What About…the Book “Killing Jesus”? By Clark BlanChard Recently, Fox News anchor and syndicated newspaper columnist Bill O’Reilly and historian Martin Dugard added “Killing Jesus” to their very popular book series, “Killing Lincoln” and “Killing Kennedy.” So, from a biblical perspec- tive, what about this very popular book, “Killing Jesus”? “Killing Jesus” claims to be an historical record, not a theological book. Al- though both authors are Roman Catholic, neither claims to be theologians. They write, “We are historical investigators and are interested primarily in telling the truth about important people, not converting anyone to a spiritual cause…. To understand what Jesus accomplished and how he paid with his life, we have to understand what was happening around him. His was a time when Rome domi- nated the Western world and brooked no dissent. Human life was worth little. Life expectancy was less than forty years, and far less if you happened to anger the Roman powers that were” (pp. 2-3). Sunday, July 21, 2019 FBC Vidalia Dr. Ricky Cummings Evening Service Series: Christ the Logos – A Study of the Gospel of John Sermon: The Crucifixion and Burial of Jesus Christ John 19:17-42 Facts about the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ: Jesus was crucified between two criminals. John 19:17-18 (ESV) 17 and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. A sign was written above Jesus stating, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews”. John 19:19-22 (ESV) 19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.” The soldiers divide up Jesus’ clothes. John 19:23-24 (ESV) 23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. New Life: John 19 Pastor Carlos Sibley Sunday, April 14, 2019 Open your Bibles to John 19. We've worked our way over the course of several months now through this Gospel, beginning back in the fall in chapter 1. Now we come to John 19, and it is a heavy chapter. The prayer this week and the prayer this morning has been that each of us would somehow feel the weight and the worth of this chapter. It is what I would call the "what happened" chapter more than the "why it happened chapter." What happened in chapter 19 will be expounded on and applied and taught to us from Acts through the end of the New Testament. We have the account, we have the facts of what happened to Jesus Christ the day He died. This is the cross chapter. If you were looking for one chapter in God's word that would give you the most succinct, clear details of the arrest and trial and burial of Christ, it is John 19. It is a chapter that if you read it over and over and over again, it'll keep you close to the cross. Today, I want us to look together and see what happened in the life and death of Jesus. Let’s start in verse one: Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. -

Let us pray: Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart !be acceptable to you, O Lord, our rock and our redeemer. Amen. Perhaps you can explain the significance of the following scenario: I wrote today’s sermon on Thursday afternoon. I spent Friday trying to finish our Federal and State taxes. Maybe that’s why, as I was filling out the Federal 1040 and the North Carolina NC D-500 with TC, I kept hearing Jesus’ words in my head, “Give to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” (Mark 12:17) Somebody asked the other day, “When you picked out this sermon text, did you realize it would be right in the middle of tax season?” Well, not really! I thought to- day’s sermon would be about responsible citizenship and our involvement as Presbyte- rians in the world around us. Perhaps you could get those ideas from Jesus’ words to the Pharisees and the Herodians. However, this debate about whether or not it is law- ful to pay taxes to the emperor runs much deeper than whether or not we should file with the IRS by April 15. Some of you got an e-mail from me late Monday afternoon, asking if anybody had a copy of Bill O’Reilly’s book, Killing Jesus. -

SCENE #1: John 18:1-14 EVANGELIST: When Jesus had finished praying, he left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was an olive grove, and he and his disciples went into it. Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. So Judas came to the grove, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons. Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, JESUS: Who is it that you want? EVANGELIST [SOLDIERS]: “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. JESUS: I am he. EVANGELIST: And Judas the traitor was standing there with them. When Jesus said, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground. Again Jesus asked them, JESUS: I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go. EVANGELIST: This happened so that the words Jesus had spoken would be fulfilled: "I have not lost one of those you gave me." Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. But Jesus commanded Peter, JESUS: Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me? EVANGELIST: Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in- law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. -

There were three stages in both the Jewish “trial” and the Roman “trial.” After His arrest, Jesus was taken to the home of Annas and there interrogated informally (John 18:12–14, 19–23). Annas hoped to get information that would implicate Jesus as an enemy of the state. He wanted to prove that both His doctrine and His disciples were anti-Roman, for then He would be worthy of death. I mean everybody would agree that he was crucified, but we in the Christian Church have tended to speak of that as “dying for the sins of the world.” But the bottom line is, crucifixion is a form of execution. -

Gospel of Matthew Chapter 2 -- John Karmelich 1. One of the great questions people struggle with is, “Why does God allow so much evil to exist? a) History records one of the most evil people ever to exists in this chapter. b) This chapter that takes place during the one to two years of Jesus’ life. c) We read of King Herod killing every baby and child under the age of two in one specific town (Bethlehem) in order to kill the baby Jesus. i) A question to ponder is, “Why would God allow this to happen?” ii) Or even the question, “Why would the Roman soldiers obey such an order?” iii) For those of us who know this story, I want you to think about the story from the standpoint of good and evil, and why God allows evil to exist. a) That may be well and good for you and me, but what about from the parents of those who had their babies killed? b) How could God allow something like that? (1) In this chapter, God told Mary and Joseph to flee to Egypt to avoid this persecution. Why didn’t he tell all the parents to flee? Doesn’t God love everybody? Why would he be so cruel? d) Well I just dug myself into a deep theological hole, and now I have to climb out! J i) For starters, one has to have the eternal perspective. ii) I am positive, those children are in heaven. The bible teaches that all children who die innocently because of someone else’s sin get to go to heaven. -

TITLE: THE CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS SCRIPTURE: John 19:17-30 BIG IDEA: If any of us ever wants to fully understand the extent of God’s love for us, we need not look any further than the cross of Christ. In this passage we see the wounds of Jesus, and as believers we understand that these wounds are intended for us. We see His suffering and recognize that it is our sin being paid. The world may look at this picture of Jesus and see someone mocked, beaten, and defeated, yet in reality, this is the pinnacle of history. It’s the moment where sacrificial love is most clearly demonstrated and where the weight of Christ’s divine power is most firmly felt. 1. THE CRUCIFIXION – READ John 19:17-27 CONTEXT: This account of the crucifixion is the shortest of the four accounts, and the detail that John gives is unique to his Gospel alone. John records the crucifixion, so we might know that Jesus really did suffer, He really did die, and He really did rise again to be our King. John contrasts two groups of people who are observing the death of Christ; the soldiers and the women. On one hand, we see soldiers seeking the spoils of Jesus’ death, or in their mind, His only remaining value. On the other hand, we see a group that loves and cherishes Christ and sticks with Him even though the risk is great. A. Do you think it could ever be dangerous for us to become too familiar with the cross? How might you explain the need for the crucifixion to someone who has never heard the gospel? B.
