Gilboy University of Hull 201108684 Abstract (Thesis Summary) The objective of this thesis is to establish meme theory as an analytical paradigm within the fields of screen and fan studies. Meme theory is an emerging framework founded upon the broad concept of a “meme”, a unit of culture that, if successful, proliferates among a given group of people. Created as a cultural analogue to genetics, memetics has developed into a cultural theory and, as the concept of memes is increasingly applied to online behaviours and activities, its relevance to the area of media studies materialises. The landscapes of media production and spectatorship are in constant fluctuation in response to rapid technological progress. The internet provides global citizens with unprecedented access to media texts (and their producers), information, and other individuals and collectives who share similar knowledge and interests. The unprecedented speed with (and extent to) which information and media content spread among individuals and communities warrants the consideration of a modern analytical paradigm that can accommodate and keep up with developments. Meme theory fills this gap as it is compatible with existing frameworks and offers researchers a new perspective on the factors driving the popularity and spread (or lack of popular engagement with) a given media text and its audience. -

These lyrics present an interesting paradox – a man who longed for his music to be accepted by the American public, yet remained indifferent to the social mores of the time. Porter offered trenchant social commentary aimed at a society restricted by social taboos and cultural conventions. The argument develops systematically through a chronological and contextual study of the influences of people and events on a man and his music. The prosodic intonation and imagistic texture of the lyrics demonstrate an intimate correlation between personality and composition which, in turn, is supported by the biographical content. LA VIE EN ROSE LIVIN’ and LOVIN’ with LOUIS ARMSTRONG Words are completely inadequate when attempting to convey the spirit of Louis Armstrong to anyone unfamiliar with his genius. It is far better to learn about Armstrong, also known as Satchmo, Pops, Papa Dip, through his music. And yet, to define his accomplishment solely through music is to overlook the totality of his unique contributions to the world. There is much to discover when we widen our focus. Through his story, we can examine how technology can be used to document change through the lens of a single person’s life. His long career spans the timeline of developing media: print media, photography, sound recordings, radio and television broadcasting, and film. Even today his legacy is spread through developing new media. With Internet access, any student can get their daily dose of Satchmo through iTunes, YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter. Satchmo used every means possible to create and communicate, and he was truly a pioneer exploring new technologies. Armstrong was constantly recording his story, first with pen and paper, next using with his trusty typewriter to write memoirs, essays and letters. He took to lugging around a reel‐to‐reel tape recorder on tour. He tucked scissors and scotch tape in his pockets to make collages whenever he had a spare moment. He amassed a personal collection of 1,600 recordings, 650 home recorded tapes in hand‐decorated boxes, 5,000 photographs, and 86 scrapbooks. He was often the first African American performer to break through racial barriers — in radio programs, animated shorts, early soundies, television shows, commercial advertisements, and in full‐length feature films — in a time when people of color could not walk through the front door of many public establishments, sit in the front of the bus, or go to an integrated school. -

IL PREMIO INTERNAZIONALE TITO SCHIPA 2018 (VIII Edizione) AL TENORE MARCELLO GIORDANI Ostuni, 8 agosto 2018 – Comunicato Stampa La sera di lunedì 13 agosto, nel Chiostro San Francesco di Ostuni, il Premio Internazionale Tito Schipa verrà consegnato a Marcello Guagliardo, in arte Marcello Giordani(1), uno dei più grandi tenori contemporanei, gloria dell’Italia nel mondo(2). Questo cantante ammirevole, con la voce illuminata (come Giuseppe Di Stefano) dai raggi del sole di Sicilia, è l’esempio d’un tenore lirico puro, saggiamente educato alla scuola antica(3), che nel corso della carriera amplia il proprio repertorio dai ruoli di grazia sino a quelli di lirico spinto e persino drammatico, partendo da una 1 salda base di belcanto ottocentesco e mai dimenticandola. Respirazione diaframmatico- costale, gola libera, nessuna forzatura, emissione dolce e insieme virile, suono tondo, immascherato e proiettato verso il cielo, acuti (e sovracuti) naturali e sfavillanti... Il numero sette, che i Greci chiamavano venerabile, per i Maestri classici simboleggiava la compiutezza e la perfezione, congiungendo in sé il ternario divino e il quaternario terrestre e rappresentando la totalità degli astri erranti visibili all'occhio umano. Superata questa soglia si entrava, con l'otto, considerato difensore dell'equilibrio cosmico, nell’infinito, nella trascendenza, nella trasfigurazione. Ci sembra un bellissimo auspicio per l’ottava edizione del Premio Internazionale Tito Schipa. Con la voce di Marcello Giordani, degno successore del sommo artista leccese, il Premio che onora il nome di quest'ultimo va oltre. Prima della premiazione di Marcello Giordani canteranno due giovani promesse: il soprano Giulia Palma (già esibitasi l’anno scorso) e il baritono Giuseppe Tafuro. -
