  • A Later Version of This Essay Appeared As 'Chris Blackwell and 'My Boy
(A later version of this essay appeared as ‘Chris Blackwell and ‘My Boy Lollipop’: Ska, Race and British Popular Music’ in Journal of Popular Music Studies, vol 22, no 4, 2010, pp. 436-465.) Chris Blackwell and “My Boy Lollipop”: Ska, Race and British Popular Music Ska evolved in Jamaica around 1960. I shall talk a little more about its development later. In 1964 there were three hits in the British top ten that utilized a ska beat. On March 14 Millie reached number 2 with “My Boy Lollipop.” A week later, the Migil 5’s ska version of “Mockin’ Bird Hill” reached number 10, its highest position. In December, Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames got to number 1 with the jazz track, “Yeh Yeh,” to which they gave a soft ska influence. Discussions of ska, and reggae, have tended to focus on the music’s Jamaican origins and have emphasized its qualities as black music. In this article my interest is in the relationship between ska and British popular music of the early 1960s. How did ska enter white Britons’ musical consciousness such that, by the late 1960s there were numerous ska hits and, by the late 1970s, there was a ska revival with groups such as Madness and the Two Tone groups including the Specials and Selector having chart hits? To this end I shall concentrate on the most popular of the three 1964 ska hits, Millie’s “My Boy Lollipop.” This song was first recorded as a rhythm and blues song in New York by Barbie Gaye about whom little is known other than that she was not black.

  • Jamaican Migrant and Canadian Host in Toronto's Transnational Re
King Alpha’s Song in a Strange Land: Jamaican Migrant and Canadian Host in Toronto’s Transnational Reggae Music Scene, 1973-1990 by John Jason Collins Wilson A dissertation Presented to The University of Guelph In partial fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Guelph, Ontario, Canada © John Jason Collins Wilson, May 2013 ABSTRACT King Alpha’s Song in a Strange Land: Jamaican Migrant and Canadian Host in Toronto’s Transnational Reggae Music Scene, 1973-1990 John Jason Collins Wilson Advisor: University of Guelph, 2013 Doctor Catharine Wilson Reggae music facilitated a cultural dialogue between Jamaican migrant and Canadian host in Toronto during the 1970s and 1980s. Exchanges flowed across the city’s ethnic frontier, bridging black and white youth together in an ‘oppositional’ and musical movement. While migrants enacted their Jamaican ethnicity in places where reggae was played, many non-Jamaicans satisfied a curiosity in the music of their migrant friends. This study examines the process of migration of people and music as seen from both the migrant and the host’s perspective. It is as much about black Jamaicans as it is about white Torontonians. Twenty Jamaicans and twenty non-Jamaicans were interviewed for this project. Though reggae became an expected part of Toronto’s musical vernacular, the Canadian version meant different things to different people. Indeed, sometimes the only thread that tied the varied experiences together was that Toronto was the place where reggae happened. Still, as a hybrid, reggae had rather evolved outside of place. It was a transnational musical form, constantly updated by influences traversing the ‘Black Atlantic’ in an on-going and triangular musical conversation.

  • Randy's 50Th Anniversary Disc 1
Randy’s 50th Anniversary (Disc 1) It’s common knowledge that the early sound systems - Tom The Great Sebastian, Sir Coxsone Down Beat, Duke Reid The Trojan, V-Rocket, Prince Buster’s Voice Of The People and King Edwards the Giant - were the motive power behind the development of Jamaican popular music in the 1950s. They played mostly US R&B and when the source of records began to dry up in the USA, many of the soundmen began to record local talent. But if sound systems were the engine in this vehicle of expression, then it was the local community of middle-class entrepreneurs - many among them of Chinese or Middle Eastern origin - who put themselves in the drivers seat. Men like the late Ken Khouri, owner of the first big record factory on the island and one of the first to record local music, the bandleader and businessman Byron Lee, the accountant Leslie Kong, the ice-cream parlour owner Charlie Moo, or Justin Yap, whose family owned stores. Equally prominent among this group was Vincent ‘Randy’ Chin. Together this group provided a commercial platform from which the music could make the transition from local style to international taste. Vincent Chin was born 3rd October 1937 in Kingston, the son of a carpenter who had arrived from China in the 1920s. He got the nickname ‘Randy’ because he was a fan of a US radio show broadcasting rhythm and blues and sponsored by Randy’s Record Shop of Gallatin, Tennessee, on station WLAC from Nashville. After finishing his schooling in the mid-1950s, he worked for Mr.

Editorial Dub Dear Reader Good to see the return of Asher Messenjah, to The Dub, as it was good to have his input at the Elder Stubbs Festival last month: his bubbling vibe and sweet selection. Yes Asher, step in when you can! We all got a full portion of blessings that day at the festival, the annual fund and awareness-raising event, for the mental health project RESTORE. Give thanks to Garvin Dan and Dan-I for the selection; to Sista Ali for saxophone; to Raw Sound, for their MC blessings; and to Ali Zion and Ras, for the assortment of cakes. It's good to have at least three annual events each year: The Bob Marley and Mikey Dread Festivals, as well as Elder Stubbs. As always, I give thanks for the continued support of Marco Fregnan of Reggaaediscography and Sista Mariana of Rastaites.

  • Jackie Mittoo at Home and Abroad: the Cultural and Musical Negotiations of a Jamaican Canadian
JACKIE MITTOO AT HOME AND ABROAD: THE CULTURAL AND MUSICAL NEGOTIATIONS OF A JAMAICAN CANADIAN KAREN ANITA ELOISE CYRUS A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO June 2015 © Karen A. E. Cyrus, 2015 ABSTRACT Donat Roy ‘Jackie’ Mittoo (1948-1990) made significant contributions to the genres of rock steady and reggae as a musician, producer and musical director of Studio One in Jamaica. He is renowned for the number of recordings that he arranged at Studio One, as well as his own instrumental recordings that featured the organ. He was also among a number of Jamaican musicians who migrated to Canada at the end of the 1960s and was active on the music scene in Toronto, as well as in the UK and the USA. Although Mittoo’s significance to the emergence and dissemination of Jamaican popular music (JPM) is acknowledged by music industry personnel, most studies focus on the big names of reggae and the theme of social protest in their music. Little attention is given to the role of session musicians such as Mittoo and the instrumental recordings that they created. This study attempts to redress this oversight; it will offer the first in-depth account of the career and instrumental recordings of Jackie Mittoo. This dissertation is in two parts. The first section presents a career biography which situates Mittoo’s role within the collective experience of Jamaican session musicians at home in Jamaica, and abroad in the centers of JPM production in Canada, the UK, and the USA.
