Lilly So soft and beautiful So pure yet painted By the evils of the world. My favorite part of this poem is how Keys uses a repetitive form to show the positive and negative sides of love. Within the span of the twenty-seven poems of Tears for WaterAlicia Keys rarely uses analogies or Tears for Water: Songbook of Poems and Lyrics imagery. Instead, she sticks to a straight forward spoken word format. The topics Keys discusses vary, giving this compilation no particular theme besides being birthed from tears. Her transparent writing style often implies that her early career as a singer and performer inspires most of her later poetry. Her work only scratches the surface level of her complex emotions.
