Prof. Arch. Patrizia Falzone Architect and Full Professor at the Chair “Drawing and Survey for Architecture” Università degli Studi di Genova Nationality: Italian Università degli Studi di Genova Polytechnic School Department of Sciences for Architecture Stradone S. The studies and research highlighted many aspects of the Architectural knowledge throughout the possibility to conceive the Survey technique as the means of study, exploring and define the basic framework of every possible intervention, by defining an incisive knowledge always "in progress". The main areas of investigation, where the Architectural Survey is intended as the main scientific activity dealing with the different scales (building, city, territory) are: A - The territorial and geomorphological survey at different scales, in order to identify the characteristics and the identity of places, also for supporting the design phase. They criteria and methodologies of representations are codified. B - The critical study of the monuments as well as the consolidated tissue, the minor building fabrics and historical centres, considering the formal and stylistic aspects, the construction principals and the material usage (both in Liguria and in Genoa’s historical city centre, or in other Italian contexts). C – The reading of the urban and environmental transformations, by comparing the direct survey campaign with infographic sources or digital modelling and the historical iconographic literature obtained through a bibliographical research. D - The study of the architectural representation techniques and the survey procedures, through drawings illustrations and a precise literature review. E - The survey of historical facades and mural paintings, parts of the historical tissue as well as the minor building typologies, in different finishing: stone and bricks vestment or coating (plastic decoration), stucco, plasters and paintings. The study of the methodological problem related to survey and graphic restitutions, as a mean of direct knowledge for documentation is expressed at different scales of intervention (building, façade, details). Particularly in-depth studies are directed to the less explored field of finishing materials, colours, decorative particulars, in relation to the state of conservation and degradation of historical buildings. The necessity to define a particular survey approach linked to restoration practices in order to conserve a general environmental quality means to explore the perceptive and chromatic characteristics of materials, their physics and chemical composition. This in Liguria, especially in the case of mural paintings, represent a fundamental role for architectural connotation of the places. All these research experiences, especially around the issue of the mural paintings in the historical architecture, debated since the 80’s, are documented in the theoretical and scientific essays, presented during national and international conferences. About this last theme, it has been organized by the author symposium, exhibitions, official presentation to institutional and private stakeholders of the results obtained, to spread the awareness of the research importance and public engagement. 1 On all these issues, the author follows numerous Master graduation and PhD Thesis, in parallel to seminars and lectures in other Universities and with the occasion to develop applied studies in collaboration with public institutions and cultural heritage foundations.
