Tessel: Dispersal effects on species distribution and diversity across multiple scales in the southern Appalachian mixed mesophytic flora (Under the direction of Peter S. White) Seed and spore dispersal play important roles in the spatial distribution of plant species and communities. Though dispersal processes are often thought to be more important at larger spatial scales, the distribution patterns of species and plant communities even at small scales can be determined, at least in part, by dispersal. I studied the influence of dispersal in southern Appalachian mixed mesophytic forests by categorizing species by dispersal morphology and by using spatial pattern and habitat connectivity as predictors of species distribution and community composition. All vascular plant species were recorded at three nested sample scales (10000, 1000, and 100 m2), on plots with varying levels of habitat connectivity across the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Models predicting species distributions generally had higher predictive power when incorporating spatial pattern and connectivity, particularly at small scales. Despite wide variation in performance, models of locally dispersing species (species without adaptations to dispersal by wind or vertebrates) were most frequently improved by the addition of spatial predictors. -

VASCULAR FLORA OF THE UPPER ETOWAH RIVER WATERSHED, GEORGIA by LISA MARIE KRUSE (Under the Direction of DAVID E. GIANNASI) ABSTRACT The Etowah River Basin in North Georgia is a biologically diverse Southern Appalachian River system, threatened by regional population growth. This is a two-part botanical study in the Upper Etowah watershed. The primary component is a survey of vascular flora. Habitats include riparian zones, lowland forest, tributary drainages, bluffs, and uplands. A total of 662 taxa were inventoried, and seventeen reference communities were described and mapped. Small streams, remote public land, and forested private land are important for plant conservation in this watershed. In the second component, cumulative plant species richness was sampled across six floodplain sites to estimate optimal widths for riparian buffer zones. To include 90% of floodplain species in a buffer, 60-75% of the floodplain width must be protected, depending on the stream size. Soil moisture influences species richness, and is dependent on upland water sources. An optimal buffer would protect hydrologic connections between floodplains and uplands. [= RAB, F, G, K, W; = T. urticaefolia – S, orthographic variant] Triadica Loureiro 1790 (Chinese Tallow-tree) A genus of 2-3 species, native to tropical and subtropical Asia. The most recent monographers of Sapium and related genera (Kruijt 1996; Esser 2002) place our single naturalized species in the genus Triadica, native to Asia; Sapium (excluding Triadica) is a genus of 21 species restricted to the neotropics. This conclusion is corroborated by molecular phylogenetic analysis (Wurdack, Hoffmann, & Chase (2005). Triadica has become locally common from Colleton County, SC southward through the tidewater area of GA, and promises to become a serious weed tree (as it is in parts of LA, TX, and FL). Burkhart, Head, Dept. of Forestry December 16, 1997, Blacksburg, Virginia Characterization of Vascular Plant Species Composition and Relative Abundance in Southern Appalachian Mixed-Oak Forests by Daniel N. Hammond (Abstract) Eight study sites were established in mid-elevation, south aspect, mixed-oak forests in the Ridge and Valley and Allegheny Mountain physiographic provinces of Southwestern Virginia and West Virginia to address questions concerning the variability in species composition, richness, and relative abundance of vascular plant species in those communities. All forest strata were sampled using a nested plot design. Variability in species richness and species composition was found to be high. Total species richness values ranged from 84 to 273, and Sorrenson’s Coefficient of Similarity index values indicated that approximately 46, 38, and 51 percent of the species in the overstory, mid- story, and herb stratum were the same among sites, respectively. However, despite differences in composition and richness, K-S tests revealed significant differences in the distribution of ranked relative abundance only in the mid-story at two sites. Differences did occur in the relative abundance of twelve growth form categories. While tree seedlings and perennial herbs dominated, on average, woody vines and fern species represented substantial coverage on sites in the Allegheny Mountains. -

The Vascular Flora of Grassy Mountain
THE VASCULAR FLORA OF GRASSY MOUNTAIN, MURRAY COUNTY, GEORGIA by JENNIFER ALLISON MOORE (Under the direction of David Giannasi) ABSTRACT Grassy Mountain is a 1,125m summit in northern Georgia, located at the southwestern terminus of the Blue Ridge Province of the Appalachian Mountains. The vascular flora of Grassy Mountain was surveyed and collected during the growing seasons of 2000 and 2001 over an area of approximately 5,270 hectares. Voucher specimens documented the presence of 554 taxa, representing 548 species and 6 varieties, 327 genera and 116 families. Exotic species comprised 11% of the flora documented in this study. No endangered or threatened plant species were encountered, however 20 taxa were found that are listed as sensitive, locally rare, or of special concern by the U.S. Forest Service or Georgia Natural Heritage Program. Grassy Mountain harbors an intact example of a southern Appalachian cove forest containing a boulderfield, which is botanically and ecologically significant for its species richness, pristine quality, and location at the southwestern extent of these habitats.
