Mechanical Engineering, Universidade do Minho, Portugal Copyright © 2010 SAE International ABSTRACT Since the late 19th century until recently several electric vehicles have been designed, manufactured and used throughout the world. Some were just prototypes, others were concept cars, others were just special purpose vehicles and lately, a considerable number of general purpose cars has been produced and commercialized. Since the mid nineties the transportation sector emissions are being increasingly regulated and the dependency on oil and its price fluctuations originated an increasing interest on electric vehicles (EV). A wide research was made on existing electric/hybrid vehicle models. Some of these vehicles were just in the design phase, but most reached the prototype or full market production. They were divided into several types, such as NEVs, prototypes, concept cars, and full homologated production cars. For each type of vehicle model a technical historic analysis was made. Data related to the vehicle configuration as well as the embedded systems were collected and compared. Based on these data future prospect of evolution was subsequently made. The main focus was put on city vehicles and long range vehicles. For city vehicles the market approach normally consists in the use of full electric configuration while for the latter, the hybrid configuration is commonly used. -

The Renaultnissan Alliance to Showcase 100
PRESS RELEASE May 03, 2011 The RenaultNissan Alliance to showcase 100% electric vehicles at Challenge Bibendum Renault Fluence Z.E. & Nissan LEAF available for test driving at Berlin event PARIS(May 03, 2011) – The comingofage of the electric vehicle will be celebrated by the RenaultNissan Alliance at the Challenge Bibendum in Berlin in May. For the first time since Renault and Nissan have participated in the annual event, the two companies will be showcasing electric vehicles at the fiveday event dedicated to a sustainable future for personal mobility. The Challenge Bibendum, which is created and sponsored by Michelin and now in its 11th year, brings together more than 5,000 people from the worlds of politics, business, industry, science, society and the media to discuss the challenges facing future mobility. As well as forums, debates and technological exhibitions, Challenge Bibendum, which starts May 18 this year, stages ‘real world’ driving tests and rallies. One highlight of the event is a 300km rally for up to 100 intercity vehicles to evaluate performance, safety, fuel savings and, vitally, CO2 emissions. The Renault Fluence Z.E. (zero emission) family saloon will represent the Alliance in this rally. Although the total distance to be covered is greater than the EV’s maximum range, the driving team will swap batteries at half distance to demonstrate that electric vehicles need not be restricted to a life within the city walls. The awardwinning, fiveseater Nissan LEAF – already on sale in Japan, North America and select markets in Europe – will take part in other events, including a tough 30km circuit simulating typical urban conditions. -

Development of Airbag System for Kei Cars
Development of Airbag System for Kei Cars Shinya TAKAHASHI Akira SHIODE Shogo MIYAMOTO Shusaku KURODA Abstract Recently, kei cars have drawn attention in the car market in Japan due to economic efficiency. Thus, the safety technology against collisions and protection equipment for occupants in those cars are increasingly improved. FUJITSU TEN has developed and mass-produced airbag ECUs for ordinary-sized vehicles for more than 20 years. In order to meet the needs of a wider range of customers, this time, we developed a new platform for kei cars. When making proposals to new customers, we need to propose an airbag system for an entire car, instead of ECUs as its part. Therefore, we had to develop a comprehensive technology including an impact determination technology and satellite sensors for the entire car. This paper elaborates on some major points of our engineering development for kei cars. 34 Development of Airbag System for Kei Cars 1 Introduction1. Partly because of their effects, traffic accident fatalities have been decreasing since 1992 year after year, according to a survey by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (Fig.
