Issue 6 May 2012 Page 4 World celebrates 50 years of Musical Wonder by Kerala`s famous son: Dr. K J Yesudas. This year, world renowned musician legend Dr. KJ Yesudas celebrates 50 years in the music industry, Varnakairali pays tribute to the legend himself in this edition. K. J. Yesudas was born in Cochin, on 10th January 1940 to Latin Catholic parents Augustine Joseph and Alice kutty. Jesudas has recorded more than 50,000 songs in various languages including Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Bengali, Gujarati, Oriya, Marathi, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tulu, Malay, Russian, Arabic, Latin and English during a career spanning five decade. He sings Indian classical, devotional, and pop music songs. His singing prowess earned him the India`s National Award for the Best Male Playback Singer seven times (the most by any Indian singer), and the State Award for the Best Playback Singer 43 times which comprises of awards by the State Governments of Kerala(23), Tamil Nadu(8), Andhra Pradesh(6), Karnataka(5), and West Bengal(1). He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1975, followed by the Padma Bhushan in 2002 by the Indian Government for his contributions towards the art. He was awarded Swathi Sangeetha Puraskaram in 2011, the highest music award given by the Kerala Government. After winning the Kerala State Award for Best Playback singer on numerous occasions, he requested to be ruled out of contention to give his peers and newcomers a chance of winning the award. Despite his humble request, he was still given this award several times in the following years. -

Current Affairs 26 January 2019 with PDF Awards & Honors Pranab Mukherjee, Nanaji Deshmukh Bhupen Hazarika awarded Bharat Ratna Social activist Nanaji Deshmukh, Music maestro Bhupen Hazarika and former President Pranab Mukherjee have been awarded with country's highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna. As per a press communique issued by President's office, Nanaji Deshmukh and Bhupen Hazarika will be awarded with the honour posthumously. The President also approved conferment of 112 Padma Awards, including 4 Padma Vibhushan, 14 Padma Bhushan and 94 Padma Shri Awards. Folk artist Teejan Bai, President of Djibouti Ismail Omar Guelleh, Industralist Anil kumar Manibhai Naik and theatre actor Balwant Moreshwar Purandare will be honoured with Padma Vibhushan. Former CAG V K Shunglu, Akali Dal leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Foreigner John Chambers are among those who will be given Padma Bhushan. Journalist Kuldip Nayar will be honoured with Padma Bhushan posthumously. For Padma Shree, Actor Manoj Bajpayee, Prabhu Deva, cricketer Gautam Gambhir, footballer Sunil Chhetri, Archer Bombayla Devi Laishram, archaeologist K K Muhammed are among those chosen for the awards this year. Actor Kader Khan has been awarded Padma Shree posthumously. Films Division Ministry of Information & Broadcasting Govt. of India 24- Dr.G Deshmukh Marg MUMBAI -400 026 PRESS RELEASE Dated 22st Sept., 2020 NRITYANJALI – an ode to Indian Classical Dance and Maestros Indian Classical Dance is an umbrella term for various performing arts whose theory and practice can be traced to the Sanskrit text, Natya-Shastra, the foundational treatise for the text of which is attributed to the ancient scholar Bharata Muni. Prominent dance forms like Bharat Natyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Kathakali, Sattriya, Manipuri and Mohini Aattam are traditionally regional, all of them include music and recitation in local language or Sanskrit, and they represent a unity of core ideas in a diversity of styles, costumes and expression. After the overwhelming response to Raagotsav, an online film festival on Indian Classical Music, Films Division is presenting the first part of “Nrityanjali”, an on line festival on Indian Classical Dance and Maestros between September 23–25, 2020. Ten films on the life and works of India’s leading classical dancers will be streamed on Films Division website and You Tube channel. Nrityanjali showcases “Sitara Devi” (20 min./1995/Amar Varma), a film on doyen of Kathak Dance, hailed as the Queen of Kathak by Rabindranath Tagore, honoured with many awards including Padma Shri, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Kalidas Samman. “Yamini Krishnamurthy” (20 min./1981/Balwant Gargi), is on the leading Bharat Natyam exponent who also excels in Odissi and Kuchipudi. She has been honoured with Padma Vibhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Natya Shastra Award. “Raja-Radha” (22 min./1989/Kunwar Sinha), a biographical film on the well known Kuchipudi dancer-couple Raja and Radha Reddy, who gave new dimension to the traditional Kuchipudi dance and honoured with Padma Bhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Nritya Choodmani Award. -

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA HOME AFFAIRS LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO:1713 ANSWERED ON:07.03.2006 AWARDING OF PADMA BHUSHAN AND PADMA SHREE Azmi Shri Iliyas;Bishnoi Shri Jaswant Singh Will the Minister of HOME AFFAIRS be pleased to state: (a) the name of the persons who have been honoured with Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shree awards during each of the last three years; (b) the procedure adopted by the Government for awarding these awards; (c) whether the Union Government conduct any enquiry of their own or through any other agency prior to giving award to awardees; (d) if so, the details and name of the agency; (e) if not, the reasons therefor; (f) the name of the persons whose name were considered for the above awards but were not found suitable; (g) the qualifications required for the aforesaid awards and then composition of the Committee which decides them; and (h) the name of the authority which finalises the list of awardees? VISION IAS www.visionias.in Civilian Awards Padma Awards Padma Awards were instituted in the year 1954. The award is given in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year and normally not conferred posthumously. However, in highly deserving cases, the Government could consider giving an award posthumously if the demise of the person proposed to be honoured has been recent, say within a period of one year preceding the Republic Day on which it is proposed to announce the award. The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz. - art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. • Padma Shri is awarded for ‘distinguished service’. • Padma Bhushan for ‘distinguished service of a high order’. • Padma Vibhushan for ‘exceptional and distinguished service'. Thousands of spectators, including foreign dignitaries and the country's top political and military brass, attended the celebrations. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa's presence as Chief Guest was significant in view of the parade highlighting Mahatma Gandhi's contribution to India's freedom struggle. Gandhiji had joined the struggle after a 21-year stay in South Africa. India's fastest indigenous train ‘Trian 18’ renamed as ‘Vande Bharat Express’ India's fastest indigenous train which will run from Delhi to Varanasi has been named as Vande Bharat Express.
