Abstract tensor systems and diagrammatic representations J¯anisLazovskis September 28, 2012 Abstract The diagrammatic tensor calculus used by Roger Penrose (most notably in [7]) is introduced without a solid mathematical grounding. We will attempt to derive the tools of such a system, but in a broader setting. We show that Penrose's work comes from the diagrammisation of the symmetric algebra. Classical Physics: Spacetime and Fields Nikodem Poplawski Department of Mathematics and Physics, University of New Haven, CT, USA Preface We present a self-contained introduction to the classical theory of spacetime and fields. This expo- sition is based on the most general principles: the principle of general covariance (relativity) and the principle of least action. The order of the exposition is: 1. Spacetime (principle of general covariance and tensors, affine connection, curvature, metric, tetrad and spin connection, Lorentz group, spinors); 2. Fields (principle of least action, action for gravitational field, matter, symmetries and conservation laws, gravitational field equations, spinor fields, electromagnetic field, action for particles). In this order, a particle is a special case of a field existing in spacetime, and classical mechanics can be derived from field theory. I dedicate this book to my Parents: Bo_zennaPop lawska and Janusz Pop lawski. I am also grateful to Chris Cox for inspiring this book. Appendix A: Matrices and Tensors A.1 Introduction and Rationale The purpose of this appendix is to present the notation and most of the mathematical techniques that will be used in the body of the text. The audience is assumed to have been through several years of college level mathematics that included the differential and integral calculus, differential equations, functions of several variables, partial derivatives, and an introduction to linear algebra. Matrices are reviewed briefly and determinants, vectors, and tensors of order two are described. The application of this linear algebra to material that appears in undergraduate engineering courses on mechanics is illustrated by discussions of concepts like the area and mass moments of inertia, Mohr’s circles and the vector cross and triple scalar products. The solutions to ordinary differential equations are reviewed in the last two sections. The notation, as far as possible, will be a matrix notation that is easily entered into existing symbolic computational programs like Maple, Mathematica, Matlab, and Mathcad etc. The desire to represent the components of three-dimensional fourth order tensors that appear in anisotropic elasticity as the components of six-dimensional second order tensors and thus represent these components in matrices of tensor components in six dimensions leads to the nontraditional part of this appendix. This is also one of the nontraditional aspects in the text of the book, but a minor one. This is described in Sect. A.11, along with the rationale for this approach. We describe all almost contact metric, almost hermitian and G2-structures admitting a connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion tensor, and prove that there exists at most one such connection. We investigate its torsion form, its Ricci tensor, the Dirac operator and the V- parallel spinors. In particular, we obtain partial solutions of the type // string equations in dimension n = 5, 6 and 7. 1. Introduction. Linear connections preserving a Riemannian metric with totally skew-symmetric torsion recently became a subject of interest in theoretical and mathematical physics. For example, the target space of supersymmetric sigma models with Wess-Zumino term carries a geometry of a metric connection with skew-symmetric torsion [23, 34, 35] (see also [42] and references therein). In supergravity theories, the geometry of the moduli space of a class of black holes is carried out by a metric connection with skew-symmetric torsion [27]. The geometry of NS-5 brane solutions of type II supergravity theories is generated by a metric connection with skew-symmetric torsion [44, 45, 43]. The existence of parallel spinors with respect to a metric connection with skew-symmetric torsion on a Riemannian spin manifold is of importance in string theory, since they are associated with some string solitons (BPS solitons) [43]. Supergravity solutions that preserve some of the supersymmetry of the underlying theory have found many applications in the exploration of perturbative and non-perturbative properties of string theory. -

Therefore the numerical treatment of such tensors requires a special representation technique which characterises the tensor by data of moderate size. These representations (or formats) should also support operations with tensors. Examples of operations are the addition, the scalar product, the componentwise product (Hadamard product), and the matrix-vector multiplication. In the latter case, the ‘matrix’belongs to the tensor space of Kronecker matrices, while the ‘vector’is a usual tensor. In certain applications the subspaces of symmetric or antisymmetric tensors are of interest. For instance, fermionic states in quantum chemistry require antisymmetry, whereas bosonic systems are described by symmetric tensors. The appropriate representation of (anti)symmetric tensors is seldom discussed in the literature. Of course, all formats are able to represent these tensors since they are particular examples of general tensors. However, the special (anti)symmetric format should exclusively produce (anti)symmetric tensors. -

Appendix A The Language of Differential Forms This appendix—with the only exception of Sect.A.4.2—does not contain any new physical notions with respect to the previous chapters, but has the purpose of deriving and rewriting some of the previous results using a different language: the language of the so-called differential (or exterior) forms. Thanks to this language we can rewrite all equations in a more compact form, where all tensor indices referred to the diffeomorphisms of the curved space–time are “hidden” inside the variables, with great formal simplifications and benefits (especially in the context of the variational computations). The matter of this appendix is not intended to provide a complete nor a rigorous introduction to this formalism: it should be regarded only as a first, intuitive and oper- ational approach to the calculus of differential forms (also called exterior calculus, or “Cartan calculus”). The main purpose is to quickly put the reader in the position of understanding, and also independently performing, various computations typical of a geometric model of gravity. The readers interested in a more rigorous discussion of differential forms are referred, for instance, to the book [22] of the bibliography. Let us finally notice that in this appendix we will follow the conventions introduced in Chap. 12, Sect. 12.1: latin letters a, b, c,...will denote Lorentz indices in the flat tangent space, Greek letters μ, ν, α,... tensor indices in the curved manifold.
