Welcome to the October Marnhull Messenger Chris Ryu - Messenger Editor

A lot can happen in a year... We moved to the village the first week of October last year from Poole and while at the time, we did question if we’d made the right choice, those feelings faded quickly. One year on and we feel like we’ve lived here forever! That’s a great testament to the culture in Marnhull. Everyone is so friendly, there are countless social activities and groups like Marnhull Village Care make sure that no-one is excluded. By the time you read this, the 2015 Newcomers Party will have welcomed many more to the village. In-fact, from what I hear - this The WI Celebrate 100 years year’s is the biggest yet... Last week I was invited to the WI Tea Party and was so pleased to see On national WI day (Wednesday 16th September), the Marnhull WI such a great group of people and hear what they like most about gathered at the Methodist Church hall to celebrate 100 years of the the village. It was a great opportunity to learn more about the WI and our village branch in particular. This issue sees two new additions: Gardening Tips and Parish Mutterings. Gardening Tips ...and 90 years too We have such a great pool of expertise in the village, especially with a thriving Garden Club. This new column will provide actionable The tea party also doubled up as an opportunity to celebrate the birthday tips each month on what you should be doing in your garden at of member Molly, who turned 90 earlier this year. Molly was presented that time. with flowers while the group sang happy birthday to her. Parish Mutterings Chris Ryu Cllr. Trevor Vaughan has come up with a great new column sharing the top talking points in the village each month. Upcoming features I’m exploring suggestions such as printing Marnhull Recipes, local facts, a walk of the month, reader special offers from local businesses and a children’s page. More on these in upcoming issues...

Charity Night! Village Hall Matters

Further to my last report which concerned a fundraising effort. I am pleased to announce that we have already received a generous donation from a village resident and secured the services of a very able fundraiser. Charity Dorset Night I approached John Dowsett, a relative newcomer to the village and he has agreed to head up our fund raising efforts. He has had several years experience with his previous village hall especially with regard to grants Royal British Legion and fund raising in general. He has given me an initial response which is as follows: Saturday 24th October “As a recent newcomer to the village and user of the village hall. I am delighted to join the fundraising effort towards the extension/ 7 for 7.15pm improvement project. It is really good to see the amount that is already in hand. Local generosity and support are a great help in obtaining grants from outside sources and I look forward very much to assisting in this. Discovering Dorset by Rev. Stewart Timbrell Fresh ideas and news of other village efforts are always very welcome” Call My Bluff - Quiz night I hope and trust that anyone who has anything to offer John in his quest for success will be forthcoming with any relevant information that may Old Marnhull - Ian Kendall help. Finally, I am making another appeal for a new secretary for the Village Marnhull’s own Jethro - Les Elsworth hall committee as our current incumbent has stepped down recently for personal reasons. This is not an onerous task. It entails taking minutes for our committee meetings which are only usually every 2 or 3 months Tickets £3 or two for £5 intervals and sending out invitations to future meetings to all our Village clubs using the hall .I should be pleased to receive any expressions of interest before our AGM planned for 18th November. Marnhull Business Wins Award Two community spirited villagers Jo Buchan and Alan Denham, took it upon themselves to repair the worn bench on Burton Street. The bench has over the years proven to be the ideal resting spot for those visiting the row of shops, but in recent years has been looking a bit worse for wear. Jo and Alan, who know each other from both being husbands of Marnhull WI members, carried out the work over a few weeks and returned the bench to it’s rightfull place on WI Day, securing the bench to the paving. Alan transported the bench to the home of Jo who prepared the bench, and applied several coats of varnish to keep it weather proofed for a few more years. Alan also strimmed and cleared the area around the bench. Marnhull WI members would like to thank both Alan and Jo, for kindly repairing the Bench, for everyone to enjoy. Our Lady's Church The Methodist Church

Catholic Church of Our Lady, Marnhull Dear Friends,

& Those of us who hold Christian faith sometimes need reminding that our St. Benedict's, Gillingham identity is rooted in stories of migration… Abram (later Abraham) left his home in Ur in response to God’s call and promise; the story of Moses www.marnhullandgillinghamrc.org.uk and the Exodus remains a defining narrative for Jews and Christians alike; the return of the Israelite people to Jerusalem following the Exile was a Sunday Masses - 9.30am & 6pm (Marnhull) / 11am (Gillingham) traumatic journey; and, Jesus famously said of himself, ‘Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.’ Saints in October (Matt. 8.20) The common strand is that God leads people ‘home.’ 1 – Saint Therese of Lisieux The present dilemma facing leaders (both political and religious) across Europe is huge as we watch a tide of humanity streaming from the 4 – Saint Francis of Assisi most troubling and desperate situations in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, to 12 - Saint Wilfrid name but three war-torn and divided nations. It all seems very far from the lanes and fields of N. Dorset. However, we are called to be a Holy 15 - Saint Teresa of Avila people – a people whose life and priorities are shaped by the values of 20 - Saint Paul of the Cross God’s Kingdom. There are those who are uneasy about the migrant crisis – might we be worse off financially if we open our doors to others? Might 22 - Saint Pope John Paul II this affect our sense of identity? Will we inadvertently let in some who will 25 - Saint Daria wish to do harm to our nation? We cannot answer these questions easily, but our first calling is prayerfully to ‘seek the Kingdom of God.’

Earlier this year the European Methodist Council met in Bulgaria, near Saint Teresa of Avila (1515-1582) - 15th October the crossing point with Romania. Much of the time at that Council was St. Teresa is the patron saint of Headache sufferers. Her symbol is a heart, spent in conversation on migration in light of the reality of hundreds of thousands of desperate people crossing the borders of Europe, fleeing an arrow, and a book. She was canonized in 1622. conflict and persecution and seeking the possibility of a future for themselves and their children.

Bishop Christian Alsted (from Denmark and one of the Co-chairs of the Pause for Thought: Methodist European Council) commented, ‘We know that migration raises a complex set of issues that cannot be solved with simplistic solutions. “Teach us to give and not count the cost.” We struggle together as Churches whose members continue to hold a variety of political and theological views. We seek to move beyond a St. Ignatius de Loyola sterile discussion about the rightness of migration to engaging with the many complicated issues involved in the crisis affecting our continent. In all this, we are aware of our own limitations and the need of the help of others. We have drawn hope and inspiration from stories of Methodists working in many places to assist migrants and refugees. We give thanks to God for their vision, courage and continuing service in the name of Village Harvest Festival Christ. May we all draw inspiration from their example.’ Just to remind you that The Village Harvest Supper will be held on Wednesday 7 October 2015 in the Village Hall at 7pm for 7.30pm. We may not be at the ‘sharp end’ of this crisis, but many of our sisters and brothers in Europe are. In all the baffling complexities, may we be open to Drinks will be served followed by a meal and pudding and then ‘Call the simple truth that, God wants people to have a home… my Bluff’.
