Putnam's Sons, Carole Baron, commented that "It isn't everyday you are offered the opportunity to publish someone as unbelievably talented as Alicia Keys. Her story is as inspiring as it is astonishing, and we are excited to be publishing her story, in her own words". Keys explained that "[the book] won't be exactly autobiography, but I love to read so much that I want to make sure the story is really powerful, like Catcher in the Rye or one of the books I love". And when I read that, it resonated in me because I said, 'Wow, I realized at that moment that all of the songs I write, all of the poetry that I write, every way that I express myself comes from some form of my tears, my pain, my happiness, my joy, my frustration, my confusion. Tears for Water - Wikipedia At this point, my obsession is no longer objective. Just listen to her sing the poem and hear her express her raw emotions. Lilly So soft and beautiful So pure yet painted By the evils of the world. It makes Tears for Water: Songbook of Poems and Lyrics soldier of a coward Makes the bravest man cry It makes death feel like heaven And makes you scared to die. My favorite part of this poem is how Keys uses a repetitive form to show the positive and negative sides of love. Within the span of the twenty-seven poems of Tears for WaterAlicia Keys rarely uses analogies or Tears for Water: Songbook of Poems and Lyrics imagery. Instead, she sticks to a straight forward spoken word format. The topics Keys discusses vary, giving this compilation no particular theme besides being birthed from tears. Her transparent writing style often implies that her early career as a singer and performer inspires most of her later poetry. Her work only scratches the surface level of her complex emotions.
