XXIEdition 2013 International Organ Festival “Città di Bergamo” September 27 - October 25 Under patronage of Comune di Bergamo PROVINCIA DI BERGAMO Assessorato alla Cultura e Spettacolo Assessorato alla Cultura Spettacolo Identità e Tradizioni supported by Comune di Bergamo PROVINCIA DI BERGAMO Cathedral of Bergamo The Festival history Parish of S.Alessandro della Croce The International Organ Festival “Città di Bergamo” was Parish of S.Maria Immacolata delle Grazie born at the beginning of the Nineties as a gamble among Parish of S.Alessandro in Colonna friends. Convinced of the need to bring to the town an international top circuit of concerts, especially considering the quality and variety of its organs, in 1992 the association Vecchia Bergamo organized a ‘test’ concert. Jean Guillou, one of the most famous contemporary players in the world and titular of the great organs at St. Eustache in Paris, was invited with a special mission: to introduce the improvisation on themes given by the audience in his program. As a matter of fact, this art which is considered as a fundamental pillar by all northern European organ Schools had practically disappeared from the Italian churches in the last fifty years. The clear goal was to show and consequently to measure the reactions of the public, on how much the interpreter’s capability in communicating his own unique feeling is of basic importance to create a larger popular interest around organ music, which up to that time was considered a specialists’ niche. The success was so great and enthusiastic that the year after the International Organ Festival started officially on the big Serassi organ at S.Alessandro della Croce in Pignolo: a perfect instrument, just restored, for portraying a wide range of music and, at the same time, for representing worthily the important organ builders’ tradition of our land.

  • Organ Teaching at the Paris Conservatoire by David Mccarthy
Organ Teaching at the Paris Conservatoire by David McCarthy After a prolonged low point in the late 18 th and early 19 th centuries, French organ music (both performance and composition) quickly reached a high level of development by the early 20 th century. Especially in the field of improvisation, French organists have for 100 years had an extremely good reputation. What makes this interesting, for an organ teacher, is that all these great musicians studied in one place (Paris), mostly at the Conservatoire (and the other two great organ- teaching schools, the Schola Cantorum, and the Niedermeyer School, were staffed mostly by graduates of the Conservatoire). But how were the French able to pull their organ culture up by its own bootstraps so quickly? I have put together a little history of how the Conservatoire classes were taught, as a source of guidelines for teaching and playing. The Conservatoire What is today known officially as the “Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse de Paris” has origins that go back to 1795. Its more modern form goes to 1822, though, when Luigi Cherubini was named the director, and instituted many of the traditions still used today. Most famous of these is the prix system, in which each June students compete against their colleagues for the premier prix, which guarantees them a comfortable living in a provincial music school. Those who get a deuxième prix, or a premier or deuxième accessit (in descending order of importance) can try the next year, though at the age of 30 (at some times 35) the student must leave.

FRENCH SYMPHONIES From the Nineteenth Century To The Present A Discography of CDs and LPs Prepared by Michael Herman Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) Born in Paris. Taught the piano by his great-aunt Charlotte Masson, he began his composing career at the age of 7. He studied at the Paris Conservatory where his teachers included François Benoist for organ and Jacques Fromental Halévy for composition. His vast orchestral output includes, in addition to the Symphonies, 5 Piano Concertos, 3 Violin Concertos, 2 Cello Concertos, Suites, Symphonic Poems, Concert Overtures and a number of additional works for soloists and orchestra. • Improvising in the French Romantic Style at the Organ
Improvising in the French Romantic Style at the Organ Nelson Quintal Degree Project, Master of Fine Arts in Music, Organ and related keyboard instrument Autumn Semester 2014 Degree Project, 30 higher education credits Master of Fine Arts in Music, Organ and related keyboard instruments Academy of Music and Drama, University of Gothenburg Autumn Semester 2014 Author: Nelson Quintal Title: Improvising in the French Romantic Style at the organ Supervisor: Joel Speerstra Examiner: Karin Nelson Keywords: Improvisation, organ, French romantic organ, César Franck, organ symphony ABSTRACT “Improvising in the French romantic style at the organ” has two important areas of focus. The first is the contextualization of César Franck in nineteenth-century France as musician and organ performer. I have chosen to study César Franck due to the fact that I feel related to his music because of its great expressivity and the emotion it transmits to those who come closer and get involved in his works. The second focus of my thesis is Improvisation in the French Romantic Style. In this part of the work I have documented the development of my own improvisation in context of the history of improvisation, and I also show the great value this art had in France during the second half of the nineteenth century. In conclusion, I present my own improvisation in the form of a romantic symphony with the theme of The Passion of St. Luke. 2 Table of Contents Pages Abstract .....................................................................................................................................
