Tovar cur- 2021 1-1 rently leads the Low-A West in hits (46), is second in total bases (78), is tied for third in RBI (30) and fourth in runs with 28. Tovar leads the Grizzlies at Fresno 1-1 with six homers, 30 RBI, 11 multi-hit games and eight multi-RBI games. HOW HE DREW IT UP: Last night, Rockies #10 prospect Drew Romo went 3-for-3 and reached base four times against the Stockton Ports. The at Stockton 0-0 catcher ended the contest a triple shy of the cycle and scored three runs overall. His home run to right field in the fourth inning was the third of his professional career. Romo also threw out a baserunner at second from his knees. The catcher has caught 11 baserunners in 25 attempts (44%) this 6/15 vs Stockton W 14-3 season. RICO AT THE HELM: Rico Brogna is in his first season as the Ports skipper. Brogna played nine seasons in the major leagues with the Detroit 6/16 vs Stockton L 11-6 Tigers, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox, and Atlanta Braves organizations. Brogna was drafted in the first round (26th overall) by the Tigers in the 1988 MLB Draft. After his playing career, he spent one season as a minor league manager with the Arizona Diamondbacks, one 6/17 vs Stockton 6:50 pm season managing in the Philadelphia Phillies organization, and spent time in the front office with the Los Angeles Angels. RUNNING WILD: The Grizzlies currently lead the Low-A West in stolen bases with 72, eight more than the Lake Elsinore Storm. The Grizzlies have 6/18 vs Stockton 6:50 pm stolen 27 bases in 28 attempts in their last eight games. On June 9th against Modesto, Fresno swiped eight bags, a team season-high. Zac Veen leads the club with 20 stolen bases and Bladimir Restituyo is second with 13. 6/19 vs Stockton 6:50 pm ZAC ATTACK: Rockies top prospect Zac Veen has been a nightmare on the basepaths this season. The first round draft pick has swiped 20 bases in 26 attempts, which leads the Low-A West. Veen’s 20 stolen bases already passes Wilmer Difo, who led the Grizzlies in steals in 2019 (13). Veen’s 6/20 vs Stockton 5:05 pm 20 swipes would tie him for second (Kyle Tucker) among Grizzlies players if he was on the 2018 roster. He would only trail Myles Straw, who had 35 stolen bases. BREILING BRINGS IT: Lefty Breiling Eusebio has been outstanding this season for the Grizzlies. Over eight starts, Eusebio is 4-0 with a 1.87 ERA PORTS STAFF and 0.99 WHIP. The team is 7-1 when he pitches and half of those games have been quality starts for the Dominican native. In four of his past five starts, Eusebio has gone at least six innings and has struck out seven, both season-highs. Eusebio is expected to pitch this Saturday for Fresno. Manager: Rico Brogna COLLEGE WORLD SERIES: The College World Series starts this Saturday and one current Grizzly is keeping an eye on the results. Righty Keegan James will be watching his brother, Kamren and the Mississippi State Bulldogs battle their way to the ultimate college baseball goal. The younger 14-24 (.368) James is listed as a 6’2 infielder and looks to help the Bulldogs beat Texas in their opening game on Sunday at 7 pm. 1st season with Stockton NAIL BITERS FOR THE GRIZZ: 16 of the last 26 games for the Grizzlies have been one or two-run affairs (9-7). Overall, 23 of the first 38 games for Pitching Coach: Chris Smith Fresno have been decided by two runs or less. The Grizzlies are 14-9 in those contests with an 8-4 mark at home. • SF Giants Press Clips Friday, March 17, 2017
SF Giants Press Clips Friday, March 17, 2017 San Francisco Chronicle Giants’ Christian Arroyo: next piece of homegrown infield? John Shea SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Giants love shortstops. Theirs is one of the best in baseball, Brandon Crawford. Their second baseman was drafted as a shortstop and converted in the minors, Joe Panik. They drafted Matt Duffy as a shortstop and taught him to play third base as a big-leaguer. Last summer, they traded for Eduardo Nuñez, who had played mostly shortstop during his career but played third after Duffy was traded to Tampa Bay. Heck, even Buster Posey played shortstop in college. No wonder the Giants’ top hitting prospect is a shortstop. Not that Christian Arroyo is targeted to play the position in the big leagues, not with Mr. Crawford in the house. Arroyo, who’s 21 going on 30, is the team’s third baseman of the future, and we’re not talking the distant future. It’s not unrealistic to imagine Arroyo playing third on Opening Day in 2018, so long as he continues to excel on the fast track. 1 “For me, they stressed the value of versatility,” Arroyo said at his Scottsdale Stadium locker. “Staying versatile is going to be huge.” Arroyo was the Giants’ top draft pick in 2013 — he was salutatorian at Hernando High School in Brooksville, Fla. — and he signed after turning down a scholarship from Florida, where he would have studied architectural engineering. He’s plenty smart enough to realize his ticket to the big leagues might not be at his No.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings March 11, 2016 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1974-With Hank Aaron only needing one home run to tie Babe Ruth’s career record, Commission Bowie Kuhn requires the Braves to start Aaron in at least two of the team’s three season-opening games in Cincinnati MLB.COM Schebler stays hot, Reds rally for late victory By Doug Miller / MLB.com | March 10th, 2016 + 36 COMMENTS SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Nolan Arenado continued a torrid spring at the plate by hitting his first homer of the Cactus League season, but the Reds rallied for three runs in the ninth to beat the Rockies, 5-4, at Salt River Fields on Thursday. Colorado's All-Star third baseman went 2-for-3 to raise his spring batting average to .500 and took Cincinnati starter Brandon Finnegan deep in the third inning. "He's just really good," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of Arenado. "He made another unbelievable play to start a double play. We see it pretty much on a daily basis." However, down one run in the ninth, Reds third baseman Seth Mejias-Brean hit a two-run single and first baseman Brandon Allen delivered an RBI double to put Cincinnati on top. The Rockies cut the deficit to one run on Rafael Ynoa's sacrifice fly in the bottom half, but that was all they would get. Colorado took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Charlie Blackmon's RBI single before Arenado extended it to 2-0. That held up through the three-inning spring debut of Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa, who set down all nine batters he faced.
