Agobard of Lyon, Empire, and Adoptionism Reusing Heresy to Purify the Faith Rutger Kramer Institute for Medieval Research, Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna, Austria ABSTRACT — In the late eighth century, the heterodox movement Adoptionism emerged at the edge of the Carolingian realm. Initially, members of the Carolingian court considered it a threat to the ecclesiastical reforms they were spearheading, but they also used the debate against Adoptionism as an opportunity to extend their influence south of the Pyrenees. While they thought the movement had been eradicated around the turn of the ninth century, Archbishop Agobard of Lyon claimed to have found a remnant of this heresy in his diocese several decades later, and decided to alert the imperial court. This article explains some of his motives, and, in the process, reflects on how these early medieval rule-breakers (real or imagined) could be used in various ways by those making the rules: to maintain the purity of Christendom, to enhance the authority of the Empire, or simply to boost one’s career at the Carolingian court. 1 Alan H. It was the only battle of a three-year civil war that left too many dead and the survivors, shattered. During this period of unrest, from 840-843, an aristocratic woman, Dhuoda, endured the most difficult years of her life. The loyalty of her absentee husband, Bernard of Septimania, was being questioned by one of the three kings fighting for an upper-hand in this bloody civil war. To ensure his loyalty, his and Dhuoda’s 14-year old son, William, was to be sent to King Charles the Bald as a hostage. -

Anti-Semitic Churchmen justified their position by means of the Bible and the writings of the Fathers, and it is necessary for the historian who wishes to deal with medieval anti-Semitism as a whole to begin with the attitudes of the Primitive Church and of the Fathers. If Louis the German seems unfairly neglected by historians, can it be surprising that his elder brother Pippin I of Aquitaine has attracted even less attention? Admittedly, he has had the benefit of a fine edition of his charters, something his father still awaits, but in most ' other respects he has been unlucky, even with his natural defenders. The substantial but unfinished study of Carolingian Aquitaine by Leonce Auzias is ' at its briefest and least complete in the treatment of this reign. Moreover, the book itself is now half a century old. By such standards alone the rule of Pippin I in Aquitaine deserves a fresh examination, and it should not be forgotten that the king himself has an importance for events beyond the frontiers of the realm entrusted to him. The assessmentof Pippin's significance on the wider stage of Carolingian politics in the reign of Louis the Pious depends to some extent on the view to be taken of the role of the individual participant, particularly in the central events of the years 829 to 834. An interpretation of this period that emphasizes conflicts of ideology is bound to minimize the parts played by the individual actors in the interests of emphasizing unity of motivation. Thus too great a concentration upon Louis the Pious's attempts to create a regnumfor the infant Charles can give a specious inevitability to the events of the 83os, and in particular make the actions of the elder sons seem mechanical and unsubtle. -

How the Conflict Between Bernard of Clairvaux’S Cistercian Order and Peter Abelard’S Scholasticism Contributed to the Equating of Jews with Heretics
ABSTRACT ANDERSON, ROSS MATTHEW. The Effect of Factionalism on Jewish Persecution: How the Conflict between Bernard of Clairvaux’s Cistercian Order and Peter Abelard’s Scholasticism Contributed to the Equating of Jews with Heretics. (Under the direction of Dr. Julie Mell.) The burgeoning antagonism of Western Christians against European Jewry must be understood within the context of the battle between two twelfth-century Christian ideologies. The popular movements of Cistercian apostolicism and Scholasticism’s fixation on rationalism offered feuding epitomes of the ideal ecclesiastic model. The climactic meeting between the spokesmen of both movements (Bernard of Clairvaux and Peter Abelard) reinforced a growing hostility toward those who did not meet the ideal of either movement, especially Jews. Both men contributed to anti-Jewish rhetoric as well as to the growing development of likening heterodoxy with heresy in the twelfth-century Church. As a result, the Jew was increasingly placed within that definition of heresy. Church historians have increasingly studied the works of both Bernard and Abelard to determine the influence each churchman had on anti-Jewish persecution. David Berger’s Persecution, Polemic, and Dialogue: Essays in Jewish-Christian Relations and Abulafia’s Christians and Jews in Dispute are two such works that have respectively argued for the individual culpability of both men in the worsening medieval image of the Jew, but never has a study examined the role that the conflict between the two had on twelfth-century Jews. Lately, individual scholars have independently questioned the role of Jews in the medieval economy, the origins of the Cistercian movement, and the traditional explanation of Bernard’s and Abelard’s conflict at Sens. -

Booker Ivan Gobry, Histoire des Rois de France: Louis Ier, Premier successeur de Charlemagne (Paris: Pygmalion/Gérard Watelet 2002) 254 pp. + appendi- ces, including a genealogical table, chronology, biographical notices, and brief bibliography. “Louis the Pious, who is also called the Debonair, presents the melan- choly spectacle of a man essentially good by nature, full of lofty inten- tions, amiable and magnanimous in private life, quick to repent when he had done amiss, and quicker to forgive injury, yet wanting in vigor and resolution, easily relying on the advice of others, and destitute of the worldly wisdom which would have enabled him to choose his ad- visers well. Men of his character are numerous in every age; they are doomed to suffer themselves and to bring suffering on others; and when they are born, as Louis was born, to hold the reins of government, their life is apt to be a tragedy.”1 This is a characterization of Carolingian king and emperor Louis the Pious (778–840) made not by Ivan Gobry but by Lewis Sergeant more than a century ago. Unfortunately, there is little in Gobry’s new biography of Louis, Histoire des Rois de France: Louis Ier, Premier successeur de Charlemagne, that differs from Ser- geant’s vivid, inveterate portrait. For example, Louis’s “want of vigor and resolution,” “lack of worldly wisdom,” and “reliance upon the advice of others” are charac- ter flaws also invoked repeatedly by Gobry to explain the particularly problematic course of the emperor’s reign: “le sentimental Louis” (36); “Louis était timide, emprunté, éloigné” (91); “Louis le Pieux était certes faible, mais influençable” (202).2 In stark contrast, those sur- rounding Louis, such as his sons Lothar, Louis the German, and Charles the Bald, or his courtier Gombaud, are often characterized as astute, influential, and energetic (as manifested either in terms of their boorish obstinacy or gallant fortitude): “prince Louis, qui était plus 1 L. -

THE MAKING OF MEN, NOT MASTERS: RIGHT ORDER AND LAY MASCULINITY ACCORDING TO DHUODA AND NITHARD by Meg Leja* Abstract: Examining two texts composed by members of the western Frankish lay no- bility over the period 841−843, this article addresses how contemporary conflicts within the Carolingian realm prompted the authors of these texts to reevaluate ideals of lay mas- culinity. A comparison of how Nithard and Dhuoda privileged certain obligations within a man’s life, articulated distinct models of knighthood, and referenced the type of rela- tionship men ought to have with women, and with their bodies, elucidates the ways in which they sought to reform noblemen’s problematic conduct by putting forward their own models of manly behavior. The study ultimately suggests that Dhuoda and Nithard were reacting against a hegemonic masculinity that defined men in terms of their ability to dominate. In response, both authors formulated ideals of masculinity that positioned men within subservient and dependent relationships and that emphasized the need for men to establish harmonious relations with other men, with women and with their bodies. INTRODUCTION The scarcity of extant early medieval texts written by members of the laity makes it difficult to access lay views without the distorting lens of ecclesiastical authorship. It is particularly rare to be able to compare the views of laypeople writing at the same time for similar audiences—a fact that highlights the rare opportunity afforded by two Carolingian texts composed by members of the western Frankish lay nobility over the period 841 to 843.1 The first of these texts is the Histories, a de- tailed chronological account of the civil war among Louis the Pious’s sons, written by Nithard, a nobleman in the service of Charles the Bald.2 The second text in question is Dhuoda’s Manual, the only surviving text written by a Carolingian laywoman.3 All that is known * History Program, University of British Columbia, [email protected].
