Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Formé à Seattle, SOUNDGARDEN est généralement associé à la mouvance Grunge qui explose en 1991 avec NIRVANA et son album essentiel Nevermind. La musique du groupe emmené par le chanteur Chris CORNELL ne se résume toutefois pas à ce courant. Des similitudes peuvent être constatées, en premier lieu de par l’appartenance des deux formations à cette nouvelle scène de Seattle. Bruce PAVITT, fondateur du label Sub Pop, figure en effet parmi les amis du groupe, ce qui lui permet, avant NIRVANA, de devenir la première formation signée par l’incontournable officine Underground. Ensuite, la musique de SOUNDGARDEN est fréquemment caractérisée par la noirceur et la mélancolie. Cependant, Badmotorfinger, deuxième effort du groupe publié en 1991 par la compagnie nationale A & M, avec laquelle il vient de conclure un contrat avantageux, révèle des influences qui le rattachent davantage au Metal. L’album comporte de nombreuses compositions reposant sur des riffs plombés. Ainsi Jesus Christ Pose rappelle fortement LED ZEPPELIN, et le groupe paie sa dette à BLACK SABBATH sur le titre Slaves & Bulldozers. Après ce disque acclamé par la critique, SOUNDGARDEN connaîtra son apogée avec la sortie en 1994 de Superunknown, qui devient numéro un aux États-Unis avec trois millions d’exemplaires vendus.

    Ali 1 Musical Imaginary, Identity and Representation: The Case of Gentleman the German Reggae Luminary A Senior Honors Thesis Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation with distinction in Comparative Studies in the undergraduate colleges of The Ohio State University By Raghe Ali April 2013 The Ohio State University Project Advisors Professor Barry Shank, Department of Comparative Studies Professor Theresa Delgadillo, Department of Comparative Studies Ali 2 In 2003 a German reggae artist named Gentleman was scheduled to perform at the Jamworld Entertainment Center in the south eastern parish of St Catherine, Jamaica. The performance was held at the Sting Festival an annual reggae event that dates back some twenty years. Considered the world’s largest one day reggae festival, the event annually boasts an electric atmosphere full of star studded lineups and throngs of hardcore fans. The concert is also notorious for the aggressive DJ clashes1 and violent incidents that occur. The event was Gentleman’s debut performance before a Jamaican audience. Considered a relatively new artist, Gentleman was not the headlining act and was slotted to perform after a number of familiar artists who had already “hyped” the audience with popular dancehall2 reggae hits. When his turn came he performed a classical roots 3reggae song “Dem Gone” from his 2002 Journey to Jah album. Unhappy with his performance the crowd booed and jeered at him. He did not respond to the heckling and continued performing despite the audience vocal objections. Empty beer bottles and trash were thrown onstage. Finally, unable to withstand the wrath and hostility of the audience he left the stage.

    ERIC CLAPTON BIOGRAFIA Eric Patrick Clapton nasceu em 30/03/1945 em Ripley, Inglaterra. Ganhou a sua primeira guitarra aos 13 anos e se interessou pelo Blues americano de artistas como Robert Johnson e Muddy Waters. Apelidado de Slowhand, é considerado um dos melhores guitarristas do mundo. O reconhecimento de Clapton só começou quando entrou no “Yardbirds”, banda inglesa de grande influência que teve o mérito de reunir três dos maiores guitarristas de todos os tempos em sua formação: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck e Jimmy Page. Apesar do sucesso que o grupo fazia, Clapton não admitia abandonar o Blues e, em sua opinião, o Yardbirds estava seguindo uma direção muito pop. Sai do grupo em 1965, quando John Mayall o convida a juntar-se à sua banda, os “Blues Breakers”. Gravam o álbum “Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton”, mas o relacionamento com Mayall não era dos melhores e Clapton deixa o grupo pouco tempo depois. Em 1966, forma os “Cream” com o baixista Jack Bruce e o baterista Ginger Baker. Com a gravação de 4 álbuns (“Fresh Cream”, “Disraeli Gears”, “Wheels Of Fire” e “Goodbye”) e muitos shows em terras norte americanas, os Cream atingiram enorme sucesso e Eric Clapton já era tido como um dos melhores guitarristas da história. A banda separa-se no fim de 1968 devido ao distanciamento entre os membros. Neste mesmo ano, Clapton a convite de seu amigo George Harisson, toca na faixa “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” do White Album dos Beatles. Forma os “Blind Faith” em 1969 com Steve Winwood, Ginger Baker e Rick Grech, que durou por pouco tempo, lançando apenas um album.

He was also a teaching assistant to David Baker, played in jazz ensembles, and taught private lessons. He has played across the US and UK, as well as in Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. Dave has performed with Ron Miles, Art Lande, Janet Feder, Elliott Sharp, Matt Wilson, Reginald Veal and has recorded with producer/engineer Steve Albini. Jeff Jenkins has released four CD’s in the last 15 years. The most recent on Capri Records entitled “Cique”, is an eclectic exciting blend of jazz and funk.
