The largest exhibition ever staged at MoPOP, MARVEL: Universe of Super Heroes featured more than 300 artifacts from the wildly popular Marvel comic and film franchise. Co-developed with Marvel and SC Productions this blockbuster exhibition brings an in-depth look at some of contemporary pop culture’s most prominent characters, films, and television shows to audiences around the world.

One of our most popular evergreen exhibitions, Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses, traveled to Brazil where it garnered critical acclaim and several hundred thousand attendees in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The exhibition relaunched at MoPOP in March 2018 in a new gallery and with additional content, renewing MoPOP’s celebration of grunge and the Pacific Northwest music scene.

Pearl Jam: Home and Away — a celebration of the past, present and future of one of the world’s most popular and enduring bands — drove a record- breaking opening day attendance with 7,666 visitors. The exhibition, created in collaboration with Pearl Jam and Ten Club, is a first-hand look at the band’s journey from 1990 to the present through more than 500 artifacts directly from the band members, including instruments, stage props, original art, and a photo op featuring the original towering letters from the album cover of Pearl Jam’s debut album, Ten.

MoPOP’s Sound Off! is the premier 21-and-under music showcase and competition in the Pacific Northwest. It offers participants the opportunity to perform their original music in MoPOP’s Sky Church, connect with peer musicians, receive mentorship from industry leaders, and become part of an artistic community in one of the nation’s most vibrant music scenes.

In 2018, Sound Off! had 33 contestants from all over the Pacific Northwest, narrowed down to four finalists: Alex Cade, Baja Boy, Huey and the InFLOWentials, and i///u. Finalists had the opportunity to perform at premier Northwest music festivals, including Timber! Music Festival, Northwest Folklife Festival, and Bumbershoot.

MoPOP partnered with the International Film Festival to put on the annual Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival (SFFSFF). Bringing together industry professionals in filmmaking, science fiction, and fantasy, SFFSFF showcases new and groundbreaking works of short-form genre film.

MoPOP continued its partnerships with Arts Corps and Grammy Award-winning duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis to offer youth ages 16–19 a four-week intensive summer hip-hop artist residency focusing on creative songwriting, performance techniques, and beat production.

At the end of this intensive residency, all participants got the chance to record original tracks at a professional studio, and put on a final performance in MoPOP’s Sky Church.

MoPOP | 2018 REPORT TO OUR COMMUNITY 14 PEARL JAM: HOME AND AWAY OPENING WEEKEND UNITED WAY PARTNERSHIP

During the opening weekend of Pearl Jam: Home and Away, MoPOP partnered with United Way of King County to benefit Pearl Jam’s “Home Shows” program: part of the band’s Vitalogy Foundation to fight homelessness in King County. Visitors created more than 1,900 “comfort kits” to be delivered to homeless service agencies around the Seattle area.

Gallery Illuminator volunteers help visitors take a deep dive into MoPOP’s galleries and exhibitions. Volunteers welcome visitors, assist with technology, provide directions, highlight artifacts, and provide detailed exhibition tours. Illuminators also facilitate gallery educational carts – branded “Pop Stops” in 2018 – that deepen the guest experience and provide hands-on activities in the galleries for visitors of all ages. These include art-making, gallery games, touchable objects, and conversation starters.

In 2018, we were able to offer more than 600 community members free tickets and special programming thanks to the Community Access Partners Program. More than 1,500 people were able to visit the museum with aid from Museums for All, a program that provides access to families who receive EBT benefits. In addition, we welcomed more than 3,400 visitors through our doors with our Library Pass program, done in conjunction with King County and Seattle Public Libraries.

On October 7, 2018 we celebrated the life of Chris Cornell, the late Soundgarden and Audioslave vocalist and guitarist, with the unveiling of a commemorative statue commissioned by the late musician’s wife, Vicky Cornell. The life-size bronze statue, sculpted by artist Nick Marra, was donated to MoPOP, and now lives near the south entrance of the building.

The annual MoPOP Pop Conference, first held in 2002, brings ambitious music discourse from critics, musicians, and dedicated fans into a collective conversation. 2018’s Pop Con, titled What Difference Does It Make? Music and Gender, explores activism, artistic expression, and finding one’s voice within the din of today’s revelations and debates. The conference was moderated by Ann Powers, and panelists included Jackie Fox, Madame Gandhi, Megan Jasper, Paloma McLardy aka Palmolive, and Francisca Valenzuela.

Pop+ events offer free access to Sky Church, specially curated artifacts on display, and video blocks based on the theme. In 2018 we put on Pop+ Hip Hop, highlighting hip hop’s evolution, its diverse voices, the arts and fashion movements it’s sparked, and more. We displayed Tupac’s handwritten essay, “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death.” There was also a dance performance curated by Tracey Wong, music by DJ crew NW Portablists, a fashion show, and an interactive art activity.

At MoPOP’s annual Halloween party, the Fashionably Undead Bash, visitors experienced a terrifying night of DJs, dancing, and dangerous fashion. Partygoers took part in a costume contest to win killer prizes, explored the museum’s most haunted spaces, and danced their fears away surrounded by fellow fans.

At Campout Cinema, MoPOP invited guests to get comfy and relax under LED stars. With themed drinks and photo ops, as well as trivia, giveaways, and other surprises, every Campout Cinema event offered a unique movie-going experience. Audiences experienced new perspectives and dove deep into the filmmaking process with special guest interviews, readings, and curated content.
