Here it is in full: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; that to secure these rights governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundations on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. The sentence forms a syllogism. The first three “that” clauses constitute the first premise; the fourth “that” clause is the second premise; and the fifth “that” clause is the conclusion p. 1 following from the premises.2 Thus, the sentence moves from premises about individual rights and the role of consent-based government in securing them to a conclusion about the right to revolution. The sentence is a good example of the convergence of eighteenth century standards of logic and rhetoric. Yet in 1823 when William Stone produced an engraving from the signed parchment, an engraving that would eventually become the most commonly reproduced text of the Declaration, he bisected the sentence after “pursuit of happiness,” punctuating it thus and adding a period: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

    BENJAMIN RUSH AND AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE BY PAUL F. LAMBERT* DR. BENJAMIN RUSH of Philadelphia desired American In- dependence as fervently as any Colonial. Even his signing the Declaration of Independence did not adequately illustrate his patriotic zeal, for Rush was a key man in a Philadelphia revolutionary faction feverishly working for Independence,, and he eagerly collaborated with Thomas Paine to create Common Sense. The prominent physician sought separation from Great Britain not as an end in itself, but as a means to establish an ideal society. Strongly influenced by religion and by republi- canism, Rush came to view Independence as necessary to pre- vent English corruption from destroying American virtue, and as essential to the creation of a republican utopia in the New World. Rush's early religious training was an important factor in the evolution of his attitude toward the Mother Country. His initial guidance came from his pious, Presbyterian mother who played an important role in inculcating upon the young Benjamin an intense devotion to moral and religious principles. 2 Rush's mother also sent him to his uncle Samuel Findley's academy for his first taste of formal education. A noted Presbyterian minister., the devout Findley had a considerable impact on the future doctor's religious development. Those states are now in the process of phasing out the teaching of cursive writing, which, apparently, does not accord with the mission statement of the curriculum’s framers: to impart skills that are “robust and relevant” to the modern world. I grew up in the nineteen-fifties, when the art of penmanship was taught to every schoolchild in America, and prized as a sign of cultivation. I loved ruling the blank pages of my copybook, then filling the spaces between the lines with shapely letters—“M” and “W” were my favorite capitals; “j” and “y” my favorite minuscules. If I had not learned to write cursive, I probably never would have learned to read it, and my archival work as a biographer—deciphering the handwritten letters of men and women born in the nineteenth century, or the early decades of the twentieth—would have been extremely arduous, if not impossible.
