Lake County has Midwest League • Overall had four of its 10 scheduled home dates either suspended (one) or postponed (three) by weather. Today will be the Captains’ first doubleheader of the season. Eastern Division W L GB MONDAY: The Captains beat the West Michigan Whitecaps on a walk-off passed ball, 2-1. Trailing 1-0 in the West Michigan (Tigers) 11 4 -- ninth, the Captains came back and tied the score on an RBI double by Tyler Friis. With one out and runners on second and third, the Whitecaps intentionally walked Ernie Clement to load the bases for Nolan Jones. On the Lansing (Blue Jays) 11 6 1.0 first pitch of the at-bat, however, catcher Joey Morgan let John Hayes’ pitch tip off his glove and skip to the third Dayton (Reds) 9 7 2.5 base dugout. Todd Isaacs scored the game-winning run. Captains starter Juan Hillman pitched five strong innings, allowing one unearned run on one hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Gregori Vasquez earned the Bowling Green (Rays) 10 9 3.0 win, tossing four shutout innings with just two hits, one walk and five strikeouts. The left- hander surrendered six hits and allowed three runs. The Captains, however, defeated the Lugnuts thanks to four unearned runs. Lansing shortstop Kevin Vicuna committed four errors and the Captains won, 4-3. LAST SEASON: Perez posted another strong season, as he made his debut in the Short-Season New York- Penn League. The lefty posted a 3.28 ERA and finished among the league’s 10 best in ground ball percentage (52.7%) and BABIP (.263). IN THE PARK: Perez gave up just one home run in his first two years of professional baseball. Over 114.1 innings in the Dominican Summer League and the Arizona League, the only man to homer off of Perez was Dodgers prospect Jeffrey Souffront on August 11, 2016. Perez surrendered five home runs last year with Mahoning Valley. GROUND BALL PITCHER: Perez turned in the ninth-highest ground ball rate in the New York-Penn League last year (52.7%) Perhaps as a result of this high GB%, Perez allowed the fifth-lowest batting average on balls in play (BABIP) in the league (.263). AZL STAR: Led the AZL in innings (63.2), strikeouts (52) and was T-1st in wins (5) in 2016, en route to being named a Postseason All-Star OVER ACHIEVER: Perez has outperformed his FIP each of the first three years of his career. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).
