We are OLLI. We are your friends and neighbors, and we want to stay vital as we reach and enjoy retirement. One way to do that is to keep learning, so we’ve joined the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Bradley University – OLLI.

OLLI at Bradley has nearly 900 Peoria-area members from age 50 to 98 who come from all backgrounds and educational levels. Together we enjoy the camaraderie of our peers as we participate in a myriad of educational events designed just for us. The relaxed and friendly atmosphere of OLLI only adds to our experiences. It’s learning our way!

OLLI offers several programs: Learning Trips, Study Groups, Classes, Special Events, Sunday Cinema, and Lectures. You’ll find each of them described in this brochure.

WE ARE OLLI!

OLLI volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization. We celebrate our success due to their efforts. Thank you!

Bernie Drake, OLLI member and instructor, on a recent trip met some Lifelong Learning people from another university. Bernie learned that the curriculum for the other school was developed by one person, and that the course offering was, understandably, modest. Compare that to our OLLI at Bradley, where 41 people participated in developing the curriculum for 61 fall classes, all taught by volunteers. We have a true volunteer-driven program, with support from a dedicated staff. Bob Beckenbaugh, Curriculum Committee Chair, did a great job. When you see Bob, give him a big Thank You. Shirley Streib is in charge of Winter classes January 8 through January 11, 2013. She’s already had curriculum planning meetings with excellent participation from OLLI volunteers. Shirley is shooting for another record attendance at the Winter 2013. Did you ever wonder where Learning Trip ideas come from? I’m constantly amazed because there are so many interesting places – like Fulton, Illinois, for example. I’d never heard of the town, and yet it was a transportation hub and now sports an authentic Dutch windmill. The ideas, of course, come from OLLI volunteers. Wayne Goetz (pronounced gates, as in Bill Gates) now chairs the Learning Trips Committee. The group will be planning trips for Spring 2013 on September 28 at 9 a.m. in the Executive Suite of the Michel Student Center. Mark your calendar! Everyone is welcome. That same day, September 28, the Lectures Committee will meet at 11 a.m. in the Executive Suite. You can help plan Learning Trips, and stick around to help Don Wagner plan Lectures for the coming year. Don has an excellent committee, but he would like more input from OLLI members. We’ve had some great Lectures so far (e.g., Jim Owens of Caterpillar and Chris Johnson who shook us up with his inspirational and funny program on nutrition and exercise), but Don is eager to move forward with bigger and better programs. Four years ago Sandy Stemler launched our Study Groups Committee. Now it’s in the able hands of Carol May. Study Groups are classes usually requiring participation by attendees. They can meet at any time during the day, any day of the week, and usually are an hour and a half long. Some of them meet for four sessions, some for as many as eight. Some people, like Rich Buck, focus only on Study Groups because they want the more participative learning experience. Study Groups also help us reach out to the community. We’ve had Study Groups on the Bradley campus, but also at Lutheran Hillside Village, Proctor Endowment Home, Riverview Retirement Community in East Peoria, Methodist North, and the Peoria NEXT Innovation Center. Carol would like more volunteer involvement in coming up with subjects and facilitators. She has meetings scheduled for July 26, October 4, October 11, and October 18, all at 2 p.m. at Peoria NEXT Innovation Center on Main Street. Come join Carol! (Carol is also the workhorse behind our new program of Sunday afternoon movies, Sunday Cinema. Check it out on page 12.) Working in the background are even more OLLI volunteers: Larry Trollope will be assisted by Cornell Carr in making sure the buses stay on schedule. Kathie Bartolo and Greg Peine organize art exhibits at each OLLI class day in October. Mary Ellen and Bill Krum coordinate hosts for each of the classes. Karen Bradberry and her committee will select the menu and handle table decorations for our opening luncheon. Joanne Haupt and her committee will choose our member- ship gifts. Lastly, my fellow officers will be working hard on your behalf. Sharon Lansdowne serves as vice president this year. Mary Ellen Krum is our new secretary, and Ralph Dalton is treasurer. Can you imagine one or two people trying to do all this on their own? Or how many Bradley staff people we would need to get all the jobs done? Wow! What a great organization we have! Make it even greater by contributing your time, ideas, and talent.
