The mouth of the Fortymile River where ground is marshy and the remains are fragile it empties into the Yukon River, 67 km so it recommended that visitors restrict their upstream from the Alaska/Yukon border activities to the Forty Mile townsite. and 88 km downriver from Dawson City. Predators assume, often correctly, that victims will keep their secrets. The “Unheard” project shattered that silence with a new kind of collaborative journalism rooted in trust and respect for 29 Alaskans who have stepped forward to share their stories. The series is a centerpiece of the ongoing investigation into sexual violence Alaska by ProPublica and the Anchorage Daily News. More than 200 people responded, most saying they would be willing to speak on the record to a reporter. Often, they told of being sexually abused as children and again and again throughout adulthood. When they reported the crimes, police sometimes failed to investigate or prosecutors declined to file charges.

INTRODUCTION The Parks Highway The George Parks Highway, usually simply called the Parks Highway, runs 323 miles from the Glenn Highway in the Matanuska Valley to Fairbanks in the Alaska Interior. Completed in 1971, the Parks Highway is one of the most important roads in Alaska. Linking the state’s two largest cities—Anchorage and Fairbanks—with spectacular natural surroundings and unparalleled recreation opportunities, this highway winds through the kind of scenery that typifies the Alaskan Interior: the continent’s highest peaks and largest glaciers, alpine tundra, taiga forests, wild rivers, and vast expanses inhabited only by wildlife. It is a common misconception that the name "Parks Highway" comes from the route's proximity to parklands. In fact, it is in honor of George Alexander Parks, governor of the Territory of Alaska from 1925 to 1933. However, the aptness of the name was recognized when it was chosen. The Parks Highway penetrates the wilderness of Interior Alaska, providing access to the region’s two largest protected areas: Denali National Park and Preserve and Denali State Park. At these two parks, travelers can indulge in myriad recreation activities during all seasons.

Identification of aufeis by late-spring Landsat images was performed with a semi- 14 automated approach according to Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI) and additional 15 data. After this, a cross-reference index was set for each aufeis, to link and compare historical 16 and satellite-based aufeis data sets. 17 The aufeis coverage varies from 0.26 to 1.15% in different sub-basins within the 18 Indigirka River watershed. The digitized historical archive (Cadastre, 1958) contains the 19 coordinates and characteristics of 896 aufeis with total area of 2064 km2. The Landsat-based 20 dataset included 1213 aufeis with a total area of 1287 km2. Accordingly, the satellite-derived 21 total aufeis area is 1.6 times less than the Cadastre (1958) dataset. However, more than 600 22 aufeis identified from Landsat images are missing in the Cadastre (1958) archive. It is 23 therefore possible that the conditions for aufeis formation may have changed from the mid- 24 20th century to the present.

A closer look at these management challenges and successes are detailed in the NHL case studies of Ladd Field and the Sitka Naval Operating Base and U.S. Army Coastal Defenses. keywords: cultural resources management, historic preservation assistance, federal partnerships INTRODUCTION Alaska’s national historic landmarks (NHLs) represent some of America’s most significant places. The stories as- sociated with these NHLs include information about an- cient hunting camps and villages, Russian exploration and settlements, Alaska Native education and civil rights or- ganizations, fur seal harvesting, mining and fish canning industries, and the World War II Aleutian battlegrounds. The 2005 designation of Amalik Bay Archeological District NHL (Fig. 1) within Katmai National Park and Preserve brings the total number of NHLs in Alaska to 49 (a list of Alaska NHLs is at http://www.nps.gov/akso/CR/ AKRCultural/NHL.htm).
