A. Corey (pen name of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck). It is about a conflict in the solar system that involves the earth, Mars, and the Asteroid Belt (colonies of people who are on asteroids, referred to as Belters). This is the second book in The Expanse series and is preceded by Leviathan Wakes. The third book, Abaddon's Gate, was released on 4 June 2013. [2] Prelude Eighteen months after the events of Leviathan Wakes, the solar system is in an unweeing balance while unwittingly watching what unfolds on the planet Venus. Earth and Mars are still ready for the battle, and someone did not recognize the warning that the Eros incident held for humankind. Main character arch James Holden is the captain of the recycled Martian warship Rocinante. He and his crew have worked for the Outer Planets Alliance for 18 months since it was known as the Eros incident, and the work just doesn't feel right. While assisting a botanist in the search for his daughter, Holden comes over signs that people are still trying to tame the protomolecule, and the threat comes very close to home. Breaking his OPA tapes, he becomes an ever more important piece in the four-way chess game for what the solar system will run. Chrisjen Avasarala is a high-ranking UN official who knows how to get things done. Pluged into all sources of information, she is simultaneously monitoring events on earth, Mars, Ganymede and Venus, although the last one is the hardest to predict what will happen next. Seeing shifts coming, but unable to completely grasp what they mean, she accepts a post that takes her away from the action knows she plays her expected part until it's time to do the unexpected. Then she met James Holden for the first time on board his ship and tried to evacuate a solar system-wide war. Bobbie Draper is a Martian Marine rod on Ganymede, one of Jupiter's greatest mane and known as the bread basket of outer planets. After witnessing the brutal defeat and destruction of military forces on both sides of a conflict by a third party, she was taken to earth to participate in peace talks, but not follow the party line and get into trouble with her leaders. Now Chrisjen Avasarala, she needs to adapt quickly to interplanetary politics and office intrigue. Later moved her duties to space, her military training comes in handy again. Praxidike Mixing is a botanist who works on Ganymede when tension erupts. His daughter is in the chaos, and he finds information that she actually taken her daycare before the action. He tries to find her in the dilapidated conditions of his house, but lats on james Holden as a source of hope. Eventually, he became the face of the crisis at Ganymede, his efforts to find his daughter's kidnappers had interstellar consequences. Summary On Ganymede, May Meng was kidnapped from her kindergarten by her doctor. A few hours later, Earth and Martian space marine were attacked and effortlessly killed by a super soldier, with Bobbie Draper, a Martian marine, the only survivor. Earth and Mars began a shooting war that ganymede throws into chaos. In the aftermath, May's father Praxidike Mix fruitlessly searches for his daughter amid society collapse in the Ganymede colony. A few months later, the crew of the Rocinante were tasked to deliver emergency aid to Ganymede. Mix spots James Holden during a food riot and ask the crew to help find his daughter. They agree and are able to track her kidnappers to unused tunnels on the moon. Holden, Mix, and ship mechanic Amos Burton discover a secret lab. Amid a shooting with lab security, they accidentally released another super soldier who killed some of the lab staff. In the aftermath of the battle, the crew find remnants of the protomolecule and the corpse of May's friend, who is being treated by May's doctor for immunodefic deficit. The crew rush to escape the station as more chaos erupts around them, and is able to make it back on board the Rocinante. Draper is brought to the peace conversations between earth and Mars on Earth, giving evidence about the super soldier attack on Ganymede. She violates diplomatic protocol and is dismissed by the Martian delegation, but is then hired by Chrisjen Avasarala, who leads the UN negotiations. Draper discovered that Avasarala's assistant betrays her, leading Avasarala to the conclusion that her UN is better trying to get rid of her, from which she concludes that a group in the UN is responsible for the super soldier attack. Avasarala allows Draper to be brought together as her bodyguard on a slow-moving yacht heading to Ganymede on an ostrich relief mission. On their way to Tycho station, the Rocinante crew discovered a super soldier who was pushed away in their cargo hold. They are able to provoke the creature using radioactive bait before evaporated with the ship's exhaust. The Rocinante was damaged during the encounter, but the crew learn more about the super soldiers. Holden confronts Fred Johnson, who he believes is the only other sample of the protooleculate control. Johnson denies involvement in the Ganymede incident and fires Holden's crew. They help Mix to release a video calling for help seeking May and raise enough money to continue the search Upon receiving information about May's doctor, Mix concludes that the super soldiers are created on a basis on Io. Met Met Rocinante recovery, they set out to recover in May. Aboard the yacht, Avasarala sees Meng's video appeal and learns that a UN licentiousness is heading to the Rocinante intercepted. The crew of the yacht prevented her from warning Holden, claiming their communication systems were broken. When they refuse her demands to repair the yacht, Avasarala took Draper control of the vessel. Avasarala sends a warning to Holden, and she and Draper aboard a racing pinnace to rendezvous with the Rocinante. After meeting Holden's crew, Avasarala and Draper share notes of the super soldiers. Realizing that they are detached a few days away from being destroyed by the UN, Avasarala convinced the crew to let her send this information to her contacts within the UN to prevent an all-out war. Draper and Avasarala convinced the Martian navy to help protect the Rocinante. It culminates in a space struggle between un loosening, the Martian forces, and a second UN navy loyal to Avasarala. With the UN Secretary General remembering the admiral hostile to the Rocinants, the battle ends in victory for the Martians and Avasarala's faction. The crew land on Io, where Amos and Mix the rescue of May along with other immunodefic children. Draper kills a super soldier using knowledge about his capabilities. The crew returns to Luna, where the people responsible for the super soldier project are brought to justice. Avasarala has been promoted, Mix has been hired to oversee efforts to repair Ganymede, Draper returns to Mars, and the Rocinante takes a contract escorting a supply ship. Throughout the story, the solar system has watched changes on Venus, culminating introducing something unknown as the book ends. Receiving Critical Reception for Caliban's War was mainly positive,[3][4] with Kirkus Reviews noting that the book could be enjoyed as an standalone novel, but the best appreciated after volume one. [5] Wired.com's Geek Dad and Publishers praised both the novel, with GeekDad commending the book's credible human personalities and technology that is easily recognizable as a highlight. [7] Tor.com gave an overall positive review for California's War, but noted that there was some rather tiring dialogue in the maps, as well as an abundance of laughing transparent politics and some of them at best cartoonishly characterised bad guys.     1 You’re listening to Imaginary Worlds, a show about how we create them and why we suspend our disbelief. I’m Eric Molinsky. One of the most requested topics I get is The Expanse. In case you don’t know, The Expanse is a series of seven novels – the seventh just came out this month. It’s also a show on the SyFy network. They’re filming the third season right now. One of the reason why it’s taken me this long to get to The Expanse is because I had a lot of catching up to do – and I’m still not done with the books yet. The Expanse is set about 200 years in the future – roughly the same time as the original Star Trek -- but I often call it the anti-Star Trek because Star Trek is all about human beings that evolve beyond their primal instincts. That is not how the guys that wrote the novels imagine the future. TF: The thing that always sort of threw me out of the world building in Star Trek was I don't understand why anyone does anything because they sort of say well there's no money anymore. Everybody has everything that they need. Everything we do we do just to better ourselves. That's fantastic as an idea but it doesn't match any humans that I know. That’s Ty Franck. Daniel Abraham is his writing partner. DA: But I would say in Star Trek's defense I think when Star Trek is at its best it’s a different kind of fiction than what we're doing.

Prologue Julie The Scopuli had been taken eight days ago, and Julie Mao was finally ready to be shot. It had taken all eight days trapped in a storage locker for her to get to that point. For the first hours, the ship she’d been taken aboard wasn’t under thrust, so she floated in the locker, using gentle touches to keep herself from bumping into the walls or the atmosphere suit she shared the space with.
