GSC NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS We take pride in our 35 National Team Championships 1971-2002 (35) in nine sports and the emphasis on academic success by our BASEBALL (4) coaches and student-athletes. Most recently, Christian Troy State (1986, 87) Brothers University captured the GSC’s first-ever Women’s Jacksonville State (1990, 91) Soccer Championship in the Fall of 2002. MEN’S BASKETBALL (3) Originally known as the Mid-South Conference, the GSC North Alabama (1979, 91) was formed by six universities in the summer of 1970: Delta Jacksonville State (1985) State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (7) State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Delta State (1975, 76, 77, 89, 90, 92) Troy State. Due to scheduling problems during the 1970-71 Southeastern Louisiana (1977*) academic year, the only league sport was football. FOOTBALL (8) Jacksonville State won the league’s first championship. Delta State (2000) In 1971, the league changed its name to the GULF North Alabama (1993, 94, 95) SOUTH CONFERENCE, added Southeastern Louisiana Troy State (1984, 87) (SELA) and Nicholls State (increasing the membership to West Alabama (1971) eight), and opened an office in Hammond, LA. The following Jacksonville State (1992) year, Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana MEN’S GOLF (4) (NWLA, now Northwestern State) were admitted. NELA Troy State (1976, 77, 84) withdrew to go Division I two years later, followed by SELA West Florida (2001) and Nicholls State in 1979. WOMEN’S GOLF (3) The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, Troy State (1984, 86, 89) when the presidents admitted Valdosta State. West Georgia WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS (2) joined in 1983. Eight years of stability ended in 1991 when Jacksonville State (1984, 85) Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly HOCKEY (2) dropping the GSC back to seven members, before the begin- Alabama-Huntsville (1996, 98) ning of an expansion resulting in ten new members: Lincoln WOMEN’S SOCCER (1) Memorial (1992-93); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Christian Brothers University (2002) Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women TRACK (1) (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Southeastern Louisiana (1975) Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Division I at the end of 1992-93. Current members in BOLD Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of * Small College Division Champion 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers University to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC GSC COMMISSIONERS 1971-Present welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist Stan Galloway (1971-1979) University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any Jim McCullough (1979-1982) level with 18 schools. Hayden Riley (1982-1984) Former Commissioner Jim McCullough moved the GSC Ralph McFillen (1984-1987) office to its present Birmingham location. The current Sonny Moran (1987-1992) Commissioner, Nathan (Nate) N. Salant, has been in office Nate Salant (1992-Present)
