RSPB Croydon Local Group Programme 2016 RSPB Croydon Local Group Programme 2016 Indoor Meetings & Events Our monthly meetings are open to everyone, not just RSPB members. Admission: £4.00 (includes tea/coffee). They are held at Whitgift Sports Club, The Clubhouse, Croham Manor Road, South Croydon, CR2 7BG between 2pm-4pm and again between 8pm-10pm. 9th May 2016 - “The Science and Beauty of Birds”. Ever wondered why a raptor has an orbital ridge or what the purpose is of a tubenose on a petrel? In this talk, Oliver Smart guides us through some fascinating insights into the science of birds, their adaptations, evolution and physiology. 11th July 2016 - “Japanese Adventure”. So good was the feedback from members following Jenny Hibbert’s inaugural talk to the group in 2015 that we have taken up her offer to hear about her travels through Japan.     Coarse fishing close season on English rivers Appendix 1 – Current coarse fish close season arrangements The close season on different waters In England, there is a coarse fish close season on all rivers, some canals and some stillwaters. This has not always been the case. In the 1990s, only around 60% of the canal network had a close season and in some regions, the close season had been dispensed with on all stillwaters. Stillwaters In 1995, following consultation, government confirmed a national byelaw which retained the coarse fish close season on rivers, streams, drains and canals, but dispensed with it on most stillwaters. The rationale was twofold: • Most stillwaters are discrete waterbodies in single ownership. Fishery owners can apply bespoke angling restrictions to protect their stocks, including non-statutory close times. • The close season had been dispensed with on many stillwaters prior to 1995 without apparent detriment to those fisheries. This presented strong evidence in favour of removing it. The close season is retained on some Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads, as a precaution against possible damage to sensitive wildlife - see Appendix 1. This consultation is not seeking views on whether the close season should be retained on these stillwaters While most stillwater fishery managers have not re-imposed their own close season rules, some have, either adopting the same dates as apply to rivers or tailoring them to their waters' specific needs. Canals The Environment Agency commissioned a research project in 1997 to examine the evidence around the close season on canals to identify whether or not angling during the close season was detrimental to canal fisheries.

  • 8. Strategic Sites
    8. STRATEGIC SITES Introduction 8.1 This chapter sets out the policies for the strategic sites within the National Park. These sites represent one-off opportunities for developments of exceptional quality. They have the potential to make a substantial contribution towards sustainable growth and deliver multiple ecosystems services, which in turn promotes the National Park’s purposes and helps to achieve the vision set out in this Plan. The strategic sites are: Shoreham Cement Works, Upper Beading; and North Street Quarter and adjacent East gate area, Lewes. 8.2 Whilst the former ‘Syngenta’ site in Fernhurst is also a strategic site, it has already been allocated for a sustainable mixed-use development incorporating residential (approximately 200 homes), commercial development and other suitable uses in the Fernhurst Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP), which was made in 2016. 8.3 This chapter identifies how the strategic sites can collectively and individually contribute to meeting the National Park’s purposes, and how their development could be justified by exceptional circumstances and be in the public interest, in accordance with Policy SD3: Major Development in the South Downs National Park. 8.4 There are also three strategic housing allocations, these are set out with all the other allocations in Chapter 10. Land at Old Malling Farm in Lewes (Allocation Policy SD77) is a greenfield site that will make a significant contribution to meeting the unmet housing need of Lewes and was originally allocated in the Lewes Joint Core Strategy. The Depot / Brickworks site and former Holmbush Caravan Park, both located in Midhurst and both brownfield sites, will contribute significantly to the unmet housing need of Midhurst.

    Habitats Regulations Assessment Screening Statement Amberley Neighbourhood Development Plan December 2016 1. Introduction 1.1 The purpose of this screening statement is to provide a screening opinion as to whether there might be any potential likely significant effects on internationally important wildlife sites (also known as European sites) that may be affected by the Amberley Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP), and therefore whether further Habitats Regulations Assessment work is required. Habitats Regulations Assessment Screening 1.2 Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA) refers to the requirement for any plan or project to assess the potential implications for European sites. The need for HRA is set out within the EC Habitats Directive 92/43/EC which is transposed into British Law. Article 6(3) of the EU Habitats Directive provides that: “Any plan or project not directly connected with or necessary to the management of the [European] site but likely to have a significant effect thereon, either individually or in combination with other plans or projects, shall be subject to appropriate assessment of its implications for the site in view of the site's conservation objectives. In the light of the conclusions of the assessment of the implications for the site and subject to the provisions of paragraph 4, the competent national authorities shall agree to the plan or project only after having ascertained that it will not adversely affect the integrity of the site concerned and, if appropriate, after having obtained the opinion of the general public.” 1.3 The first stage of the HRA process involves an assessment or screening of whether the plan is likely to have a significant effect on one or more European sites either alone or in combination.

    RSPB Croydon Local Group Programme - 2017 Indoor Meetings Our monthly meetings are open to everyone, not just RSPB members. Admission: £4.00 (includes tea/coffee). They are held at Whitgift Sports Club, The Clubhouse, Croham Manor Road, South Croydon, CR2 7BG between 2pm-4pm and again between 8pm-10pm. 8th May 2017 - “Reserved for Birds”. We welcome back Brian Nobbs, of the Sevenoaks Local Group, who has entertained us in the past. Today he takes us on a trip around various RSPB reserves in Scotland, Wales and England. Each requires a different management regime to maintain habitat and the RSPB works in conjunction with other organisations to make the most of the land its manage. Brian will give us his personal insight into such important work. 10th July 2017 - “Gardening with Wildlife” by Adrian Thomas. In 2010 Adrian wrote “Gardening for Wildlife” as part of the RSPB book range. There is something uplifting about having butterflies in your flowerbeds, frogs in your water feature and birds in your bushes, knowing that they're here because of you. He busts the myth that wildlife gardens have to be 'wild'. If you love wildlife this talk will help you sow the seeds and reap the rewards. We meet here Buses 64 and 433 stop in Croham Road 14th August 2017 - General Meeting (afternoon) and AGM (evening). These will be accompanied by a talk from the environment committee. 11th September 2017 - “Footloose in Namibia”. It helps to have an expert in your midst.
