Rector’s Ramblings What a beautiful part of the world we live in, rolling hills, winding rivers, lovely woodland and picturesque villages. All is well, but is it? As we read our newspapers, sit down and listen to the news we realise that we are just kidding ourselves, whilst all around is beautiful, society is falling apart. We live in a world full of lies, deceit, double standards and injustices. Many have turned their back on their Christian faith, blaming God for all the woes of the world. They point to the turbulence in America, the devastation in parts of the Middle East, the pure Evil coming out of North Korea, and rather than look into themselves they blame others for all the injustices and failures they see around them. But the God I know and love is a God of Justice, mercy and love. You see we cannot be in a right relationship with the God of justice whilst being indifferent to all the injustices of our world. We cannot have it all ways, we cannot say that we love the God of justice and at the same time turn a blind eye to all the injustices that are an offence to His character and teaching. To be fed by God’s justice is to listen to the God that says ‘I will seek the lost, I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy.’ The justice that God offers us is a commitment to righting wrongs and bringing the human family back into a right relationship with himself and a right relationship with each other. Society today has become a society of ME, I, WE want. A society that has lost its way, a society that puts self before the lonely, the poor, the refugee and the lost. So who are those at fault for the world’s troubles, God or US? To plagiarise a verse from the letter of John, who was not averse to telling things as they were. ‘Those who say, “I love God” and hate their brothers or sisters are liars’ (1 John 4.20). Maybe instead of blaming others, being jealous of others, we should start loving each other, not on the surface, but with a deep love, the kind of love our God of justice loves us with. An unconditional love, a redeeming love, a perfect love for ever. Sue Le Riche

3 Lent 2017 1st March Ash Wednesday service of Holy Communion 12 noon at Shillingstone Church Lent is not only the time to give up chocolate/alcohol/pancakes but is also traditionally the time of year to undertake a course of study. While the former may leave you slimmer or possibly grumpier, the latter will have much longer lasting effect as it grows your mind. This year I thought we would look at some big ethical questions and how Christianity relates to them. The General Synod of the Church of has recently been debating Issues in Human Sexuality so it seems an appropriate time to bring them to the local level too. This is a 5-week course is happening in two venues: 1. Highlands, High Street, Child Okeford on Wednesdays 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th March and 5th April. 7.30pm – 8.30pm 2. 4 An Appeal Do You Remember the Two Ronnies?

I am working on a small project about the time the Two Ronnies came to Okeford Fitzpaine in the 1970’s.

Were you there? Did you meet them? Can you remember where filming took place and what was filmed? If you have any information at all please contact me on 01258 861979 or rrowe@okefordfitzpaine- pc.gov.uk

5 An Apology and Clarification In the February edition we published an article relating to a damaged car outside the church. There was no intention to suggest a connection either with attendees at St Andrew's Church or the Village Hall auction, which events were taking place at the time of the incident and were mentioned only to jog the memory of witnesses.

Blackmore Vale Lions Father Christmas Float 2016. On a dry but cold night the BMV Lions and members of Okeford Fitzpaine Short Mat Bowls Club went round the village with Father Christmas. The children really enjoyed talking to him and getting some sweets. We collected over £200 that night for the BMV charities. They have very kindly donated £200 to our village school to help them build their “Spiritual Garden.” Thank your to all who donated that night and we will look forward to seeing you all again this December. It has been a very busy beginning to the term at Okeford Fitzpaine Primary School with the children enjoying their new class topics. Maple Class are working on a ‘Frozen World’ theme, Beech class have been learning about Europe and Oak class are studying ‘Being Human’ The term started with a whole school focus on British Values, with learning focused around The Royal Family, debate, democracy and British Law. This work is being followed up with Oak class visiting the Houses of Parliament. We have also been involved in work around road safety for children and for parents which will be followed up by a survey. The year 2 and year 5 children have visited ‘Streetwise’ earlier this term to secure their learning about keeping themselves safe both at home and in the environment. We are in continuous support of keeping our children safe and their education around safety. We were sad to see Mrs Cook-Paine leave the school after 15 years of service. The children, staff, parents and governors gave her a nice send off with gifts to remember the school by. We wish her all the best and every success for the future. We have welcomed new teaching staff Miss Foxall in Beech class and Mrs De Silva in Maple class this term. R Tidby

6 Simply FABULOUS cycle rides say it all! As we wouldn’t have enjoyed riding with Doris at 45mph, on Thu 23rd Feb, I postponed our Buds ride to until Thu 2 Mar start time 0930 from Okeford Stores. PLEASE tell anyone you see.

Valentines Challenge Ride Report Twelve cyclists, spanning an age gap of 70yrs but undeterred by the damp of low cloud, took to our lanes for the Valentines Day Challenge — a 15mile circular ride to Milton Abbey Tea Rooms. Organised by Cy- clists Network area coordinator, this was a 'Blossom' category Simply FABULOUS ride. Our youngest rider (11) showed how Dorset hills are no barrier to get- ting about once you are fit and have learnt the necessary skills.

Come and join Kitchener and the rest of his troops! Spring will soon be upon us and that means everything green goes mad and GROWS. In other words our footpaths, highways and byways can soon become overgrown with brambles and nettles etc. As the parish Footpath Officer I am always after ‘Cutters and Slashers’ to help keep these routes clear for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. If you can offer your labour please get in touch. Even if you can only help on an occasional ad-hoc basis that is fine. I just need a list of names I can call upon for our sorties into the jungle! Many villagers are dog walkers and tend to use the same routes regularly. Can I prompt you to carry a pair of secateurs and snip the odd rogue bramble or branch especially around gates and stiles. In May we are organising a circular walk around the perimeter of the village to raise funds for our church. This may be an opportunity for residents new and old to discover paths they did not know existed. Dogs on leads will be welcome. Look out for details in the April Fippenny News. Happy Walking. We will welcome Stephen Candy from the National Trust who will take us through The History of Kingston Lacy

The sun shone for our recent visit to Castle Gardens in . A good number of members enjoyed the usual hot beverage and biscuits, followed by Nicky Cartwright, the Garden’s Gold Club secretary, who gave us an informative talk about plants in season, which were of course all available in the shop. Fortunately we were able to use the 25% discount vouchers to ease the financial pain! Fred was presented with a garden voucher from members in appreciation of his past service as Chairman of the Club. Some members may have heard that regrettably we will not be able to run the Garden Show this year. However the ever-popular potato growing competition will still take place, so please get in touch with me if you want to join in.

Everybody is welcome, so please come along and see what it is like.

9 Eat your Greens! They’re good for you. I expect your Mum said that too. With spring comes one of life’s simple joys, Purple Sprouting Broccoli (PSB) and Spring Greens. UK grown, not that flippy floppy imported stuff which seems to be tough and chewy.

Purple Sprouting Broccoli, or White Sprouting if you can get it.

Broccoli Amandine 1½lb (700g) PSB: 2 oz (50g) butter: 2oz (50g) flaked almonds: 2tbsp lemon juice: salt & pepper. Cook broccoli in salted water for 10-15mins, drain well and turn on dish. Heat butter in pan, toss almonds over gentle heat for appros 5 mins until golden brown. Stir in lemon juice, season anf spoon over broccoli.

Broccoli and Mushrooms in wine 1oz (25g) butter: 1 clove garlic, skinned: 1 small onion, finely chopped: 4oz (100g) button mushrooms, sliced: 1½lb (700g) PSB, trimmed: ¼ pt (150ml) white wine: Salt & pepper. Melt butter in pan, add garlic & onion and cook for about 5 mins until onion is soft. Discard garlic. Add mushrooms and broccoli to pan and sauté gently for 5 mins. Add wine and seasoning. Bring to boil, cover and simmer gently for 10-15 mins, until broccoli is tender but still crisp.

Broccoli, chicken + chorizo pasta 1¼ lb (500g) fusilli pasta: 2 tbsp oil: 7oz (200g) sliced chorizo sausage: 10oz (300g) cooked chicken: 12oz (350g) PSB, cut into similar sized pieces: 1 tbs chopped parsley. Cook pasta according to instructions on packet in large pan boiling water. 3-4 mins before pasta is ready add PSB. While pasta is cooking heat oil in large pan, add chorizo. Fry over medium heat until cooked and has released paprika coloured juices. If it breaks up don’t worry this is normal. Drain pasta & PSB, reserve a little water. Add to chorizo pan with the chicken and tablespoon or two of the cooking water. Gently heat through to warm the chicken, add parsley & season to taste.

10 Spring Greens Trim tough base stalks, and larger tougher ribs. Shred the leaves.

Quick and easy cooking

Boil or steam for 2-3 mins until wilted, drain add a knob of butter and season with salt & pepper.

Stir in a little heated oil or butter until wilted. Season and add a little lemon juice.

Stir fry in oil with chopped garlic and a good splash of soy sauce. You can add finely sliced chilli and/or some grated ginger. Mix in some toasted chopped nuts, peanuts or cashews.

Greens with pancetta or bacon Heat a little olive oil in pan, fry chopped bacon for 2 mins until, browned. Add sliced spring onions, cook for 5mins, stirring. Season with pepper. Some caraway seeds would also make a nice change.

Greens with diced chicken or pork. Heat some oil in pan add diced chicken or pork. Fry on one side until coloured, appros 3 mins, turn smear with a little hone and mustard. Add chopped fresh ginger, sliced sping onions, slice spring greens and little lemon juice. Cook for 3-5 mins or until meat is cooked through. Season with salt & pepper and chopped parsley. Serve with buttered noodles or mashed potatoes.

If you are growing your own, don’t forget that the tops of Brussel Sprouts are very good too. Just treat them as for spring greens.

Neighbourhood Policing Teams (NPTs) in North Dorset are being restructured to better meet the differing needs of rural and town areas. Previously, the teams were organised based on location alone and covered both the town and rural areas of Gillingham, , Sturminster Newton and Blandford. The new team structure will reflect the need to respond to competing priorities in town and rural areas. Blandford Town will have a dedicated team, consisting of five police community support officers (PCSOs) and one police constable (PC), overseen by a police sergeant. A further town-based team will cover Gillingham and Shaftesbury, made up of six PCSOs, two PCs and overseen by a police sergeant. The final team will police the rural areas of North Dorset. The current Gillingham Rural, Shaftesbury Rural, Blandford Rural and Sturminster Newton teams will be combined into one team, dedicated to rural policing. A police sergeant will manage two PCs and six PCSOs. North Dorset Neighbourhood Inspector, Rob Chalkley, said: “This model is already working well in the East of the county, so we are excited to get it up and running here in North Dorset. “The issues facing our towns and our rural areas are different, so they require a bespoke approach from their neighbourhood police. This restructure will ensure that teams have the correct expertise, resources and time to assist the communities they serve. “The introduction of a dedicated rural NPT in North Dorset will ensure that rural communities receive the policing support they require, without resources being diverted to deal with demand in the towns. This complements the increased focus on rural communities and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Martyn Underhill led with the introduction of Pan-Dorset Rural Crime Team, who the rural NPT will work alongside. “The new NPTs will also work closely with the teams of response officers, who respond to calls for service across North Dorset, to protect our most vulnerable victims, robustly police our crime hotspot areas and monitor and deter active offenders.” PCC Martyn Underhill, commented: “Over half of Dorset’s residents live in rural areas, so it is critical that we continue to develop our approach to rural crime. “The introduction of the Rural Crime Team last year represented an important step towards consistency in intelligence, reporting and crime prevention. Consolidating the work done to tackle rural crime in North Dorset into one team that is equipped with the correct knowledge and expertise will help to continue this positive trend.”

My Mother’s two brothers were also in the conflict. Uncle Reg Trowbridge served his whole time in France and came through with hardly a scratch but suffered badly from trench foot. This was a common problem for the soldiers in the trenches. It was caused by having to keep their boots and socks on for sometimes weeks on end and, when they finally got to take them off, the skin often came off with the socks. This gave him problems for a while after the war.

Uncle Gerald Trowbridge was not so fortunate. He went to France and then was pulled out and sent to the Middle East where he found him- self at the battle of the Dardanelles. He said when he went into battle, they were on a charge when his best pal was hit and killed outright, but no-one was allowed to stop for anything. Bullets were flying past like angry bees. They had advanced and taken some high ground when there was a lull in the battle and Uncle rested behind the front line. As he walked to a new position, he was hit by a sniper. The bullet went straight through his leg, so he was carried back to the medical centre. On the way he passed Tom Oliver, who was from Child Okeford. Tom said “you were lucky it was no worse, and also bloody lucky you’re getting out of it!”

After treatment, Uncle Gerald was moved to a hospital ship which sailed to Alexandria. After he recovered, he moved inland to another camp near Cairo. On arrival, he met another man from Child Okeford, Donald Ridout, who was booking in the new arrivals. He said “good God, Gerald Trowbridge, you are supposed to be dead!” Uncle laughed and said “hardly”, and told the story of how he was wounded.

In the meantime, Granny Trowbridge had received a telegram to say Uncle Gerald was missing, presumed killed. They had heard nothing more and feared the worst. Then one frosty night, Granny suddenly sat up in bed and shouted “our Gerald!” Gramfy said “go back to sleep my dear. We shall hear all in good time.” “No, no” said Granny. “Listen. It’s Gerald. It’s his walk.” The footsteps came closer, right up to the front door. Tap, tap, tap on the door. Gramfy ran downstairs, opened the door and there was Gerald. “Hello” said Gerald. “Have you got room for a lodger?” He was home. The celebra- tions went on all night. The story was told over and over again, always with the same happy ending.

19 4 February 2017 – 25 March 2017 Temporary Exhibition—’MIX’ The MIX exhibition is a chance to show the work of three local artists in the temporary exhibition gallery. They all have a long association with Dorset County Museum through their voluntary work in various departments. Maddy Down, Helen Francis and Peter Runeckles work in a wide variety of styles and media including oils, watercolour, pastels, textiles and enamels. They have arrived at this point on their creative journeys by very different routes. Maddy Down's interest in painting was prompted by gaining a degree in Art History at Winchester in 2001. She was brought up in the Yorkshire Dales but has lived in Dorset for 45 years. The Dorset coast, cliffs and landscapes are her inspiration. She conveys what she feels rather than a purely literal response. Helen Francis trained at Loughborough College of Art gaining a BA (Hons) in Textiles specialising in embroidery. After graduating she worked at the Hampton Court Palace and the Victoria and Albert Museum as a textile conservator. An interest in historic needlework and costume continues through her work as a volunteer at the Museum.

20 21 Alternative Dispute Resolution can help you If you have a complaint about something you’ve bought, whether goods or a service, and dealing directly with the trader hasn't worked, you could ask an independent person to look at your consumer problem and try and find a solution. This is known as Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). The benefits for consumers are that ADR schemes are usually free or low cost and simple to use. Ombudsman services are a type of ADR scheme which are impartial and free for consumers to use. They cover:  financial companies, such as banks, building societies and insurance companies  retailers, including online retailers  energy companies  telephone and internet companies  furniture removers There is also a Motor Ombudsman which covers the automotive industry. It can deal with complaints regarding vehicle sales – new and used, service, repair and vehicle warranties, provided the trader is a member. Most main dealers are members. Consumers can also ‘rate’ garages too. Many trade associations also offer alternative dispute resolution as part of their services for their members. For instance, The Institute of Professional Willwriters offers a com- plaints service for complaints against willwriters and ABTA (The Travel Association) covers complaints involving leisure services such as package travel and travel agency services. The Federation of Master Builders covers complaints about the construction of new houses and house maintenance and improvement services, provided the trader is a member. The Alternative Dispute Resolution Regulations 2015 require almost all businesses which sell directly to consumers to point the consumer to a certified ADR scheme – where they cannot resolve a dispute in-house, and declare whether or not they intend to use that scheme. So if you have a complaint you can’t resolve, always check to see whether your com- plaint is covered by an ombudsman scheme or other ADR scheme, before considering court action. Indeed, the courts will have expected you to have explored those routes first before bringing the matter to them. If you would like advice about your consumer rights then please contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 040506. 22 North Dorset Bite Sized Training "Choosing Your Legal Structure and Risk Management" This two hour ‘Bite Size’ course, led by Dorset Community Action, is aimed at voluntary and community groups and will assist you in understanding which legal structures are the most useful for your organisation, writing governing documents (such as a constitution) and developing policies and procedures in order to manage risk and liability. The course will cover:-  Understanding different legal structures and which models may be the most effective for your organisation  Understanding how to write effective governing documents  The development or updating of policies and procedures in order to manage risk and liability to your organisation Date: 15th March 2017 at 10.00 to 12.00 (9.45 Registration) Venue: Gillingham Fire Station Price: £30 pp for voluntary and community grps, £40 pp for statutory grps Further Information: 01202 847605 or email [email protected]

Dorset Wildlife Trust North Dorset Group Events - Wednesday 15th March 2017 Gardens, of whatever size, can offer a wonderful habitat for many of our wildlife species. Yet it’s not always easy to know just what to plant in order to attract butterflies, birds and other native creatures. The Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Community Conservation Officer, Briony Baxter, can help with ideas for flowering plants to attract insects throughout the year, as well as ideas for water features and why dead wood and long grass can make beneficial habitats. And that is just to start you off – she’ll have many more ideas for you when she delivers her illustrated talk on Gardening for Wildlife on Wednesday 15th March at 7.30pm in the Village Hall at (SP7 0PF). £2 (including tea/coffee & biscuits); no charge for children under 16. 26 Dave Mynne presents

at St. Nicholas School, Child Okeford 7:30pm Saturday 25th March Based (very loosely!) on the epic poem by Homer!

Picture this...  1198 BC. Ancient Greece.  Figs and olives ripen under clear blue skies.  The seat of learning and philosophy  Where poets write the tragedies.  A land for the gods...  And heroes. The kingdom of Ithaca is ruled by Odysseus...

From the makers of 'Great Expectations' and 'Dracula' comes a tale more exciting than excitement itself: The ODYSSEY! It's Greek stuff... all the good bits with the boring stuff removed. If ever a show was designed for the smallest venues, this is it; a compact piece of theatre magic. David Mynne's skill with just a few simple props, a rubber face and clear and concise storytelling will fill you with drama and delight!

This year he's going to hell and back in the company of Heroes, Gods and Monsters. A host of exciting (and daft) characters - including a one-eyed Cyclops, a six-headed monster and the terrifying Sea God Poseidon - will conjure up a mighty storm and keep you on the edge of your seat. Suitable For: Adults and older children (12+) Tickets: The Cross Stores, Child Okeford from 01st March or on the door. Adult - £9 U18 - £7, Family (2A2C) - £28. Bookings on : 01258 861612 An
