For this reason Theatre Embassy supports the development of talent, artistry and concepts. 2 THEATRE EMBASSY | 2001-2017 Theatre Embassy Mission Theatre Embassy sees a world in which art and culture are self-evident, necessary factors for the integral development of people, society and civilisation. In this ideal world the artist plays a central role as the driving force behind change and sustainable development. Theatre provides the necessary medium: theatre integrates a variety of art forms, irrespec- tive of culture or continent, and can reach a broad audience. Vision Theatre Embassy’s objective is to achieve global sustainable development: we focus our attention on socio-cultural de- velopment and human forms of expression. Theatre Embassy believes that the magic, power of expression, historical awareness and innovative capacity of the theatre contribute to the development of the world’s societies and civilisations. The universal language of the theatre unites people in their hopes, dreams and ideas: it offers them new perspectives for viewing the world. This in turn contributes to their wellbeing and happiness. Our creative encounters and relationships with our partners are based on equality. Our joint creation of theatre pivots on diversity and reciprocity. We enter into creative cooperation with artists who have the courage to take risks in societies in which the political or economic conditions complicate the realisation of certain forms of art expression. These artists engage with their social surround- ings and often operate in communities with restricted access to artistic schooling and inspiration for their work. In view of our unique focus and efforts we can justifi ably be referred to as an innovative development organisation which is active at the level of the development of creative network links. Theatre Embassy works with partner organisations in Africa, Latin-America and Asia with the objective of enhancing cul- tural infrastructure and developing a global cultural network. I began as a creative entre- preneur but built up a worldwide network. Within the twelve years I have worked with 44 theatre organi- sations realizing 64 theatre projects in 27 different countries. We coached and sent abroad 142 artists and cultural man- agers for 1281 local artists, 1200 volunteers and 16 interns from many different theatre schools within the Netherlands and Europe. Theatre Embassy became associated member of the International Theatre Institute Unesco in 2010. I was responsible for the strategic plan, structural fundrais- ing, selecting partner organisations, artistic and the more complex theatre projects with prolonged tours all over the world. In 1999 a group of artists from the Netherlands and Nica- ragua gathered together to make a road theatre play about the chance of the millennium and went on tour to 9 cities of Nicaragua.     Zena el Khalil Zena el Khalil, born year of the Dragon, is a visual artist, writer and cultural activist based in Beirut, Lebanon. She has lived in Lagos, London and New York. Her work includes mixed media paintings, installations and performance and is a by-product of political and economic turmoil; focusing on issues of violence, gender and their place in our bubblegum culture. She has exhibited in the United States, Europe, Africa, Japan and the Middle East. While living in NYC, Zena co-founded xanadu*, an art collective dedicated to promoting emerging Arab and under - represented artists as a direct response to the 9-11 attacks which she witnessed. Currently, xanadu* is based in Beirut where Zena is focused on curating cultural events and publishing poets and comic book artists. During the 2006 invasion of Lebanon, Zena was one of the first largely followed Middle Eastern bloggers; her writings published in the international press, including the BBC, CNN, and Der Spiegel. The entire Guardian G2 supplement in July was dedicated to her blog, Beirut Update. In 2008, she was invited to speak at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo and soon after, completed her memoir, Beirut, I Love You, now translated in several languages. Her publishers include The New York Review of Books and Saqi Books and Publishers Weekly gave her book a starred review. In an attempt to spread peace, Zena is often seen running around Beirut in a big pink wedding dress. In 2012, Zena was made a TED Fellow and has since given a few TED and TEDx talks.

Image below: Newsha Tavakolian, from the Listen series, 2011. REALISM INTRODUCTION The New Art Exchange is proud to present Realism in Rawiya: Photographic Stories from the Middle East. IN RAWIYA: Rawiya meaning ‘she who tells a story’ in Arabic, are the first all-female photographic collective to emerge from the Middle East. This exhibition, curated by New PHOTOGRAPHIC Art Exchange and Saleem Arif Quadri MBE, is Rawiya’s first major survey in the UK. The show comprises 56 framed images (with the option of producing select STORIES FROM works as large-scale photo murals), a video piece, copies of interpretation and a beautifully produced exhibition catalogue. Realism in Rawiya presents the THE MIDDLE work of Myriam Abdelaziz, Tamara Abdul Hadi, Laura Boushnak, Tanya Habjouqa, Dalia Khamissy and Newsha EAST Tavakolian. Established in 2009 the idea of the collective was to provide a supportive platform for female photographers in the Middle East. In addition, each of the six artists were united in their desire to tell the stories of their region in their own words. This was in response to the misrepresentations presented by the global press, which they observed whilst working as photojournalists across the Arab world. This shared experience inspired the members to create their own platform, to present what they felt to be the wider political and social stories currently going unseen. There are those moments which change the trajectory of history and positively impact everything they touch. In January 1972, a group of women met at the annual College Art Association (CAA) conference in San Francisco in a over - flowing room to discuss the topic of sex discrimination in art depart ments. After concluding that there was a need for representation, they immediately collected money to start an organization, and the new Women’s Caucus of the College Art Association came into existence. In 1974 CAA informed the Women’s Caucus they could no longer use the CAA name and in that moment, the Women’s Caucus for Art moved from being a committee of CAA to being Photo by Christopher Ligeza.
