Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips January 4, 2014 Devils-Sabres Preview By Nicolino DiBenedetto Associated Press January 4, 2014 The Buffalo Sabres may own the fewest points in the NHL, but they've hardly resembled the league's worst team lately at home. Ryan Miller has had a hand in that success. Miller will likely be in net looking to win a sixth straight home game, as the Sabres face the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night. Buffalo (11-26-4) not only has the worst record in the league, its average of 1.63 goals ranks last - 0.60 behind Minnesota for 29th. The Sabres fell 4-1 at Minnesota on Thursday, losing their 11th straight on the road. "It's just one of those things where when we're bad, we're bad," interim coach Ted Nolan said. They've been very good at home, however, going 5-0-1 in their last six home games. They're averaging 2.75 goals to win four straight there for the first time since a five-game streak from Feb. 19-March 12, 2012. Miller has been superb at home, compiling a 1.34 goals-against average and .962 save percentage while winning his last five games in Buffalo. He last won six straight there from Nov. 13-Dec. 9, 2010. Miller, named to the U.S. Olympic team earlier this week, may have a chance to equal that run since he's 4-1-1 with a 1.60 GAA and a shutout over his last six home meetings with the Devils (17-17-8).

DOBBER’S 2010-11 FANTASY GUIDE DOBBERHOCKEY.COM – HOME OF THE TOP 300 FANTASY PLAYERS I think we’re at the point in the fantasy hockey universe where DobberHockey.com is either known in a fantasy league, or the GM’s are sleeping. Besides my column in The Hockey News’ Ultimate Pool Guide, and my contributions to this year’s Score Forecaster (fifth year doing each), I put an ad in McKeen’s. That covers the big three hockey pool magazines and you should have at least one of them as part of your draft prep. The other thing you need, of course, is this Guide right here. It is not only updated throughout the summer, but I also make sure that the features/tidbits found in here are unique. I know what’s in the print mags and I have always tried to set this Guide apart from them. Once again, this is an automatic download – just pick it up in your downloads section. Look for one or two updates in August, then one or two updates between September 1st and 14th. After that, when training camp is in full swing, I will be updating every two or three days right into October. Make sure you download the latest prior to heading into your draft (and don’t ask me on one day if I’ll be updating the next day – I get so many of those that I am unable to answer them all, just download as late as you can). Any updates beyond this original release will be in bold blue.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips Monday, January 21, 2013 Sabres find that winning combination By John Vogl The Buffalo News January 21, 2013 Thomas Vanek got a glimpse of life alongside Cody Hodgson at the end of last season. The two skated together for the final 11 outings, and Vanek put up a point per game with three goals and eight assists. Obviously, he liked the combination. Hodgson’s audition next to the Buffalo Sabres’ most potent scorer deserved an encore, so coach Lindy Ruff began the season Sunday with the center in the middle of Vanek and right wing Jason Pominville. Obviously, Vanek still likes it. Vanek had the best day of his career during a 5-2 victory over Philadelphia, scoring twice and adding three assists as a sellout crowd in First Niagara Center welcomed the NHL back in a rollicking way. “It’s a lot of luck when you get that many points,” said Vanek, who had the best outing by a Buffalo player in five years. “I was fortunate every pass I made went in, and when I scored, I scored. You won’t have many of those nights. You enjoy it, you like the win and you move on.” Vanek can attribute the outing to luck all he wants, but he earned the avalanche of points. He skated hard, controlled pucks, made nice passes and tortured the Flyers and goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov. “He’s got a lot of special talents, and he used them all,” said Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers, who snapped a 2-2 tie with 5:03 left.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips Tuesday, February 5, 2013 Sabres lack balance in scoring By John Vogl Buffalo News February 4, 2013 OTTAWA – Lindy Ruff and assistant coaches James Patrick and Kevyn Adams had solid, lengthy NHL careers. They were not snipers, however. They combined for 313 goals in 2,511 games, which works out to a goal every eight outings or so. That didn’t stop Ruff from joking the trio might provide scoring punch to the struggling Buffalo Sabres. Ruff, Patrick and Adams spent much of Monday’s practice in First Niagara Center anchoring a power play. So after the extended workout, is the trio ready to play on the road against the Ottawa Senators tonight? “We might have to,” Ruff said. There are plenty of “secondary scorers” who would be candidates to come out. Drew Stafford, Jochen Hecht and Nathan Gerbe are among the Sabres still looking for their first goal. Marcus Foligno, Steve Ott and Mihkail Grigorenko head another lengthy list of players who have only one. “That’s our biggest issue right now,” Ott said. “Our second, third and fourth line have not produced at all.” The Sabres will enter Scotiabank Place having won just one of their last seven games. Though they’ve also been a mess defensively, the inability to complement the torrid scoring pace set by Thomas Vanek, Jason Pominville and Cody Hodgson is the main reason for their losing skid. Buffalo needs more scorers, plain and simple. “It needs to happen, and it needs to happen right now,” Stafford said before flying to Canada’s capital.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips October 4, 2013 Senators-Sabres Preview By Jeff Mezydlo Associated Press October 3, 2013 Although their long-time leader is now playing elsewhere, the Ottawa Senators are poised to sustain the success they've achieved the past two seasons. For the first time since the 1995 season, the Senators will take the ice without Daniel Alfredsson when they visit the rebuilding Buffalo Sabres on Friday night. Ottawa recorded 92 points to reach the playoffs in 2011-12 and went 25-17-6 in the lockout-shortened 2013 season, overcoming injuries to Jason Spezza, 2012 Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson and goalie Craig Anderson to again make the playoffs. It went on to upset second-seeded Montreal in the first round. "We probably surprised a few people last year with our injuries and being able to finish the way that we did," forward Zack Smith told the Senators' official website. "I think this year there are a lot more expectations from different people, but if we're a healthy club it's going to be exciting to see what we can actually do." It's who is not in Ottawa, however, that drew some of the biggest offseason headlines throughout the league. After 17 seasons with the team, Alfredsson put off retirement and signed a one- year, $5.5 million deal with Detroit. The 40-year-old is the franchise's all-time leader in games, goals, assists and points, but he scored 10 in 47 contests for a team that ranked 27th with 112 goals during 2013.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips January 7, 2014 Hurricanes-Sabres Preview By Eli Kaberon Associated Press January 7, 2014 Despite being without two of their top players because of injuries, the Carolina Hurricanes are playing some of their best hockey of the season. On Tuesday night, the Hurricanes will visit the Buffalo Sabres, who are also without a key contributor, albeit for a completely different reason. Carolina (18-16-9) extended its season-best winning streak to four games with a 2-1 victory over Nashville on Sunday. Anton Khudobin had another outstanding performance with 31 saves and Jeff Skinner stayed red hot with a goal and an assist. That success has come despite the absences of leading scorer Eric Staal and top goaltender Cam Ward. Both players have lower-body injuries and neither is expected to play Tuesday. ''Momentum is a big thing,'' coach Kirk Muller said. Khudobin, who played in just three of the team's first 43 games because of an ankle injury, has been in net for each of the last three wins and posted a .947 save percentage in those starts. ''We took a chance, three in four nights for him, but he's been playing well,'' Muller said. ''We just went for it.'' Skinner leads the league with 16 goals since Dec. 3, tallying 22 points during that 16-game span. He has three goals in his last three games against Buffalo. The Hurricanes seek their first five-game win streak since a seven-game run Feb. 5-March 4, 2010. They won't have to contend with towering Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers, who will be serving the first game of a three-game suspension handed down Monday.
