For the species listed in Table 1 below, basic information such as range (in this case county distribution), habitat, and key identification characteristics accompany a photograph of each species. This information comes from a variety of sources that includes the Manual of the Vascular Flora of Texas, Biota of North America Project, knowledge of the authors, and various other publications (cited in the text). All photographs are used with permission and are fully credited to the copyright holder and/or originator. Other items, but in particular scientific publications, traditionally do not require permissions, but only citations to the author(s) if used for scientific and/or nonprofit purposes. Names, both common and scientific, follow those in USDA NRCS (2015). When identifying milkweeds in the field, attention should be focused on the distinguishing characteristics listed for each species. -

After graduation from college, he moved to Eastern Oklahoma State College where he took a position as Instructor in Botany and Agronomy. In the course of conducting botany field trips and working with local residents on their plant problems, the author became increasingly interested in the flora of that area and of the State of Oklahoma. This led to an extensive study of the northern portion of the Oauchita Highlands with collections currently numbering approximately 4,200. The specimens have been processed according to standard herbarium procedures. The first set has been placed in the Herbarium of Oklahoma State University with the second set going to Eastern Oklahoma State College at Wilburton. Editor’s note: The original species list included habitat characteristics and collection notes. Abstract This checklist has 785 species and 801 taxa (for taxa, the varieties and subspecies are included in the count) in 90 plant families. The most common plant families are the grasses (Poaceae) and the sunflower family (Asteraceae). Of this total, 513 taxa are definitely known to occur on the Comanche National Grassland. The remaining 288 taxa occur in nearby areas of southeastern Colorado and may be discovered on the Comanche National Grassland. The Author Dr. Donald L. Hazlett has worked as an ecologist, botanist, ethnobotanist, and teacher in Latin America and in Colorado. He has specialized in the flora of the eastern plains since 1985. His many years in Latin America prompted him to include Spanish common names in this report, names that are seldom reported in floristic pub- lications. He is also compiling plant folklore stories for Great Plains plants. Since Don is a native of Otero county, this project was of special interest. Guidance outlines the recommended practices and explains their rationale in an effort to achieve consistency in the regulation of hazardous waste. It is important to note, however, that the term implies no enforcement authority. The Agency may not require an entity to follow methods recommended by this or any other guidance document. Guide to the Milkweeds of New York City Asclepias – Milkweed Description: Perennial herbs from thick roots or deep rhizomes, the whole plant usually producing a white, sticky sap. Leaves usually opposite, sometimes alternate or whorled. Flowers in rounded umbels. Fruits inflated pods with many plumed seeds. Where Found: Asclepias is an American genus comprising approximately 100 species; most occur in grasslands and woodland openings caused by disturbances such as high winds or fire. In New York City, eleven wild species have been documented. Today, three species are common, four are extinct and the rest are rare or infrequent. Natural History: Milkweed flowers are some of the most complex in the plant kingdom and like orchids, they evolved elaborate structures to ensure cross-fertilization. The sepals are small and usually hidden by the petals which may resemble sepals because they are the lowermost visible floral organs and are usually less brightly colored than the rest of the flower. Above the petals are structures called hoods, which are usually rigid, boat-shaped and brightly colored, often contrasting with the drooping petals below. It is the hoods that hold the nectar. Arising from the base of each hood is a horn that either projects above the hoods or not. Together the hoods and horns are termed the Corona. Normally the stamens of a flower are attached near the base of the petals, but in Milkweeds (and orchids), the stamens are highly elaborated into specialized structures called Pollinaria. These are attached to the stigma in the center of the flower. The ovary of the flower is Asclepias syriaca - Common Milkweed Holmgren et al., 1998. -

MCMILLAN School of Agriculture, Forestry, and the Environment Clemson University Clemson, South Carolina 29634 AMY HACKNEY BLACKWELL Department of Biology Furman University Greenville, South Carolina 29613 and South Carolina Botanical Garden Clemson, South Carolina 29634 ABSTRACT We provide a list of all vascular plant specimens collected in the Carolinas by Mark Catesby that are housed in the historic herbaria at Oxford University and the Sloane Herbarium. The identifications along with notes on the significance of selected specimens are presented. This paper continues our work with Catesby’s collections that we began with his specimens in the Sloane Herbarium at the Natural History Museum, London. The availability of high-quality digital images published on the Oxford Herbarium’s website has facilitated our examination of these specimens. The collections themselves shed light on the nature of the flora of the Carolinas before European settlement, including the native ranges of several problematic taxa. The presence of a number of taxa known to be introduced to the Americas indicates that these introductions must have occurred prior to the 1720s.
