Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. ROBINSON IN A STAGE ADAPTATION OF 'THE GRADUATE' By Maureen Dezell, Globe Staff Truth be told, says Kathleen Turner, "I find men under 30 quite uninteresting. "I shouldn't make blanket generalizations, but I will," she adds with a throaty laugh that sounds as if it's soaked in smoke, honey, and single-malt scotch. "I can appreciate a nicely formed bod as much as anyone. But men, until about the age of 29, lack conversation." Turner puts aside her personal indifference to jejune members of the opposite sex to play Mrs. Robinson, a woman of a certain age and experience who seduces a callow Benjamin Braddock in the stage version of "The Graduate," which opens this week at the Colonial Theatre. The Broadway-bound production is based more on Charles Webb's novel "The Graduate" than Mike Nichols's 1967 film adaptation. But it was brought to the stage because of the resonance of the movie, a classic that singularly captured the calm of postwar American affluence and youthful anomie just before the social, political, and sexual storms of the 1960s. A treasure trove of popular culture milestones and memorable moments, "The Graduate" also launched Dustin Hoffman's movie career, turned Simon & Garfunkel into mainstream musical bards, made "plastics" a punch line, and introduced "Mrs. Robinson" to America's sexual lexicon. But this eagerly anticipated revival owes almost as much to Turner as it does to the film. A bawdy dame with a brain whom Time magazine once described as the "first authentically mysterious feminine presence since Garbo," she is an American pop icon in her own right. -

El gótico británico y el cine La novela gótica británica vivió su primer período de esplendor entre El castillo de Otranto de Horace Walpole (1765), primera muestra del género, y Melmoth, el errabundo del irlandés Charles Maturin (1820). Sus figuras principales fueron Anne Radcliffe, quien era tan popular entonces como lo es hoy Stephen King, y Matthew Lewis, joven autor de la irreverente El monje (1794). Frankenstein de Mary Shelley se publicó en 1818, dentro, pues, de este primer período, si bien la edición más conocida es la de 1831, en la que Mary transformó al Victor Frankenstein romántico y heroico de su primera versión en un pecador castigado por su intento de usurpar los poderes de Dios. Exceptuando a Frankenstein, las otras novelas góticas de esta primera época no han inspirado ninguna gran película, pese a lo cual hay que nombrarlas porque su papel en la historia de la ficción de terror es fundamental. El atributo más característico del género gótico es la capacidad de crear ambientes tétricos dominados por villanos terroríficos, ambientes que son el escenario ideal de tramas movidas por el suspense, un recurso narrativo típico de este tipo de ficción. La novela gótica toma la trama de la novela sentimental, en la que unos héroes virtuosos pero insulsos son asediados por desgracias diversas, y exagera el sado- masoquismo implícito en la actividad del lector, quien simpatiza con los héroes perseguidos sin dejar por ello de disfrutar con la lectura de sus penalidades. A partir del tema de la persecución por parte de un villano perverso y poderoso de la heroína inocente y desamparada, la novela gótica le ha legado al cine a través de sus numerosos descendientes literarios y teatrales el motivo del inocente injustamente perseguido, usado hoy en casi todos los géneros del cine de Hollywood. -

SHAKESPEARE ON FILM AND TELEVISION IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by Zoran Sinobad January 2012 Introduction This is an annotated guide to moving image materials related to the life and works of William Shakespeare in the collections of the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. While the guide encompasses a wide variety of items spanning the history of film, TV and video, it does not attempt to list every reference to Shakespeare or every quote from his plays and sonnets which have over the years appeared in hundreds (if not thousands) of motion pictures and TV shows. For titles with only a marginal connection to the Bard or one of his works, the decision what to include and what to leave out was often difficult, even when based on their inclusion or omission from other reference works on the subject (see below). For example, listing every film about ill-fated lovers separated by feuding families or other outside forces, a narrative which can arguably always be traced back to Romeo and Juliet, would be a massive undertaking on its own and as such is outside of the present guide's scope and purpose. Consequently, if looking for a cinematic spin-off, derivative, plot borrowing or a simple citation, and not finding it in the guide, users are advised to contact the Moving Image Reference staff for additional information.
