Remove the original aluminum seat belt webbing retainers on single-place cabin seats and install leather or vinyl straps, secured at one end with an upholstery screw, and at the other end with a snap. These individual smaller panel sections can be installed with very few screws. They are held in place by the fact that they are slightly oversized and tuck neatly into the rails for a secure fit. Removal and installation are quick and easy, and the aluminum rails add a great look to the side panels. The forward cabin side panels locat- ed between the forward door post and the firewall have always been difficult to remove and reinstall and, you guessed it, they get damaged. Before reupholstering these panels, consider retrimming the upper edges of the panels under the instrument panel. Cutting these panels down in this area makes them much easier to remove and reinstall. This eliminates potential damage without degrading

Single-engine Cessnas can be found all over the world…but many of these aircraft didn’t fly all the way from Kansas to their new homes. GRANT BOYD reveals how one company packs aircraft into containers for shipping around the globe.

ost pilots are aware of companies who conduct ferry flights for the purposes of delivering an aircraft to customers. These flights cover the world: from the remote, humid jungles of the Pacific; across the cold tundra of Siberia; to the sandy beaches of the Caribbean.

Once the aircraft it accepted, it is flown to the company’s hangar for con- tainerization. After it has been contain- erized, the aircraft is typically shipped aboard cargo ships. There is also an option to air-freight when deadlines are tight. The planes are delivered either to a port of entry in the delivery coun- try (“door-to-port”) or directly to the customer’s facility (“door-to-door”). The associated export/import processes are an important facet of the company’s delivery service.

Rush delivery Teeter recalls a special case when the SouthWind team was able to meet an extremely aggressive timeline. He says that in the beginning of December 2013, they received a rush order, the team needed to deliver by year-end. After a lot of work, they wound up getting all 18 planes aboard an Antonov An-124 bound for the Russian Federa- tion, with plenty of time to spare. The plane, and the planes within, arrived the day after Christmas. All said and done, the disassembly and crating of the 18 aircraft took 18 days, plus another two flight days on air freight. While the team works quickly, there is no lack of detail when it comes to the packaging. Much of the packaging has been pre-designed for most models, with dimensions, material, and other details selected to ensure a safe delivery. A side effect of this well-thought-out and executed containerization process is that the inside of the crate is tidy and logical, which helps clear the shipment quickly through various countries’ im- portation review.

If you’re a Cessna Flyer regular, you may recall that my wife and I are relatively new Cessna owners. (Mike wrote about his purchase experience in “Buying My First Cessna,” featured in the October 2020 issue. —Ed.) During the purchase negotiations, the seller mentioned to my wife that one of his favorite trips was to fly to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and then cruise up and down the Banks at low level doing the “lighthouse tour.”

AIRFORMS EXPANDS AXLE REPLACEMENT OFFERINGS

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Oct. 9, 2020—Airforms has expanded its offerings for axle replacement parts to include previously hard-to-find products. Axles bend and break, and they seem to suffer the most on aircraft flown into backcountry locations and landed at off-airport sites. In the past, OEM axles have been difficult to locate. Consequently, Airforms Airforms of has found an expanding customer base for its PMA axles. Anchorage, Alaska, Airforms stocks axles for the Cessna 170, 172, 175, 180, 182, has PMAs to 185, 206, 208, and 305 (L-19). manufacture steel The company has PMAs for steel axles, which come and titanium axle anodized and provide greater strength than aluminum axles, replacements for especially in ski plane and tundra operations. most Cessna single Airforms also produces titanium axles, which are nearly a engine aircraft. pound lighter and predictably, more expensive. December 2020 / Cessna Flyer • 53 GARMIN UPDATES GI 275 ELECTRONIC FLIGHT INSTRUMENT, ADDS GFC 500 AUTOPILOT COMPATIBILITY AND MORE OLATHE, Kan., Oct. 6, 2020— Garmin International Inc. recently announced that an update for the GI 275 electronic flight instrument has been granted STC approval by the FAA and is available immediately through select authorized Garmin dealers. The GI 275 can now be used with the GFC 500 autopilot to deliver superior in-flight performance and added redundancy when multiple GI 275 units are installed in an aircraft. In addition to GFC 500 compatibility, the GI 275 can serve as a replacement and/or HSI to legacy Century II/III . Additional features of the latest GI 275 upgrade include the display of outside air temperature, groundspeed, true airspeed, and wind on the attitude indi- cator, as well as data field enhancements on the MFD page.

GFC 500 autopilot compatibility with the GI 275 A single GI 2751 electronic flight instrument can now be used as the atti- tude source to drive the GFC 500 auto- pilot, while also displaying mode annun- ciations and flight director indications. Its bright, high-resolution touchscreen display and wide viewing angle offer superior readability in the cockpit. For added redundancy in aircraft equipped with dual GI 275s, the secondary GI 2751 is capable of coupling to the GFC 500 autopilot, as well. In the unlikely event of a primary GI 275 failure, the autopilot remains fully functional when paired

54 • Cessna Flyer / December 2020 with the secondary GI 275. Additional redundancy is extended to include the G500 TXi and G600 TXi flight displays, which also allow the GI 275 to couple to the GFC 500 autopilot if needed when serving as a secondary instrument. Unique to the GI 275 and TXi, pilots will receive a miscompare notification if the AHRS sources between the two do not align.

Century II/III autopilot compatibility The GI 275’s autopilot interface compatibility continues to grow with the addition of the Century II/III auto- pilots, which can now be paired with the GI 2752 to replace the antiquated attitude indicator3. When replacing the old attitude indicator, pilots receive a reliable electronic flight instrument with additional capabilities beyond the tra- ditional display of attitude information. Furthermore, unlike legacy attitude indicators paired with the Century II/ III autopilots, the GI 275 is capable of disconnecting the autopilot in the un- likely event of an attitude upset or in the event of a miscompare of attitude data between two GI 275s.

Additional GI 275 display enhance- ments The GI 275 electronic flight instru- ment can display OAT and TAS when using a temperature probe. OAT and TAS are displayed along the bottom of the display, while wind speed and direction are displayed above the head- ing and autopilot annunciations on the attitude indicator. Additionally, MFD data field enhancements allow pilots to easily edit and change data fields on the MFD page. Pricing for various configu- rations of the GI 275 can be found on the Garmin website.

For more information about Garmin’s full line of avionics, go to garmin.com/aviation.
