Ivan Turgenev. TURGENEV " CHAPTER I CHILDHOOD is only too often a bondage which is never explained; but the child- hood of genius, a martyrdom though it may be, not infrequently finds eventual ex- pression. This interpretation, however, of the vague years with their formless misgivings and regrets, their unreasoned revolts, their gasps of antipathy and thankfulness—all this is usually toned down delicately in a mirage of memory in which resentment escapes in a half-whimsical sigh or a smile of forgiving irony. But in some very rare instances the dreams of early youth penetrate into the world of art without any such softening process of memory. One of these exceptional cases is the childhood of Ivan Tur- genev. -

THE MOVING PICTURE WORLD Goes to It 3 Subscribers in Its Present Form As the Result 01 a Battle'^In the Direction of -Vhich This Journal .133 Had No Hand
3ULLSTIN SERVICE OF pVING PICTURE WORLD 516 Fifth Avenue, Ne.V York City Chalmers Publishing Ccnfipany — George Blaisdell, Editor Resume of Matter Submitted for Publication October 11 and IS AN INNOCENT BYSTANDER THE MOVING PICTURE WORLD goes to it 3 subscribers in its present form as the result 01 a battle'^in the direction of -vhich this journal .133 had no hand. It is not at odds vUth organized labor. It is a be- -i.ievor in trades unions. It is a believer in union contracts fairly made and entered upon «?ith intention of fulfillment. In the present instance the Moving Picture World has' been caught in a feud that for -some tiirs has been growing in intensity between the printing pressmen's and feeders' local unions and their interna- tional organizations. The latter have declared forfeited the charters of the two Ne^v York unions. The employing printers, in the belief that such action .vas necessary in the interest of assuring performance of contract, have sided with the international unions and declined to treat with outlawed locals. To give effect to tt'^ir decision they locked out the pressmen. t'lembers of the local typographical union, warned by their interna- tional president not to enter upon an unauthorized strike, resigned their situations. The printers ask for an increase of Sl^ a week and a decrease of four hours a week. The employers have conceded a raise cf $6 a week and offered to submit other claims to arbitration. Up to this /rriting the printers have refused this proposal. It should also be stated the pressmen are demanding the same increase as that asked by the printers. -
A History of the Croswell Opera House in Adrian, Michigan 1900- 1920
A HISTORY OF THE CROSWELL OPERA HOUSE IN ADRIAN, MICHIGAN 1900- 1920 Thesis for the Degree of M. A MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY STEPHEN FRANCIS KIERSEY 1977 ..... ..... 35m. 3 "."I’.$",‘I’;t§£ III III IIZIIIIIIII IIII IIII III III IIII I IIIxI ABSTRACT A HISTORY OF THE CROSUELL OPERA HOUSE IN ADRIAN, MICHIGAN 1900-1920 StepheniFrafigivaiersey At the turn of the century nearly every town and village in the state of Michigan possessed some type of public hall suitable for am- ateur or professional theatrical activity. More fortunate communities were able to support the construction and maintenance of an opera house wherein popular actors and actresses of the day appeared in melodramas, light opera, and the often repeated Uncle Tom's Cabin. Today, many of these buildings, if they have not already been torn down, stand empty and silent, ghostly remnants of an exciting and colorful period. Yet, very little historical research has been done to illuminate this aspect of Michigan's cultural heritage. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to provide an accurate history of the Croswell opera House in Adrian, Michigan from 1900 to 1920 and in so doing provide a heretofore neglected aspect of this the- atre's history. Secondly, it seemed important to examine previous his- tories of the early years of the Opera House in order>to'provide a basis for the present study and at the same time create a comprehensive pic- ture of the Croswell Opera HouSe and thus correct many of the miscon- ceptions which currently exist. And thirdly, an examination of dramatic trends and attitudes prevalent in Adrian as well as stage practice at the theatre are included to demonstrate how the Croswell was typical of its Period. -
