Su uso etnobotánico ha ayudado a sustentar numerosos pueblos. Hoy, unos 40 géneros de Asteráceas son relevantes en alimentación humana y animal, fuentes de aceites fijos, aceites esenciales, forraje, miel y polen, edulcorantes, especias, colorantes, insecticidas, caucho, madera, leña o celulosa. -

ISSN: 0975-8585 Research Journal of Pharmaceutical, Biological and Chemical Sciences Inhibition of Ehrlich’s Ascites Carcinoma by the Leaf Extracts of Eupatorium ayapana in Swiss Albino Mice. Madhubanti Bepari, Pralay Maity, and Sujata Maiti Choudhury* Department of Human Physiology with Community Health, Vidyasagar University, Midnapore-721102, West Bengal, India. ABSTRACT Eupatorium ayapana, belonging to the family Asteraceae, is therapeutically used as an antiseptic, antidysenteric, antibacterial and haematostatic agent. The objective of the present study is to explore the antitumour activity of the ethanolic and water extracts of the Eupatorium ayapana in Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma (EAC) bearing Swiss albino mice. To evaluate the antitumour activity, ethanolic and water extracts of E. ayapana were administered at the dose level of 150 mg/kg body weight intraperitonally for 14 consecutive days using 5-flurouracil as standard drug. After 24 h of the last dose, the antitumor effect of ethanolic and water extracts was assessed by evaluating tumor volume, viable cell count, increase in body weight, mean survival time and hematological parameters of the EAC bearing host. Both extracts caused significant decrease in tumor volume, viable tumor cell count, body weight and elevated the life span of EAC tumor bearing mice. Haematological profiles such as red blood cell (RBC), haemoglobin, and white blood cell (WBC) count restored more or less to normal level in extract-treated mice. The results demonstrated that the both extracts at 150 mg/kg body weight have potent antitumour activity and ethanolic extract is comparatively more potent than the water extract. Bhakat Ecology and Taxonomy Laboratory, Department of Botany and Forestry, Vidyasagar University, West Bengal, India Date Received: 29-09-2019 Date Accepted: 28-06-2020 Abstract Sacred groves are distinctive examples of biotic components as genetic resources being preserved in situ and serve as secure heavens for many endangered and endemic taxa. From this point of view, the biological spectrum, leaf spectrum and conservation status of the current sacred grove vegetation, SBT (Swarga Bauri Than) in Jhargram district of West Bengal, India, have been studied. The area's floristic study revealed that SBT‟s angiosperms were varied and consisted of 307 species belonging to 249 genera, distributed under 79 families of 36 orders as per APG IV. Fabales (12.05%) and Fabaceae (11.73%) are the dominant order and family in terms of species wealth. Biological spectrum indicates that the region enjoys “thero-chamae-cryptophytic” type of phytoclimate. With respect to the spectrum of the leaf size, mesophyll (14.05%) was found to be high followed by notophyll (7.84%), microphyll (7.19%), macrophyll (7.84%), nanophyll (6.86%), leptophyll (6.21%), and megaphyll (2.29%). The study area, being a sacred grove, it has a comparatively undisturbed status, and the protection of germplasm in the grove is based on traditional belief in the social system. -

Received 30 November, 2016; Accepted 6 January, 2017 In recent years, the number of infectious diseases linked to the occurrence of bacterial and fungal resistance has increased, leading to extensive search for new drugs to treat these infections. Species of the Asteraceae family and the genus Eupatorium, have high biological potential and are used in folk medicine to treat various diseases. This review article presents the main phytochemical and biological characteristics of the Asteraceae family and the genus Eupatorium s.l., whose antimicrobial activity is promising, especially antibacterial and antifungal activity. The current review was achieved using an organized search of the scientific data published on antimicrobial activity and phytochemical of the species of the genus Eupatorium using various databases, including PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Scielo, SciFinder and Google Scholar. The species of Eupatorium are rich in terpenes, phytosterols and sesquiterpene lactones, the latter being chemotaxonomic markers of the group, with broad anticancer, antiplasmodial and antimicrobial activity, making them promising for the development of new drugs. -

Plants were collected from home gardens, forests, wasteland, shrubbery and other places of ecological importance in the study sites. It covers phenology of plants and plantation treatment of propagules during nursery preparations. It would help the researchers better to use this work as a model to generate data from natural sites to plan the habitat management and to generate conservation strategies. It would help the environmentalists to conserve species in near future by formulating model for eco-sustenance of species as well as for the habitat conservation in other places. INTRODUCTION Medicinal plants are just like other general plants though their uses are known by people, as people handling these since dates back and uses were traditional. Now the research and inventions indicating the active principles of the medicinal plants and the efficacy through applied field. Till date, the local medicine men and herbalists use these plants for medicinal purposes but the compensation and dose of the plant parts are different even the application time and dose vary from site to site. -
