UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA ABSTRACT This paper is entitled: The Description of Travis Love Which Leading to Marriage. There are two characters in the novel, namely: Travis Parker and Gabby Holland. Each character has different characters and roles. In writing this paper the writer use include a supporting character, but this paper is still interesting to read because it implies the meaning of true love in the novel. Travis is a vet in a small town Beaufort who loves a woman named Gabby. The beginning of their introduction did not run smoothly. Travis spending time with Gabby. Travis trying to approach Gabby but effort Travis always didn’t work. Finally, Travis said love to her and she accept his love. Then they married and have 2 children. He sacrificed and give a concern for the sake of her. In writing this paper, the writer used the method of library and intrinsic approach. All data had collected by the writer, classified, and finally concluded. Hopefully, by this paper the readers can understand the elements of novel especially the main characters and the struggle of love which is described by the main characters. The pessimistic opinion would have looked at it as imaginative realm that cannot be studied at all. Literature can only be enjoyed for it tends to offer subjective element rather than objective one. Yet, the rest are more optimistic tovalue literature as a kind of knowledge then can be studied objectively. Ithas its medium language which is materially systematic. Therefore,literature is broadly applicable knowledge which is both subjective andrealistic. Literature consists of three genres, namely poetry, drama, and prose. Poetry is meaningful arrangement of words. Drama is a story which isintended to be performed on the stage. Prose is fictitious narrative kindof writing. They have much in common but different in expressing idea,style and others. Henry (1995:2) classify prose into two,fiction and non-fiction prose.

    1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study People have three basic needs in their live, such as cloth, food, and house. But it will more complete if there is love every day. Without love, people cannot live better, because they cannot share their feeling to the others. Love makes people happy, sad, angry, laugh, and even it can make people cry. In Islam, love has comprehensive view, that is love of Allah, love of Prophet Muhammad, and the last is human love. Musbikin (2002: 30) says that love is sacred. It is given by Allah and priceless. Every person deserves to get love even though he or she has to fight for it. The literature and psychology have close relationship. The psychology discovers the human’s behavior that is influenced by their experience. From the experience of human’s life, it can give inspiration for author to produce a literary work. The novel as part literary work replicates some realities that happen in the human’s life. It is induce the behavior of the character in the novel. The knowledge of the psychology helps the author to create characters in plays and novels more real as well as situation and plot (Wellek and Warren, 1956: 88-91). The Notebook is a romantic novel which is made in 1996 by Nicholas Sparks. It is based on true story and it was Nicholas Sparks’ 1 2 first published. The novel consists of 8 chapters inside it. This novel told on two levels, the first is the story a man, Noah reads from the notebook to a woman, Allie.

It’s sometimes hard for me to write acknowledgments for the simple reason that my life as an author has been blessed with a kind of professional stability that strikes me as somewhat rare in this day and age. When I think back to my earlier novels and reread the acknowledgments in, say, Message in a Bottle or The Rescue, I see names of people with whom I still work today. Not only have I had the same literary agent and editor since I began writing, but I’ve worked with the same publicists, film agent, entertainment attorney, cover designer, and salespeople, and one producer has been responsible for three of the four film adaptations. While it’s wonderful, it also makes me feel like something of a broken record when it comes to thanking these people. Nonetheless, each and every one of them deserves my gratitude. Of course, I have to begin-as always-with thanking Cat, my wife. We’ve been married eighteen years and have shared quite a life together: five children, eight dogs (at various times), six different residences in three different states, three very sad funerals of various members of my family, twelve novels and another nonfiction work. It’s been a whirlwind since the beginning, and I can’t imagine experiencing any of it with anyone else. My children-Miles, Ryan, Landon, Lexie, and Savannah-are growing up, slowly but surely, and while I love them dearly, I’m proud of each and every one of them.

His father, Patrick Michael (Mike), was a graduate student for much of Nicholas’ early life, so the family lived in a num- ber of college towns before settling in Fair Oaks, California, when Nicholas was eight. Nicholas’ mother, Jill EmmaMarie (Jill), worked as both a homemaker and optometrist’s assistant. All three Sparks chil- dren, including Nicholas’ older brother, Micah, and younger sister, Danielle, were born within a three-year period, and the closeness in age created a strong bond between them. The sun has come up and I am sitting by a window that is foggy with the breath of a life gone by. I’m a sight this morning: two shirts, heavy pants, a scarf wrapped twice around my neck and tucked into a thick sweater knitted by my daughter thirty birthdays ago. The thermostat in my room is set as high as it will go, and a smaller space heater sits directly behind me. II clicks and groans and spews hot air like a fairy-tale dragon, and still my body shivers with a cold that will never go away, a cold that has been eighty years in the making. Eighty years. I wonder if this is how it is for everyone my age. My life? It isn’t easy to explain. It has not been the rip-roaring spectacular I fancied it would be, but neither have I burrowed around with the gophers. I suppose it has most resembled a blue-chip stock: fairly stable, more ups than downs, and gradually trending upwards over time. I’ve learned that not everyone can say this about his life. But do not be misled. I am nothing special, of this I am sure. I am a common man with common thoughts, and I’ve led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten, but I’ve loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me this has always been enough.

Ceritanya yang sangat menyentuh sekali dengan bernuansa percintaan, namun tetap menghadirkan sebuah pesan moral dan perjuangan yang harus dicapai. Novel isa work of fiction, it is a story drawn out of the writer's imagination. Message in a bottle is a famous novel that has one of the international best-selling based on famous author, Nicholas Sparks. The writer believes that this is a great novel to be read. This novel is very interesting to read for young people, because the storyline is good and very touching. Indeed, the story in the Message in a Bottle mostly about sad romance, but behind the story implied some motivation for people to stay strong and continue living no matter how hard life is.
