Social Data: The trick to getting people to do things for you in the real world is to take them out to lunch. We met together at Chen’s Noodle House, a Chinese restaurant in Orem, UT (the place was Dan Wells’ idea). There is an authentic Chinese theme in the restaurant, right down to statues, chopsticks, and Chinese ambiance music. There were other customers in the restaurant at the time (though not too many), as well as wait staff &c. Cultural Data: “TLE” is this generation’s acronym for The Leading Edge, as it was called at that time. Quark Xpress is an older design layout program that has since been replaced in the university curriculum by Adobe InDesign.

Letter from the Chair When you really consider the vast scope of what we set out to discuss here at LTU&E, the mind boggles. The purview of this symposium, now cele- brating its 29th year, encompasses every discipline to some degree. But who are we to feel that we can even begin to comprehend it all? Surely only folly or hubris would drive us to such an undertaking. Far be it, actually. When you work with science fiction and fantasy you push the limits of the imagination, you engage in thought experiments that probe the foundations of human experience, and you wrestle with life, the universe, and everything. That’s why, for nearly three decades, students and faculty have labored to bring together great minds to further serious academic discussion of specu- lative fiction—and have some fun while we’re at it, I hope. Whether you’re a professional or an amateur, a scholar or an enthusiast, a presenter or a participant, we’re glad you’re here. We can’t do this without the support of many people. Personally, I’d like to thank my fellow committee members, many of whom knew much more than I about organizing this event, and all of whom were invaluable to this effort. We’d like to thank our faculty advisor, Eric Fielding, for helping us over- come some tricky obstacles that arose while planning this year’s symposium. Thanks also to Steve Keele for a beautiful poster graphic and Jess Smart Smiley for the program book cover art. Letter from the Chair Welcome! We are now celebrating LTU&E’s twenty-eighth year. It’s exciting to participate in an event that has created a legacy. This symposium has been around for almost three decades and thanks to your continued interest, we will keep moving ahead. This symposium, however, would not be happening without the combined effort of several people. First of all, we would like to thank the Theatre and Media Arts Department at BYU for their continued support and sponsorship. Our gratitude also goes out to our donors who helped fund this event; we appreciate your generosity. Special thanks go to Nathan Hale for an outstanding poster and to Steve Keele for the beautiful program book cover artwork, both of whom stepped up when James C. Christensen had to cancel his appearance for health reasons. Thanks also go out to the individuals who helped organized this year’s symposium. Lastly, we would like to thank everyone who has attended and continues to support LTU&E. As always, we hope you enjoy yourselves. These symposia are designed to achieve several things. We discuss science fiction and fantasy on an academic/intellectual basis because it truly is a lit- erary medium that provokes thought. The symposium also helps provide knowledge for fledgling writers so that their horizons can be expanded. One of the most rewarding purposes is the sense of community it creates. Life, the Universe, & Everything provides the opportunity for people of common interests to come together. Net- works can be formed, friendships can be made, but in the end, every- body gets something from these events.

Letter from the Chair Welcome to the thirtieth incarnation of Life, the Universe, and Everything! It’s been, shall we say, exciting getting everything put together this year. With all of the changes we’ve had to make (not least of which is the obvious alteration in location), the thirtieth anniversary is sort of a new birth for the symposium; we’re hoping that we’ll be able to reach an even larger audi- ence and continue to grow in the future. And speaking of births, LTUE is now older than many of its attendees! Over the last three decades, LTUE has hosted a distinguished series of authors, artists, and editors, providing great opportunities both for fans and, more importantly, for new entrants into the SF&F fields. We hear every year about how attending LTUE was helpful in launching new careers, and we hope that we’ll continue to fulfill that role and get better at it. So, attendees— don’t be shy about talking to our guests. Most of them don’t even bite. When I first started attending LTUE, it just seemed like one of those -fix tures of nature—things that will always be there because you cannot imagine the world without them. But of course, the symposium only happens if there are real people behind the scenes doing real work to make it happen every year. So, thanks to all of this year’s committee members and gofers. Thanks to our panel members and presenters, without whom there would be nothing to show up to.

This article seeks to rectify that gap by highlighting the information behaviors of fiction writers, including the ways in which they network, as well as the processes they use when writing. In doing so, it reveals that fiction writers of all genres have many experiences in common, such as the "seed incident" that serves as the starting point when writing fiction.
