  • The Five Pits Trail
    The Five Pits Trail Walkers, cyclists and horse riders can all enjoy the countryside of the Five Pits Trail. Follow the 5.5 mile off-road surfaced route from Grassmoor Country Park to Tibshelf Ponds or extend your route to 7.5 miles by exploring the route through Williamthorpe Ponds and Holmewood Woodlands. The trail mostly follows the route of the Great Central Railway. Since the large collieries and smaller pits along the railway closed, the landscape has changed dramatically. Parts of the land were opencast and Holmewood Sculpture Funded by the Young Roots Heritage Lottery Fund, students from most of the original railway line removed. Deincourt School worked with artists from Gotham-D to design this sculpture. Using metal, stone and wood, the sculpture shows leaves and keys (seeds) and takes its inspiration from both the Now you will find a rolling trail that has some long steep slopes. This may limit some people's access in places - look for natural and industrial heritage of the area. the 'steep slope' symbols on the map. There are no stiles or steps and you will find seats along the way to stop, rest and enjoy the views. Look out for the information boards with large site maps showing some of the heritage and wildlife along the trail. Mansfield Road Walking Routes Williamthorpe Walkers can explore the surrounding landscape on Public Rights of Way by following one of the Five Ponds Pits Trail Circular Walks. These walks are between 2.5 and 5.5 miles in length and each walk is waymarked This network of ponds, with a coloured disc.

  • Ralph Marsden (1895 – 1937)
    Ralph Marsden (1895 – 1937) Ralph Marsden (1895 – 1937) was born in the summer of 1895 in the Chesterfield registration district. His parents were Samson Marsden (1861 – 1940) and Annie Hunt (1870 – 1955). His father had been born in Brampton, Derbyshire and his mother was from Tupton, Derbyshire. Ralph was their second child following their marriage in 1891. On the 1901 Census Ralph was living with his parents, one older sibling, two younger siblings and his mothers sister on Hawthorne Street in Hasland. His father was employed as a coal miner – hewer and his aunty Elizabeth was working in a box factory. The 1911 Census shows that the family had moved from Hasland to 22 Charlesworth Street, Carr Vale, Bolsover. Ralph aged 15 was already employed as a coal miner. His father and older brother, Thomas, were also employed as coalminers. On the outbreak of WW1, Ralph signed up and became a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA). His regiment number was 59509. During the war the RGA expanded from 32 Regular and Territorial Force batteries in 1914 to 117 by the end of the war. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. The British War Medal was instituted on the 26th July 1919 for award to those who had rendered service between the 5th August 1914, the day following the British declaration of war against the German Empire, and the 11th November 1918, both dates inclusive. The Victory Medal was issued to all those who received the 1914 Star or the 1914 – 15 Star, and to most of those who were awarded the British War Medal.

Councillor P Riggott expressed his concerns that the plans at the Farm will not just effect the residents of the Parish of Clay Cross but also the residents of Ashover, Stretton, Wessington and of course Handley itself. From reading through the application is was clear that no consideration has been given to local residents and that the Premises Licence is being sought for money making purposes only; the applicants should have spoken to the community first. Police Consultation It was reported that crime is low at the moment in the area but violent crime over the Easter bank holiday was high. Shed break-ins are on the increase at this time of year so be aware when leaving garden equipment, bikes etc on display or unattended. It was confirmed that Officers attending the Danesmoor Clean Up Initiative on the 25 April 2007 will be offering crime prevention advice to tenants and residents of the area. It was stated that once the Clean Up has been completed, the District Council/Rykneld Homes will monitor tenants who continue to litter their homes and gardens.

As you know 1 in 3 people with the virus have no symptoms and could be spreading it without realising so getting a test is an important tool to keep cases down. The major news for this week is that we remain on schedule for the rollout of our next PCN vaccination hubs which will bring the vaccination programme into more of our local communities - please see further information in the latest developments item below. I would be extremely grateful if you could share with appropriate colleagues as there is significant interest and we are sharing a lot of information across each week but it is difficult to reach everyone so thank you in advance of your cooperation. Dr Steve Lloyd Medical Director NHS Derby and Derbyshire CCG Latest developments Derby Arena will become Derbyshire’s largest COVID-19 vaccination site this week, while the number of primary care sites more than doubles and the county’s vaccination programme continues to accelerate. As well as Derby Arena, the new wave of site openings includes Sharley Park Leisure Centre in Clay Cross and these two sites are the first in the county to be converted from public spaces to carry out vaccinations. So far, vaccinations in Derbyshire have been carried out in care homes or at NHS facilities such as hospitals and GP surgeries. Vaccinations at the Arena are being carried out by five Primary Care Networks (PCNSs) working together, representing 30 GP practices around the city.
