  • The Globalization of K-Pop: the Interplay of External and Internal Forces
THE GLOBALIZATION OF K-POP: THE INTERPLAY OF EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL FORCES Master Thesis presented by Hiu Yan Kong Furtwangen University MBA WS14/16 Matriculation Number 249536 May, 2016 Sworn Statement I hereby solemnly declare on my oath that the work presented has been carried out by me alone without any form of illicit assistance. All sources used have been fully quoted. (Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological.

March ’77 DRAGON RUMBLES The eastern portion of the US is not the only area of the country to have suffered a blizzard this winter, though mine has been of a dif- ferent nature. A month or two ago, I placed a listing in WRITER‘S DIGEST, as a market for science fiction, fantasy and swords & sorcery. Within two weeks of that appearance, I have been inundated with a barrage of inquiries and unsolicited manuscripts, most of which aren’t right for these pages. But I’m reading, or having them read by Gary Jaquet , who has become my voluntary associate (meaning unpaid), every single one. What this means to all of the writers that have sent me submissions is that you should expect a response, but not soon. I have extended invitations to a number of authors of fantasy and science fiction games, other than D&D and EPT, to write on their creations for these pages. While we recognize that D&D started the fan- tasy gaming genre, there are now a number of science fiction and fan- tasy games available that we feel should be treated in this magazine. I extend this invitation to non-authors (of games) to do this also. I’m looking for articles on STELLAR CONQUEST, THE YTHRI, WBRM, GODSFIRE, STARSHIP TROOPERS, OUTREACH, Contents SORCERER, STARSOLDIER, GREEN PLANET TRILOGY, Witchcraft Supplement for D&D. ............................ 4 OGRE, MONSTERS-MONSTERS, VENERABLE DESTRUCTION More on METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA ....................... 10 and others. Interview with Robert “Bob” Money Sault St. Marie, MI May 26th, 2009 START OF INTERVIEW Josh McDowell (JMD): Josh McDowell interviewing Robert Money May 26th 2009 Sault St. Marie Michigan. Bob can you tell me a little bit about yourself, you’re date of birth and where you grew up or where you were born. Robert Money (RM): Well, I was born in 1930 in Madison, Indiana. The reason I’m involved in this is, we moved to Marquette in 1947 and my dad was the coach at Northern, Northern Michigan College of Education at the time and I finished high school there and all four years of college. I started college in 1949, graduated in 53 and immediately went into the service, like most of my classmates at that time. So, I was involved with the college, actually. I went to John D. Pierce, which was the college training school so I actually was involved in the college area for the six years after that. We moved away got married and have not lived in the Marquette area since that time. My parents did until my dad died and later my mother moved over here and lived with us until she died. JD: Can you explain the John D. Pierce, what branch of the college was that? RM: Well, years ago all of the state colleges that specialized in education, that would have been Western and central, eastern and Northern and well, even the big schools Michigan and Michigan state, they aren’t their own school systems k-12 and these were, see originally they did not farm teachers out to the public schools system, so what happened was they met, ran these schools and they were very high class schools, it really outside of a private education, you couldn’t have gotten a better education and in fact some of them like, University High in Ann Arbor used to do very well in state athletics , but anyway I went to John D.

  • Conceptually Androgynous
Umeå Center for Gender Studies Conceptually androgynous The production and commodification of gender in Korean pop music Petter Almqvist-Ingersoll Master Thesis in Gender Studies Spring 2019 Thesis supervisor: Johanna Overud, Ph. D. ABSTRACT Stemming from a recent surge in articles related to Korean masculinities, and based in a feminist and queer Marxist theoretical framework, this paper asks how gender, with a specific focus on what is referred to as soft masculinity, is constructed through K-pop performances, as well as what power structures are in play. By reading studies on pan-Asian masculinities and gender performativity - taking into account such factors as talnori and kkonminam, and investigating conceptual terms flower boy, aegyo, and girl crush - it forms a baseline for a qualitative research project. By conducting qualitative interviews with Swedish K-pop fans and performing semiotic analysis of K-pop music videos, the thesis finds that although K-pop masculinities are perceived as feminine to a foreign audience, they are still heavily rooted in a heteronormative framework. Furthermore, in investigating the production of gender performativity in K-pop, it finds that neoliberal commercialism holds an assertive grip over these productions and are thus able to dictate ‘conceptualizations’ of gender and project identities that are specifically tailored to attract certain audiences. Lastly, the study shows that these practices are sold under an umbrella of ‘loyalty’ in which fans are incentivized to consume in order to show support for their idols – in which the concept of desire plays a significant role. Keywords: Gender, masculinity, commercialism, queer, Marxism Contents Acknowledgments ................................................................................................................................... 1 INTRODUCTION .................................................................................................................................
