  • Case Study Women in Politics: Reflections from Malaysia
International IDEA, 2002, Women in Parliament, Stockholm (http://www.idea.int). This is an English translation of Wan Azizah, “Perempuan dalam Politik: Refleksi dari Malaysia,” in International IDEA, 2002, Perempuan di Parlemen: Bukan Sekedar Jumlah, Stockholm: International IDEA, pp. 191-202. (This translation may vary slightly from the original text. If there are discrepancies in the meaning, the original Bahasa-Indonesia version is the definitive text). Case Study Women in Politics: Reflections from Malaysia Wan Azizah Women constitute half of humanity, and it follows that any decision-making, whether at the personal, family, societal or public levels, should be mindful of and involve the participation of women in the making of those decisions. Women’s political, social and economic rights are an integral and inseparable part of their human rights. Democracy is an inclusive process, and therefore in a functioning democracy, the points of view of different interest groups must be taken into account in formulating any decision. The interest and opinions of men, women and minorities must be part of that decision-making process. Yet far from being included in the decision-making process, women find themselves under-represented in political institutions. Numerous challenges confront women entering politics. Among them are lack of party support, family support and the "masculine model" of political life. Many feel that Malaysian society is still male dominated, and men are threatened by the idea of women holding senior posts. In the political sphere this is compounded by the high premium placed on political power. This makes some men even less willing to share power with women.

  • Malaysians for Beng Hock
Galas assault: Heng a liar, says TBH group Malaysiakini.com November 02, 2010 The 'Malaysians for Beng Hock' movement released a series of photographs today to prove that one of their members was manhandled by an MCA grassroots leader in Gua Musang, Kelantan, last Saturday. The movement's coordinator Ng Yap Hwa said the photographs proved that one of its members, Soh Cher Hai, was in fact violently pushed by an individual who has been identified as the Gua Musang MCA division secretary. NONEThe movement said the photographs were proof that Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Heng Seai Kie had issued misleading statements on the incident. Ng said the photographs also depict Heng not only witnessing the incident but leaving the scene and ignoring Soh, who was on the ground just a few feet from her. The group also challenged Heng's claim that Soh "nearly fell" during melee, that his fall was broken by others surrounding him. "Our evidence shows that Heng has lied outrageously," Ng told a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall in the federal capital today. He urged MCA to sack the division secretary who had acted violently and to take displinary action against Heng for lying. Meanwhile, Soh, who was also present at the press conference, said he reserved his right to take legal action against his assailant. Last Saturday, Soh had attempted to approach Heng after an evening function at Gua Musang, where the deputy minister was campaigning for BN in the Galas by-election. Heng: I emphatise with Soh The pushing incident involving Soh has turned into a campaign fiasco for the MCA as Gua Musang's Chinese community have expressed disdain over the matter.

  • Tourism Management at Taman Negara (National Park), Pahang, Malaysia: Conflict and Synergy
Tourism Management at Taman Negara (National Park), Pahang, Malaysia: Conflict and Synergy Yahaya Ibrahim* Mohd Sayuti Hassan** Abstract Many developing countries successfully use the attractions of nature to promote tourism in protected and unprotected areas. The attainment of sustainable tourism requires careful management of tourists to prevent deleterious effects on the environment, the host community and tourist satisfaction. The emphasis on conflict management and sustainable development is based on the diligent usage of available resources, especially in the context of planning, commitment and the involvement of management as well as the interested parties. The focus of the study is on‘ Taman Negara’ or National Park in Pahang, Malaysia which is a protected area of international importance as reflected in its listing as an Association of South East Asian (ASEAN) Heritage Site (DWNP, 1987). The main goal is to develop synergy and conflict management among the local government, communities and private sector strategy in order to realize the sustainable high quality nature based tourism that is promised by Taman Negara. To achieve this goal, the following objectives will be looked into. First, the characteristics of synergy and conflict among the departments related to Taman Negara; second, to examine the development by private sector and motivations of visitors to Taman Negara; third, to explore the issues that impact the local communities and tourists; and fourth, to ensure the preservation of nature and to promote the concept of sustainable use of resources at Taman Negara to ensure its sustainability both for the present and the future. This paper examines the management role of various departments over this national park.

  • Malaysian Design (Pg. 347-348)
Malaysian Design (pg. 347-348) Published in Bloomsbury Encyclopaedia of Design (2016) Volume 2. Chief in Editor : Clive Edward Zainurul, A. Rahman (Ph.D) Senior Lecturer in Visual Communication and Graphic Comm. Design School of the Arts, Universiti Sains Malaysia. Malaysia is a federation of thirteen states and three territories spread around the South China Sea, in the Malay Peninsula and the north and west of Borneo. Mostly populated by Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous peoples, its history and culture, and therefore design, has been infused by multiple ethnic groups, religions and beliefs. On the trading route between China and India, its location has interested many traders, invaders and settlers since the first century. Little is now clearly identifiable with this rich history, except for buildings like the Minangkabau’s Rumah Gadang in Negeri Sembilan or the Hindu Candis in Kedah, as well as artefacts like the kris (dagger) or even ceremonials like the Malay wedding. After hundred years of the Sultanate of Malacca (c. 1400-1511) and the rise of Islam in the region, European colonialism started with the Portuguese in 1511, which was then superceded by the Dutch in 1641. Their influences in urban architecture became widespread. During the nineteenth century, Siam took over the northern sultanates, while the United Kingdom was taking control over the southern ones and those of Borneo. By the early twentieth century, Siam ceded their states to the British Empire. The main European influence in Malaysia is British. They created modern Malaysia by progressively controlling each state and federating them. From law and government to buildings and education, everything was modelled after the colonial empire.

  • Charlotte Olympia Plots Expansion
Charlotte Olympia Plots Expansion By Samantha Conti LONDON — Charlotte Olympia, the small and self-funded British footwear and accessories brand, is using a cocktail of nostalgia, glamour and laughs to build an international business. By the end of this year, the company, launched by Charlotte Olympia Dellal in 2008 and run by Jimmy Choo and Halston veteran Bonnie Takhar, will have nine freestanding stores worldwide. The first was opened on London’s Maddox Street in 2010. Wholesale clients include Harrods, Neiman Marcus, On Pedder in Hong Kong, Bergdorf Goodman and Tsum in Moscow. The business is notching triple-digit sales growth and double-digit profit gains on the back of collections such as Archie’s Girls, which had a Pop Art-y, retro feel and was based on the comic books; Hollywoodland, which featured platforms and stiletto heels with celluloidlike straps or Art Deco flourishes, and Overboard, with platform peep-toes shaped like fish, or towering message-in-a-bottle heels. The brand is also well-known for its collection of slipper-inspired flats, especially the Kitty, with a cat’s face and perky ears, and the Charlotte’s Web with a spider’s work picked out on the vamp. “Charlotte Olympia is in a league of its own in terms of making shoes that are cute and funny,” said Helen David, fashion director of women’s wear, accessories, fine jewelry and children’s wear at Harrods. “The customer is almost anyone — unless they are completely lacking in a sense of humor.” David added that customers have even begun to collect the designs.

MCA a subsidiary of Umno? Malaysiakini.com March 17, 2011 COMMENT If MCA is not a subsidiary of Umno, why should the MCA president bring his letter of resignation from his party to see the Umno president-cum-prime minister in the first instant? This is exactly what happened when MCA president Chua Soi Lek held a meeting with Premier Najib Razak on last Tuesday morning. Chua (left) told reporters that he took his resignation letter with him with the intention to submit his immediate resignation as MCA president if a certain outstanding issue faced by Chinese independent school graduates could not be resolved with Najib. The outstanding issue surrounds the entry requirement of these graduates to government teachers' training colleges. The problem arose when the Education Ministry advertised on its website on Monday that Chinese school graduates may apply for admission to the teaching colleges provided they possess four credit passes in the government SPM. This caused alarm to the Chinese community which was earlier assured by the MCA president that the United Examination Certificate (UEC) held by Chinese school graduates was also acceptable for admission, provided the students scored at least four credit passes which should include the subject of Bahasa Malaysia from SPM. This ministry's announcement which ran contrary to Chua's announcement, was therefore a slap on his face. To redeem his credibility, Chua took a high-power team to meet Premier Najib. Apart from deputy president Liow Tiong Lai (health minister), vice-president Ng Yen Yen (tourism minister) and Youth chief Wee Ka Siong (deputy education minister) also tagged along.
