When you installed the software for your printer, several small applications were installed on your computer. The following table describes these applications:

To open the driver: 1 Open the application's File menu. 2 Choose Print (or Printer) Setup. 3 In the Printer Setup dialog box, click the Properties, Options, or Setup button (depending on the application).

Using the printer software To open the driver from the Printers folder: 1 From the Start menu, choose Settings, then choose Printers. 2 From the Printers folder, right-click the printer icon for the Lexmark 1000 Series ColorFine. 3 Choose Properties from the sidebar menu.

This section describes how to load paper, an envelope, a card, and other specialty media in your printer.

Loading paper in the sheet feeder The sheet feeder holds up to 30 sheets of plain paper. To load paper: 1 Pull the paper load lever toward you to open the sheet feeder. Loading paper and other media

4 Push the paper load lever away from you to close the sheet feeder.

5 You are now ready to print. Make sure you select the correct paper type and size in the printer software. For help, see “Using the printer software” on page 5.

Loading paper and other media 11 Loading specialty media Follow the steps to load one sheet of thick paper, an envelope, greeting card, iron-on transfer, label sheet, or other specialty media. You must load all types of specialty media one piece at a time. To load specialty media: 1 Pull the paper load lever toward you and remove any paper from the sheet feeder. • Always place the preferred print side facing you. • Insert envelopes so that the stamp location is in the lower right-hand corner. • Insert index cards and postcards vertically so the shortest side is fed into the printer first. Note: The printer software prompts you to load another piece of specialty media when you select more than one copy on the Paper tab. 7 Slide the paper guide to the left edge of the media.

9 When you finish printing specialty media, close the specialty media guide so it is lying flat against the back of the sheet feeder.

Loading paper and other media 15 Loading banner paper You can purchase two types of banner paper. One is a long, single sheet of paper, while the other is known as continuous form-feed paper (regular-size sheets which are perforated to allow you to tear them apart). For best results, follow the steps below to load banner paper and select the appropriate options in the printer software.

Loading banner paper into the sheet feeder 1 Tear off a maximum of 10 sheets of banner paper. 2 If necessary, remove the perforated strip of tractor holes along each side of the banner paper. 8 Insert the leading edge of the first page into the sheet feeder until the printer automatically loads it.

Selecting the correct options for banner printing To select the appropriate options for banner printing from the printer software: 1 From your application's File menu, click Printer Setup (or Print...). 2 From the dialog box, click Properties, Options, or Setup (depending on your application). 3 Click the Paper tab. 4 From the Paper Size scroll box, select the banner paper size you are using. 5 In the Paper Source area, make sure Manual/Specialty Media is selected. 6 Click OK. 7 Send the print job. Note: When you have finished banner printing, return the paper support and specialty media guide to their normal positions before printing other documents.

Loading paper and other media 19 Recommended paper types

This section describes paper, transparency, envelope, index card, post card, label, glossy film, photo paper, greeting card, and iron-on transfer types and sizes you can use with your printer.

Plain paper You can get good print quality on many types of plain paper. Since the quality of plain paper varies widely, you should test the print quality before buying large quantities of paper. You can use letter, legal, A4, A5, A6, B5, executive, and index card size Loading paper and other media paper with your printer. Use paper that meets the following specifications in the sheet feeder:

Length 127 to 432 mm 5.0 to 17.0 in. Width 88 to 215 mm 3.5 to 8.5 in. Weight 76 to 90 g/sqm 20 to 24 lb. Thickness 0.071 to 0.191 mm 0.0028 to 0.0075 in.

Coated paper For the best color or black and white printing results using black and color print cartridges, use a coated paper such as Lexmark's High Resolution Premium Inkjet paper. To order this paper from Lexmark, use Lexmark part number 1402780 (letter size) or 1402781 (A4 size).

Envelopes The printer supports the following envelope sizes and card types:

20 Loading paper and other media The acceptable dimensions for an envelope loaded in the sheet feeder are: Loading paper and other media

Length 190.5 to 364 mm 7.50 to 14.33 in. Width 76.2 to 215 mm 3.0 to 8.5 in. Weight 76 to 90 g/sqm 20 to 24 lb.

Note: For best results, feed one at a time. Do not use envelopes that have: • Windows, holes, perforations, cutouts, or deep embossing • A metal clasp, a string tie, or metal folding bars • Peel-off sealing strips • Contents enclosed

Transparencies, glossy film, and photo paper The printer supports letter and A4-size transparencies, glossy film, and photo paper. Use transparencies, glossy film, or photo paper designed for an inkjet printer. Do not use transparencies, glossy film, or photo paper designed for copiers, laser printers, or pen plotters. For best results: • Feed one sheet at a time. • Handle only on the edges. Do not touch the side being printed on. • Store unused paper in the original packaging. • Do not store in excessively hot or humid areas. • Be careful not to touch the printed surface until the ink is dry. • Remove each sheet as it exits the printer and allow it to dry before stacking. • Cover the printed area with plain paper when storing.

Loading paper and other media 21 Labels The printer supports letter and A4 size label sheets. Feed one label sheet at a time. For best results, labels used in the printer should meet the following requirements: • Do not use label sheets with a slick backing material. • Be sure the adhesive does not come in contact with any part of the printer. • Use full label sheets. Partially used sheets can cause labels to peel off during printing and can damage the printer. Loading paper and other media Greeting cards with envelopes Use Lexmark Inkjet Greeting Cards, part number 1372482 (letter) or 70X7254 (A4). Each greeting card comes with an envelope. For best results, feed one at a time.

Iron-On transfers To create colorful, custom-designed T-shirts or other items, use Lexmark Iron-On Transfers, part number 1372480 (letter) or 1402519 (A4). Note: For best results, feed one at a time.

Removing a print cartridge If you need to remove a print cartridge before you install a different one, follow these steps:

3 From your computer, open the printer’s Control Program. For help, see “Opening the Control Program” on page 7. 4 Click the Cartridges tab.

Caring for your print cartridge The print cartridge carrier automatically moves to the load position and the Change Cartridge dialog box appears on your computer screen. Note: If you are interrupted and leave the print cartridge carrier in the load position too long, the carrier returns to the far right position. The Cartridges tab remains displayed on your screen. If this happens: a Click Cancel. b Click Install Cartridge. 6 Pull the handle of the print cartridge toward you until you hear a click.

8 Decide whether you want to dispose of or store the cartridge you removed. See “Disposing of used cartridges” on page 26 or “Storing an extra print cartridge” on page 27.

Disposing of used cartridges Do not shake used print cartridges. The remaining ink can leak. Before discarding the used print cartridge, put it in a leak-proof bag.

To store an extra print cartridge in the storage unit: 1 Remove the cardboard insert covering the print cartridge storage unit and discard it.

2 Insert the extra print cartridge into the print cartridge storage unit located on the back of the printer.

If the print cartridge moves loosely in the carrier, it is not locked into place. Repeat this step.

When you install a new print cartridge, you should use the Align Cartridge feature to help align the printhead. This ensures that you get the best print quality from your Lexmark 1100 Color Jetprinter. To align the print cartridge: 1 From the printer’s Control Program, click the Cartridges tab. 2 Click the Align Cartridge button. The Align Cartridge dialog box appears on your screen. The printer prints a test page with a bidirectional alignment pattern. Each

3 On the printed test page, locate the number under the Bidirectional Alignment pattern that comes closest to forming a straight line. 4 In the Align Cartridge dialog box, enter the number as the Bidirectional Align setting. 5 Click OK.

Cleaning the print nozzles

When you clean the print nozzles, a test line prints so you can see if the cleaning process was successful. Use the nozzle test: • When you suspect the nozzles are clogged • When characters are not printing completely To clean the nozzles: 1 Make sure there is paper in the sheet feeder. 2 From the printer’s Control Program, click the Cartridges tab.

32 Caring for your print cartridge 3 Click the Clean Print Nozzles button. The printer feeds a sheet of Caring for your print cartridge paper and prints the nozzle test pattern. 4 Examine the test pattern. This example shows a test pattern of a black nozzle functioning correctly.

5 Compare the diagonal line above the printed bars to the diagonal line below the printed bars. Look for a break in the diagonal lines. A broken line indicates clogged nozzles. If the bottom line has fewer breaks, or better print quality than the top line, run the test two more times. If the print quality is satisfactory after running the test three times, the print nozzles are clean. You do not need to complete the remaining steps. If the print quality of both lines is not satisfactory after running the test three times, go to step 6.

Caring for your print cartridge 33 6 Remove and reinstall the print cartridge. For help, see “Installing or replacing a print cartridge” on page 24. 7 Repeat the nozzle test. 8 If the lines are still broken, wipe the print cartridge nozzles. For instructions, see “Wiping the print nozzles and contacts”.

Wiping the print nozzles and contacts

If print quality does not improve after cleaning the print nozzles (see “Cleaning the print nozzles” on page 32), the problem may be caused by Caring for your print cartridge dried ink on the print cartridge nozzles. To wipe the print cartridge’s nozzles and contacts: 1 Remove the print cartridge from the printer. For help, see “Removing a print cartridge” on page 24. 2 Use a clean cloth, dampened with water only, to gently clean the entire copper colored area, including the nozzles and contacts. When cleaning the color print cartridge, wipe the nozzles in one direction so the colors do not mix.

To dissolve dried ink, hold the damp cloth against the nozzles for about three seconds. Gently blot and wipe dry.

For help, see “Cleaning the print nozzles” on page 32. 5 If the nozzle test line is still broken, clean the print cartridge carrier contacts. For help, see “Cleaning print cartridge carrier contacts” on page 35.

Cleaning print cartridge carrier contacts

Clean the print cartridge carrier contacts only if you have cleaned and wiped the print nozzles and print quality is still unsatisfactory. To clean the print cartridge carrier contacts: 1 From the printer’s Control Program, click the Cartridges tab. For help opening the Control Program, see “Opening the Control Program” on page 7. 2 From the Cartridges tab, click the Install Cartridge button to move the print cartridge carrier to the load position. 3 Unplug the printer power cord. This forces the print cartridge carrier to remain in the load position.

5 Remove the print cartridge. For help, see “Removing a print cartridge” on page 24. 6 Use a clean, dry cloth to clean the cartridge carrier contacts inside the printer.

9 Plug the printer power cord into an electrical outlet.

10 You do not want to reset the ink level counter. Click Old Black Car- tridge or Old Color Cartridge, depending on which you installed, to return the cartridge carrier to the far right position. 11 Test the print cartridge by choosing the Clean Print Nozzles button on the Cartridges tab. If the print quality has not improved after this cleaning process, replace your print cartridge. If print quality still does not improve, your printer may require service.

Caring for your print cartridge 37 Preserving print cartridges

To ensure the longest life from your print cartridge and optimum performance from your printer: • Keep a print cartridge in its packaging until you are ready to install it. • Do not remove a print cartridge from the printer except to replace, clean, or store it in a print cartridge storage unit. The print cartridge will not print correctly if removed from the printer and left exposed for an extended period of time. • Do not refill print cartridges. Refilling empty print cartridges may Caring for your print cartridge invalidate your warranty. Incompatible inks can cause damage to the printhead or to the printer. For best results, use Lexmark supplies with the printer. • Store the print cartridge in the same environment as the printer.

Your printer software will not function properly unless you use an IEEE 1284-compliant parallel cable with your printer.

Depending on the thickness of your paper, the sheet feeder can hold up to 30 sheets of paper. • The paper guide does not cause the paper to bow in the sheet feeder. • You are using the correct type of paper. • The paper guide is against the side of the paper. • The specialty media guide is not in the upright position. • The printer is on a flat, level surface.

Depending on the thickness of your paper, the sheet feeder can hold up to 30 sheets of paper. • Make sure you are using the correct type of paper. • Remove paper from the sheet feeder and flex or fan the paper. • When loading paper, do not force the paper down into the printer. Note: Humid conditions may cause some papers to stick together.

Left and Right Margins Left and right margin settings must be at least 6.35 mm (0.25 in.) each for all paper sizes except A4. For A4 size paper, left and right margin settings must be at least 3.37 mm (0.133 in.) each.

Top and Bottom Margins The top margin must be set to at least 3.39 mm (0.14 in.). The bottom margin setting for all paper sizes must be 12.7 mm (0.5 in.). For best printing results, use at least 16mm (0.63 in.).

Poor print quality at left, Like other printers, your printer cannot print in the extreme left, right, or bottom edge of right, or bottom edges of an envelope. To avoid poor print envelope quality at the edges of the envelope, we recommend using these minimum margin settings:

Also called hard disk or fixed disk drive. icon A representation or symbol. inkjet A non-impact printing technology that creates characters and graphics by the composition of programmed patterns of ink dots. interface A data conversion device that allows communication between the printer and the computer. MB (megabyte) A unit of measure for storage capacity. One megabyte equals 1,048,576 bytes. parallel interface A type of connection that links a printer to a computer, by which all 8 bits of a character are sent at the same time. See also interface. print cartridge The ink reservoir and printhead unit. printer driver A program that translates the language of a software application to the language of the printer so the two can communicate data. printer setup The printer driver is designed to provide the best print output default setting for your printer.
