. 3 Click the Spool Manager button. 8 Using the printer software Loading paper and other media Loading paper and other media Chapter Three The Lexmark 1100 Color Jetprinter prints on plain paper, envelopes, index cards, post cards, labels, transparencies, coated paper, glossy film, photo paper, iron-on transfers, greeting cards, and banner paper. Loading paper in the sheet feeder The sheet feeder holds up to 30 sheets of plain paper. To load paper: 1 Pull the paper load lever toward you to open the sheet feeder. Loading paper and other media 2 Insert paper. 10 Loading paper and other media 3 Slide the left paper guide to the left edge of the paper. Loading paper and other media 4 Push the paper load lever away from you to close the sheet feeder.

PETERS: Could you respond to Mr. Green- stein’s parade of horribles of, you know, the ball point pen, . the car; all of the items in commerce that could in fact be controlled by a computer pro- gram so that the original manufacturer is the only one who can do replacement parts? MR. OMAN: This is, in my view, speculation.2 Mr. Oman, understandably, was arguing that the only question at hand was the particular dispute between his client and Static Control Components, Inc. (“SCC”) regarding SCC’s sale of microchips that enabled the reuse of Lexmark’s toner cartridges. However, broad questions of policy regarding control of interoperability and the avail- ability of replacement parts for almost any item of commerce were in fact on the line. The same type of copyright enforcement scheme at issue in the controversy between Lexmark and SCC could be used to require consumers to buy gas from the same company that sold their cars, compact discs from the same company that sold their stereos, and milk from the same company that sold their refrigerators.
