We have a record 95 walks over each night! the 9 days and I am sure you’ll find something to interest you. Please book via the website, it is quick and easy to use and ensures your booking is confirmed. When booking, you will be asked if you would like to make a donation to South and Mid-Wales Cave Rescue Team. This may seem an odd charity for us to support, but they provide specialist support to our Mountain Rescue Teams, so please support them generously! Whether this is your first or eleventh festival, the CWF team are looking forward to welcoming you to our lovely area and showing you what it has to offer. CLOTHING AND FOOD At this time of year, appropriate clothing is required at all times: • Walking Boots (not trainers) • Spare warm clothing eg a jacket or fleece • Hat • Waterproof jacket and trousers • Gloves • Food and a (hot) drink • Warm clothing • Rucksack Note: Jeans are not acceptable, as they can act as a refrigerator when wet and contribute to hypothermia. Starting times and places Instructions on how to get to the start points of all walks are included on the website. Please allow enough time to get to the start AND get prepared as the start times indicated are the time we need to commence the walk. It is unfair on other walkers to keep them waiting. BE PREPARED! Craft activities in Clarence Hall for families and children from 3pm WALK 1 GOSPEL PASS TO CRICKHOWELL Saturday 24th February A superb ridge walk taking in almost the entire length of the Black Mountains, from Gospel Pass in Meeting Point: CRiC for bus to start the north back to Crickhowell in the south. From Gospel Pass climb Twmpa and then continue via Time: 8:30am to 5pm Waun Fach (the highest point in the Black Mountains at 811m), Pen Allt-mawr and Pen Cerrig-calch Distance: 14 miles before descending into Crickhowell via Table Mountain. Ascent: 2100ft Leader: Huw Dullea Price: £12.50 (Incl £4 bus fare) Sponsored by: Treads and Trails WALK 2 THE LLANBEDR HORSESHOE Saturday 24th February A superb challenge walk along two of the Black Mountain ridges high above the Grwyne Fechan valley. A stiff ascent at the start, then striding out along the tops for most the day with wonderful Meeting Point: CRiC for bus to start views. Starting from Llanbedr village hall ascend up to Crug Mawr. Follow the top up to Pen Twyn Time: 8:30am to 5pm Mawr, Pen y Gadair Fawr eventually reaching Waun Fach. Up again to the top of Pen Allt-mawr and Distance: 18 miles onto the top of Pen Cerrig-calch. From here it’s a descent to Table Mountain and then back into Ascent: 3300ft Crickhowell. Leader: Kerry Crosfield Price: £12.50 (Incl £4 bus fare) Sponsored by: Crosfield Outdoors WALK 3 BEACONS WAY - LLANGYNIDR TO CRICKHOWELL Saturday 24th February Following the Beacons Way, the first section of the walk is along the road, across the ancient and historic Llangynidr Bridge and through fields to Bwlch, then a steady climb up Cefn Moel, with Meeting Point: CRiC for bus to start beautiful views east and south-west. Next, descend steeply into the ‘Hidden Valley’ and to Cwmdu, Time: 9am to 4:30pm before another climb to contour around the base of Pen Cerrig-calch. This attractive path affords great Distance: 13 miles views of the Usk Valley. Then down past the deserted village of Twyn through fields to Crickhowell. Ascent: 2400ft Leader: Simon Foster Price: £12.50 (Incl £4 bus fare) WALK 4 PEN Allt RIDGE Saturday 24th February Climb the stunning Dragon’s Back and the reward is a high ridge to follow all the way to Crickhowell! Meeting Point: CRiC for bus to start A linear walk from Pengenffordd up the Dragon’s Back to the shoulder of Waun Fach. We then follow Time: 9am to 5pm the ridge via Pen Trumau, Mynydd Llysiau, Pen Allt-mawr and Pen Cerrig-calch, before descending Distance: 13 miles via Table Mountain to Crickhowell. Part of Crickhowell Walking Fes�val 6 You must wear appropriate clothing - check p3 WALK 5 SUGAR LOAF - A SCENIC CIRCUIT FROM CRICKHOWELL A circular walk from Crickhowell to the top of Sugar Loaf (596m) and returning via Llangenny. The Saturday 24th February walk follows the River Usk downstream, across fields then up and over Rheld wood and down to Meeting Point: CRiC Millbrook Bridge. We walk along quiet roads leading steeply up to Cwm Gwenffrwd and a good Time: 9:30am to 4:30pm moorland path up to the Sugar Loaf summit. We descend the western ridge to the pretty Grwyne Fawr Distance: 11 miles river and Llangenny village. A short steep hill takes us up to fields and back to Crickhowell. We start with a fairly steep climb from the A40 Meeting Point: CRiC up past the Darren onto a limestone plateau with three prominent points - Pen Gloch-y-pibwr, Pen Time: 10:30am to 4:30pm Allt-mawr and Pen Cerrig-calch, the three Pens - and then descend to Crug Hywel - Table Mountain Distance: 10 miles - and back down to Crickhowell.

Participants are reminded that the following gear must be taken. Walking boots, rucksack, hats, gloves, warm clothing (not jeans), spare fleece, water and a hot drink, lunch, extra food and of course waterproof jackets and trousers. A whistle and a head torch (with spare batteries) should be carried, particularly during the winter months, and a hi- visibility garment would be very useful in case of poor visibility. Participants must satisfy themselves that the walk is suitable for their abilities. You can take advice by ringing the walk leader whose telephone number is given. No liability will be accepted for loss or injury that occurs because of taking part. An adult must accompany young people (under 18). MOST OF THESE WALKS ARE FOR EXPERIENCED WALKERS - IF YOU’RE NOT SURE OF YOUR ABILITY WHY NOT START OFF WITH A MODERATE WALK TO FIND OUT? Please check the guided walks programme on the website for planned cancellations and changes to walks.     S T R A Y S Volume One: !'IARRIAGES Introduction This volume of 'stray' marriages is published with the hope that it will prove of some value as an additional source for the familv historian. For economic reasons, the 9rooms' names only are listed. Often people married many miles from their own parishes and sometimes also away from the parish of the spouse. Tracking down such a 'stray marriage' can involve fruitless and dishearteninq searches and may halt progress for many years. - Included here are 'strays', who were married in another parish within the county of Powys, or in another county. There are also a few non-Powys 'strays' from adjoining counties, particularly some which may be connected with Powys families. For those researchers puzzled and confused by the thought of dealing with patronymics, when looking for their Welsh ancestors, a few are to be found here and are ' indicated by an asterisk. A simple study of these few examples may help in a search for others, although it must be said, that this is not so easy when the father's name is not given. I would like to thank all those members who have helped in anyway with the compilation of this booklet. A second collection is already in progress; please· send any contributions to me.     The Search for San Ffraid ‘A thesis submitted to the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in the fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts’ 2012 Jeanne Mehan 1 Abstract The Welsh traditions related to San Ffraid, called in Ireland and Scotland St Brigid (also called Bride, Ffraid, Bhríde, Bridget, and Birgitta) have not previously been documented. This Irish saint is said to have traveled to Wales, but the Welsh evidence comprises a single fifteenth-century Welsh poem by Iorwerth Fynglwyd; numerous geographical dedications, including nearly two dozen churches; and references in the arts, literature, and histories. This dissertation for the first time gathers together in one place the Welsh traditions related to San Ffraid, integrating the separate pieces to reveal a more focused image of a saint of obvious importance in Wales.
