Tony Clark Executive Director, Major League Baseball Players Association Tony Clark, 48, is the first former player to serve as Executive Director of the Major League Baseball Players Association, overseeing all aspects of the union’s operations, including contract administration, grievance arbitration, and pension and health care matters. Following a 15-year playing career, Clark joined the MLBPA as director of player relations in March 2010, leading the union’s efforts to expand and improve the areas of membership communications and education. He was named deputy executive director in July 2013 and became executive director in December 2013. Clark retired from his playing career in 2009, after spending 15 seasons with the Detroit Tigers, Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Mets, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and San Diego Padres. The second overall draft pick in 1990, Clark made his Major League debut with the Tigers in September 1995 and finished third in Rookie of the Year balloting the following season. A first baseman, he played in 1,559 games, appeared in the 2001 All-Star Game and finished his career with 1,188 hits, 251 home runs and 824 RBIs. After attending his first Executive Board Meeting in 1999, Clark became active in union affairs. He became a player rep and during his final seven seasons served as an Association Representative, the union’s most senior leadership position. As a player, Clark was actively involved in collective bargaining in 2002 and 2006, as well in negotiations over the Joint Drug Agreement. Clark was born in Newton, Kansas, and raised in San Diego, California. .

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 22, 2011 MLB, MLBPA REACH NEW FIVE-YEAR LABOR AGREEMENT Major League Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig and Major League Baseball Players Association Executive Director Michael Weiner announced today that MLB and the MLBPA have agreed to a five-year collective bargaining agreement that will allow play to continue uninterrupted through the 2016 season. The announcement was made today at a joint press conference at Major League Baseball’s offices in New York City. Commissioner Selig and Weiner were joined at the press conference by Rob Manfred, MLB’s Executive Vice President, Labor Relations and Human Resource; Tony Clark, Director of Player Relations for the MLBPA; and Major League players Andrew Bailey of the Oakland Athletics, free agent David Bush, Andrew Miller of the Boston Red Sox, and Carlos Villanueva of the Toronto Blue Jays. The five-year agreement matches the previous labor contract, which is to expire on December 11, 2011, as the longest in baseball history. The Boston Red Sox Friday, April 3, 2020 * The Boston Globe Here are the best ballplayers I’ve covered, position by position Peter Abraham My first game as a beat writer was Aug. 6, 2002. The New York Mets played the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park and I was there working for the Journal News, a newspaper based in White Plains, N.Y. Two future Hall of Famers, Roberto Alomar and Mike Piazza, were in the lineup for the Mets that night. With Alomar on first base, Piazza homered off Ben Sheets in the top of the first inning and the Mets went on to win the game, 5-1. Looking up that box score led to this thought: Who are the best players I’ve covered in 18 years on the baseball beat? I had the Mets from 2002-05, the Yankees from 2006-09, and the Red Sox since 2010. For the purposes of this list, only players from those teams are eligible, and it’s based on how they played at the time I was covering the team. Here is my list: First base Mark Teixeira I covered one year of Mo Vaughn with the Mets when he was still good, and that was a lot of fun. But Teixeira had a .948 OPS for the Yankees in 2009 and finished second in the MVP voting for a World Series champion. He also won a Gold Glove. Mike Napoli had an outstanding 2013 season for the Sox. Adrian Gonzalez hit .321 with an .895 OPS in two seasons with the Sox.

Weisberg For Larry Lucchino, watching his Red Sox play a ballgame in Fenway Park is like a full day—work, recreation, socializing, meals—compressed into three hours and punctuated by the crack of the bat and the passions of the fans. His luxury box, hanging thirty feet above the field, is a mix of board room, living room, and dining room—all with a view of the action. On September 17, the Sox are playing the Cleveland Indians in a night game. Lucchino confers with the principle owner of the team, John Henry, and the team’s chairman, Thomas Werner, at the table, and they all keep track of the game by glancing at the version projected on the TV—or by glancing out the window. Then Lucchino gets up and walks to the balcony, which suspends three rows of seats out almost directly over the grass, just on the third base side of home plate. If there’s a best seat in the house, it’s in this patch of real estate. But Lucchino kneels in the aisle to chat with his wife, keeping one eye on the game. At the moment, the Red Sox have men on first and second. Benny Agbayani pulls a line drive just fair over third base. “Yes! That’s a hit!” Lucchino calls and swings his fist in an arc, one version of the simultaneous celebration of about thirty thousand fans, as the Sox score the first run of the game. ➤ LARRY LUCCHINO: IT DOESN’T GET BETTER THAN THIS In the late months of 2001, Larry Lucchino ’71 joined a group that won the bidding battle for the Boston Red Sox.
