La tecnología determina, en gran medida, la forma de los conflictos armados e influye en la capacidad que tienen unas fuerzas armadas para realizar con éxito sus operaciones. Su papel ha sido preponderante, como se ha podido ver durante la guerra del Golfo Pérsico de 1991, el conflicto de Kosovo, o la reciente invasión de Irak –citando ejemplos bien conocidos–, contribuyendo, de forma signifi- cativa, a lograr una rápida finalización de la fase armada con un desgaste militar mínimo. El presente trabajo pretende investigar sobre esta cuestión, po- niendo de relieve la importante relación que existe entre la tecnología y la defensa, subrayando el papel que ejercen algunas tecnologías en la consecución de ciertas misiones, y analizando cómo su presencia multi- plica la capacidad y la eficacia de una fuerza militar. Este análisis se ha realizado siguiendo dos vías. La primera ha sido observar su evolución a lo largo de la Historia, y ver su impacto sobre la estrategia y la táctica, y cómo la necesidad de la defensa ha in- fluido en los desarrollos tecnológicos de la Humanidad. -

Nicklas © Smithsonian Institution, 2003 NASM Archives Desind Collection 1997-0014 Herbert Stephen Desind Collection 109 Cubic Feet, 305 Boxes Biographical Note Herbert Stephen Desind was a Washington, DC area native born on January 15, 1945, raised in Silver Spring, Maryland and educated at the University of Maryland. He obtained his BA degree in Communications at Maryland in 1967, and began working in the local public schools as a science teacher. At the time of his death, in October 1992, he was a high school teacher and a freelance writer/lecturer on spaceflight. Desind also was an avid model rocketeer, specializing in using the Estes Cineroc, a model rocket with an 8mm movie camera mounted in the nose. To many members of the National Association of Rocketry (NAR), he was known as “Mr. Cineroc.” His extensive requests worldwide for information and photographs of rocketry programs even led to a visit from FBI agents who asked him about the nature of his activities. Mr. Desind used the collection to support his writings in NAR publications, and his building scale model rockets for NAR competitions. Desind also used the material in the classroom, and in promoting model rocket clubs to foster an interest in spaceflight among his students. Desind entered the NASA Teacher in Space program in 1985, but it is not clear how far along his submission rose in the selection process. He was not a semi-finalist, although he had a strong application. -

Chapter 1 Aircraft Designations and Popular Names Background on the Evolution of Aircraft Designations Aircraft model designation history is very complex. To fully understand the designations, it is important to know the factors that played a role in developing the different missions that aircraft have been called upon to perform. Technological changes affecting aircraft capabilities have resulted in corresponding changes in the operational capabilities and techniques employed by the aircraft. Prior to WWI, the Navy tried various schemes for designating aircraft. In the early period of naval aviation a system was developed to designate an aircraft’s mission. Different aircraft class designations evolved for the various types of missions performed by naval aircraft. This became known as the Aircraft Class Designation System. Numerous changes have been made to this system since the inception of naval aviation in 1911. While reading this section, various references will be made to the Aircraft Class Designation System, Designation of Aircraft, Model Designation of Naval Aircraft, Aircraft Designation System, and Model Designation of Military Aircraft. All of these references refer to the same system involved in designating aircraft classes. This system is then used to develop the specific designations assigned to each type of aircraft operated by the Navy. The F3F-4, TBF-1, AD-3, PBY-5A, A-4, A-6E, and F/A-18C are all examples of specific types of naval aircraft designations, which were developed from the Aircraft Class Designation System. It was a year of sharp recession, with attendant industrial disruption, unem ployment, materials shortages, insufficient investment capital, declining demand and myriad other difficulties. Most of all there was rampant inflation that snowballed into double-digit percentages. Beca use of this inflation, a word of qualification is in order with respect to the statistical detail of this edition of Aerospace Facts and Figures. -
