Townlands in Parish Council Area 2 ANNAGHDOWN PARISH COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT 2014 ORGANISATIONAL PROFILE ANNAGHDOWN PARISH COUNCIL Annaghdown Parish Council was established in May 2006, following public consultations which were organised both individually and jointly by the existing Annaghdown and Corrandulla Community Councils. After some discussion it was agreed that the Community Councils would be disbanded and a new Parish Council would be founded in their stead and that all existing funds belonging to both bodies would be transferred to the new Council. VISION Annaghdown Parish Council seeks to develop within its local area, an inclusive and caring community where all members feel valued, respected, and safe in their homes, and are able to access the supports they require to live a fulfilling and satisfying life.

    THE LIST of CHURCH OF IRELAND PARISH REGISTERS A Colour-coded Resource Accounting For What Survives; Where It Is; & With Additional Information of Copies, Transcripts and Online Indexes SEPTEMBER 2021 The List of Parish Registers The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers was originally compiled in-house for the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI), now the National Archives of Ireland (NAI), by Miss Margaret Griffith (1911-2001) Deputy Keeper of the PROI during the 1950s. Griffith’s original list (which was titled the Table of Parochial Records and Copies) was based on inventories returned by the parochial officers about the year 1875/6, and thereafter corrected in the light of subsequent events - most particularly the tragic destruction of the PROI in 1922 when over 500 collections were destroyed. A table showing the position before 1922 had been published in July 1891 as an appendix to the 23rd Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. In the light of the 1922 fire, the list changed dramatically – the large numbers of collections underlined indicated that they had been destroyed by fire in 1922. The List has been updated regularly since 1984, when PROI agreed that the RCB Library should be the place of deposit for Church of Ireland registers. Under the tenure of Dr Raymond Refaussé, the Church’s first professional archivist, the work of gathering in registers and other local records from local custody was carried out in earnest and today the RCB Library’s parish collections number 1,114. The Library is also responsible for the care of registers that remain in local custody, although until they are transferred it is difficult to ascertain exactly what dates are covered.

    Elise Alonzi & Tommy Burke From monastic sanctuary to lay cemetery: investigations at St Colman’s Abbey, Inishbofin, 28th ICM Co. Galway The Cultural Landscapes of the Irish Coast (CLIC) project is a multi- disciplinary research project that unites American and Irish scholars and local UCD July 1st - July 3rd 2014 experts to examine cultural change in coastal Connemara from prehistory to the twentieth century. This session presents preliminary results of CLIC’s ! investigation of the origins, development and after-life of several island Abstracts ecclesiastical settlements in the early medieval period. This paper focuses on ! St Colman’s Abbey on Inishbofin, Co. Galway. The site currently consists of a ruinous fourteenth-century church and a graveyard that is still in use. The ! abbey’s founding in the late seventh century was famously documented by ! Bede. Recent survey has revealed a number of early medieval remains on site: ! an enclosure wall, carved cross-slabs, and a possible leacht/penitential station. Viewing these remains alongside a sparse documentary record suggests how ! the remains of early medieval monasticism provided a framework for local ! !pastoral worship in subsequent centuries. ! An examination of the word ! adaltrach Adaltrach is a term which is often used in the law texts discussing the ! entitlements and restrictions of the different types of wives. There have been ! many interpretations of this term, ranging from the most derogatory translation of ‘adulteress’ in Ancient Laws of Ireland to the scholars who leave ! the word untranslated. Did this word have a uniform meaning? And if so, is it ! possible to understand whether this was always used as a derogatory term? ! The Civil War in Galway came to an end because there was little appetite for further bloodshed in the face of ruthless determination by the Free State, or the pro-treatyites, to stamp out the anti-treaty forces. The Free State government warned that anyone carrying weapons other than the National Army, would be shot. Eleven Galway anti-treatyites were shot by firing squad. On January 20 1923 Martin Bourke, Stephen Joyce, Herbert Collins, Michael Walsh, and Thomas Hughes, all attached to the North Galway IRA Brigade, were arrested and executed in Athlone. On February 19 eighteen volunteers were arrested in Annaghdown, and brought to Galway gaol. It was given out that all were ‘well armed’. Even though it was expected that all, or a number of them, would be shot, nothing happened. In March a meeting of the commanding officers of the local anti-Treaty Forces was held in Roscommon. They were told to each select one target for attack. There wasn’t much enthusiasm to prolong the war. The leader of the 2nd Western Brigade of the IRA, Comdt Thomas Maguire, commented that that during the War of Independence “The British were the enemy, the old enemy; there was a certain pride in having the ability to attack them.
